couldn't finish "Twilight" book..anyone else?

I got about halfway through the first book and just couldn't take any more. Edward has no redeeming qualities beyond his looks and Bella... ugh. The whole premise of Edward going to high school was stupid.

.... so here is 150 year old Edward who has presumably done it all, seen it all and says to himself, "I'm bored. You know what I need in my life? More algebra classes!". No.

Horrible writing and I have read some total trash.

Yes, the BBC vamps have fangs and of course the lead vamp is a hot guy. It is a show that is British so you have to keep that in mind.

Blade is a 70's Marvel Comic Hero and he is the definition of cool as a "hunter". My 2 favorite "hunters" are Sam and Dean of "Supernatural".

I will be honest, I have never seen so many supernatural shows in my life. I am enjoying every minute of it.

I know who Blade is My comic book geekery goes way back...but I agree about his "coolness". I'd put Buffy right up there too!

I watched Buffy however I did not watch Angel. Now that it rerun all the time I think I might start watching it. The kids were 8 and 2 so I wasn't watching to much TV then.

Since you are a comic geek, is there a graphic novel (to be PC) for Constantine?

Dunno..I don't do graphic novels. Just comic books. Though I DID read Watchmen. Wanted to see how faithful the film was going to be.

I found them to be enjoyable, light and easy to read. I think that the reason some don't "get" it is the fact that they were written for young teenagers, not us adults. This is the stuff that they can relate to...well hopefully not vampires, but the angst and akwardness that Bella feels is something many girls can relate to at that age.

There are a lot of wonderful, well written books for teens--just because books are written with teens in mind doesn't mean that the author needs to write down to them.

In fact, another vampire series that dd and I have enjoyed are the House of Night books. The first book is called Marked and the authors are P.C. Cast and Kristen Cast. They feature a strong teen female heroine and an interesting take on vampires. I enjoyed these much more than the Twilight books. It's too bad that they haven't gained as much popularity.

I didn't feel that the author wrote "down to them". It's just her writing style. I agree that its not the most riveting story out there, but it was fun to read.

My Twilight review:

When I first read this book, I was sick, on isolation, and cut off from human contact other than my mother and my doctor. Needless to say, I devoured it.

Then, once back in society, I reread it. And saw it for the horrible rubbish it truly is.

For starters, Bella is a whiner. She complains about her parents, the climate, her new town that she decided to live in, excetera. She is horribly rude to her father who took her in, even after he buys her a car. She gripes about her new house, the scenery, ad nauseum.

50 pages of this, and she arrives at school. Of course, this special snowflake doesn't associate herself with "common people"! She snubs any possibly new friends, instead focusing attention on the emo-acting supermodels in the corner. Thus implying that looks trump personality.

Skip the next 50 or so pages to see that the emo boy she watched is a "zomgvamp" named Edward who wants to suck her blood because she's just so tasty. New-age Romeo & Juliet without the lyrical prose, they fall in love with just 3 conversations. Add sparkling, baseball, and hunter-vampires, and you've got the book. Original? Possibly. Anti-feminist? Hell yes. Breaking every vampire rule in the book? Amen to that.

It's true too. I think I got as far as the part where she's in the parking lot after she thinks her new lab partner Edward hates her because he doesn't come to class or something.

I have read every freaking one of those books and hated every minute of it--often getting frustrated and throwing the book. Yes, I continued to subject myself to them because my teenage dd was reading them. She was 17 at the time and I hadn't monitored her reading for years but she gave me the first one and told me how much she liked it.

I continued reading them so I could point out that Bella was a cautionary tale on how NOT to behave. I was particularly upset with the second book--Bella is so depressed that she's engaging in behavior that could get herself killed all over a boy. Until...she meets another boy and then...yippee...life is worth living again. What the heck?

After I gave dd my viewpoint on the book, she admitted that she was pretty over Bella herself by book 2. I then gave her a copy of Pride & Prejudice and told her to pay special attention to Lizzie Bennett and look at the differences between her character and Bella and decide who she'd rather emulate.

Love P&P! I think Sense & Sensibility is another good one to show how you should & shouldn't act.

I keep hearing about the book and movie. I hear about it from people I admire, trust and respect. I *LOVE* to read...but I can't read "just anything." Anyway, I picked up Twilight (the book) and forced myself to read to page 129...and I have now decided to give up.

First of all...the whole vampire thing turns me off. I keep hearing how that is not the main focus, it is a love story, blah blah blah. But as I read the book and get into it...the vampire thing hangs over me and I cannot get past it, and I don't even think the writing is all that spectacular.

Anyway, I am not being a book snob...I have read some cr@p that I have loved...just wondering if there are any others out there that feel the same?

While I did end up finishing the whole book, I pretty much had to force myself to do it. No joke, I think it took me close to a month to finish. I finally decided to cave and give it a shot since everyone seems to love it but I just did not get it. Bella is super annoying. And my sister told me what happens to her in one of the later ones (I have no intention of ever reading another Twilight book)...

I was watching 2005 S&S with Emma Thompson, Kate Winslet & Hugh Grant yesterday. Funny you should say that.

I can agree that these series are liked by teen girls but then again, couldn't the author at least made Bella a teenager that wasn't dependent on Edward and pratically let him run her life. No teenage girl should go through that. If the book was written for teens, Meyer could of at least made Bella a person to look up to, not a girl whose value seemed to be wrapped into a guy.

I haven't read all responses here, but I agree that this book series is overrated - at least in my opinion. I read all four books and while there were some parts that drew me in there were many more where I didn't think I could go another page and I had to force myself to go on. That's just my opinion though. My DD and her friends all loved these books and I guess if you're 13 or 14 this is pretty hot stuff.

I have had no interest what so every in reading these books. I don't get it. But then again I don't 'get' the whole Harry Potter thing either.

DD15 thankfully had no interest in reading these books or even seeing the movie and she is a HUGE reader.

I had no interest in reading Twilight, I only did because my SIL was on my back. "Well didja read it yet?" "Didja read Twilight?!" "You gotta read it" lol.

Much to my surprise I LOVED Twilight. Became completely obsessed. But I had a hard time getting through the rest of the series, they are just not as good, IMO.
