Waited 30 minutes at Gibson Girl and asked about the Peppermint Ice Cream that had been mentioned awhile back and they looked at me like I was nuts and had no clue. Did I misunderstand where this was??

I am the one who mentioned it. It's only available during the holiday season - not for Halloween season. Starting 11/14, we should start to see it at Gibson Girl, or right around that time. Peppermint is more associated with Christmas because of candy canes, etc. In fact, last week our weekly Monday theme in the Christmas Superthread was "Treats and Treasures," and I posted a photo of my peppermint ice cream cone from last year, encrusted with peppermint chunks.

shooooootttt. I did think it was kinda early for peppermint, but thought maybe they started it in October. OK...that makes sense and maybe they'll still have it in January when I go..:) thanks

I have to admit to becoming very giddy whenever I see the bright pink Dreyer's carton pop up in the frozen foods aisle of Ralphs each year!:rotfl2:

My local Ralphs already has the peppermint ice cream in stock (and Dreyer's is the ice cream that is used at Gibson Girl), and I saw it last weekend and let out a shriek.

Interestingly, the peppermint ice cream was blocking the Dreyer's pumpkin pie (or whatever it's called) ice cream on the shelf. The pumpkin stuff was all the way in the back and could not be seen unless you took the Dreyer's off the shelf or moved it out of the way. That pumpkin ice cream must not be a big seller.

There are 2 varieties of Dreyer's peppermint ice cream that I have seen in the stores. There is the regular, full fat kind in the bright pink carton. That ice cream has more of a pink tone to it and the flavor is a bit more rich (though not too much so).

Then there is the "Slow Churned" Peppermint ice cream, and I have seen that in both green cartons and pink cartons in different years (:confused3). This year the Slow Churned carton in my store looked very similar to the regular kind and it would have been easy to grab the wrong one. The Slow Churned Peppermint ice cream is a bit lighter in color - not quite as pink; it's very pale, but still has candy cane chunks in it like the full fat kind does.

There used to be a 'light' version at my store as well, but I think it was replaced by the Slow Churned kind.

I'm pretty sure Gibson Girl serves the full fat variety, from what I recall. But I guess they don't serve the Dreyer's pumpkin ice cream. (It must not be very good.:confused3)

As you can see, I am a peppermint ice cream connoisseur!:rotfl2::rotfl2: (A friend and I used to love, love, love these peppermint malts and milkshakes that were served at a local restaurant around the holidays, so I think some of my attachment to it is sentimental because it brings me back to that time.)

But peppermint ice cream never tastes as good from a carton as it tastes in a cone at Disneyland!!!

Peppermint ice cream was my craving with my third DD. I think I sent DH out looking for it so many times he stocked up on it to last me well past the holiday season.

Well, that's a whole lot more normal than some cravings I've heard of!

Oh, and you mentioned earlier that it makes an excellent lunch...it also makes an excellent breakfast at DL (not that I ate a huge chocolate-covered peppermint ice cream cone with candy cane chunks for breakfast or anything, of course...:rolleyes1:rolleyes1;)).

Peppermint is a flavor that used to be more readily available at more ice cream shops and parlors in the past, I think. It doesn't seem like there are as many places that sell it regularly now - a lot of them wait until the holidays to sell it, or they don't sell it at all. It doesn't seem as common as it used to be - at least in my area.

I have to admit - now I am really curious to try the Dreyer's pumpkin ice cream...only because I have a feeling it is not very popular and I suppose I want to test it out. A cone is less of a commitment than a full carton, so I would prefer a cone or a cup. But Gibson Girl didn't sell the pumpkin stuff at all, from what I saw when I was there. So it's either get a whole carton or don't try it at all.

I got hooked on Schwan's Pumpkin ice cream a couple years back and it was soooo good..and with all that pumpkin I'm sure it was healthy too;)

Okay you got me, it was actually 10:30 am....I convinced myself it was an "early lunch". :rotfl:

I love the pumpkin ice cream that you can get at the store!! I think it's the Dreyers pumpkin and also at 31 flavors( baskin and robins) at the mall. Yum now I have to go get me some!!

The pumpkin ice cream has been in the stores since like August, so people are probably just bored with it by now. Out with the old and in with the new. The time has come to sell Christmas, not Halloween.

The pumpkin ice cream only got to my neighborhood Ralphs very recently (not in August), and some other stores around here don't carry it at all. It could just be a demographical/geographical thing. Maybe the people in my area of town don't buy a lot of pumpkin ice cream and so these stores don't order it early, and they don't order a lot of it if they do. There may not a lot of demand for it around here.

I was more surprised to not see the pumpkin ice cream at Gibson Girl for Halloween Time - I thought for sure they'd have it.
