Ok, so after searching through threads, I understand that as a member, internet is free at DVC resorts.
I also saw that you can bring a wireless router?

Can you tell me how this works? If I bring a laptop, what do I need to do to connect to the internet?
I have a modem at home, and am obviously not very tech-saavy, so not sure exactly what I would need to bring to connect at the resort? :confused3
Any help would be appreciated!

You only need wirless if you want it. You can connect your laptop with a wired connection the cord is usually in the closet.

Most if not all of the connections are in the bedroom area. The supplied cord is only 5 feet long. Your choices if you want to put your computer somewhere else is to bring a longer cord or a wireless router.

The only problem we encountered during the trip was that each day someone had to reactivate the DVC code. So if my DH or I were gone then our guests might get locked out of using the system. It was two teenagers using their I touches and a netbook that had problems. I think another adult could have figured out the login.

We set up a wireless network in our GV at OKW. It took about five minutes and was a breeze. I used a Netgear N300 and just put the disk into my laptop and let it run. I set up a password and gave that to all the guests so they could use it.

I often sat out on the porch using my laptop. Since they did the renovation at OKW, they moved the internet connection from the dining room table to the master bedroom end table. Which was a mistake in my book.

I was wondering this also. I can go out and buy a wireless router to bring, but I'm totally clueless about the "setting it up"part. Someone mentioned running a disc. Does a disc come with the router?

Recently, in our BCV 2-bedroom, the connection was in the living room next to the dining table. The ethernet cord (from the connection to your laptop) hung in the bedroom closet in a gray cloth bag. If all you want is to connect 1 laptop, this is all you need.

However, we found the process of making a connection to be flakey. After hooking up, our browser first showed a screen offering to charge us about $10/day, with a note that this would be free for DVC members. When we "accepted" the terms we got an error message with a phone number for technical support. Tech support answered right away (at 10:00 at night), gave us a secret code, and showed us how to log in a second time. But we had to renew this deal (including the error message followed by the secret code) every 24 hours.

Thanks for all of the responses so far. If I bring a wireless router THIS (above) is my question as well. :thumbsup2

Many people have said they were able to take their router (sometimes its the old router) from home (that was plugged into their cable or DSL modem), plug it into the WDW internet port and run with no additional configuration/issues. Usually if it works at home, it will work @ WDW.

Sometimes that may not be enough and additional configuration is needed.

What i was going to say. Most use an vacation only router and need it to be configured but in your case just take the one you are using at home, including all cables. The cable that goes to your DSL modem/cable modem plug that cable into the wall at Disney. Now...if you plug your router into the telephone plug in your wall then you have a router/modem combination unit and this will not work at Disney. But if you have a modem plugged into the phone jack in the wall and then a second box plugged into the modem with a bigger rectangular plug then the second box is your router. Take that to Disney World and it will work just fine as it is.

The disc came with the router.

Any needed set up info should be available online. So if you end up with a router but not the documentation, it should not be a big deal.

You really don't need to know much. Netgear (my preferred choice) comes with a set-up program and all of the default settings work just fine at Disney. The only thing that could even be remotely confusing is that the cord in the room goes into the WAN port while the instructions will tell you it is (and it normally is) the cord coming from the modem.

I would save money and get an older b/g model.

Ours was at the living room end table - I wonder if there is an ethernet connection both places? :confused3

I just bought a used N travel router for $28 including shipping but I agree that price is likely the most important factor for a travel router. I personally would not try to use a home router unless I were either driving or used an owners locker or similar service.
