Could I request a short-term board addition?

Maybe we need a special board where we all discuss whether there should be a board for politics and/or debates.

In my community (amongst my people) we talk politics, we wish one another happy birthday, we talk about frivolous things like what Disney means to us, and we talk about what's for dinner.

I know I haven't been here as long as others, but this community board seems quite compartmentalized. A community doesn't have to always get along 100%.

I was wondering about your thread, feralpeg . . . seems we were all playing nice on that one . . .

I don't believe the frustration is with the OP at all. Certainly we would prefer to be away from all the threads that do not interest us. The frustration comes in when we are constantly singled out and then some wonder why we are insulted.

And we are singled out. Why not ask for all the game threads to be moved? They certainly seem to stay on the front page. There are so many other categories that could be singled out. But it is always aimed at the same group...a group who, to repeat, lost their own home. How could we not feel like unwelcome temporary guests when people keep asking for us to be moved again?

::yes:: ::yes:: ::yes::

i certainly wasn't trying to pick on anyone. i like rajah. i was just expresisng my feelings and i tried to do it in a non-mean way. i really do feel bad posting political threads because it obviously makes some people here feel uncomfortable.

"It just seems to me that if we can have boards for crafts, gardening, and birthday wishes, I don't see why we can't have a special board for something as talked-about as politics. Maybe we could make it a politics/ current events board. That way we can return the CB to fluffy threads and friendly conversation that many of us have to to expect and enjoy here."

When the debate board was closed, many people used that argument. We were told "too bad, so sad, sucks to be you".

We were told to deal with the CB and then listened to the CB complain about how the DBers were ruining their precious board.

Ah well...it is what it is. Pete's boards, Pete's rules....

Not at all.

I just felt that with the elections coming up, we're already seeing a flood of political discussions and my bet is we'll have a *lot* more before November, and I thought that those who wanted to participate in them might like having them all in one place.

When the "happy birthday" and "congrats on reaching XXX posts" threads got to be "too many", they got their own subboard.

When war discussion became a primary topic, it got its own subboard.

I thought the political discussions should do the same. :)

No insult intended at all to those who are posting political discussions.
Then I sit corrected. :o My apologies for misreading your OP.

I don't see what the big deal about Rajah expressing her opinion is either. So what, she doesn't like political threads and wish they would go away. The tone of the CB has changed since the DB and the CB became one, its not exactly rocket science figuring that out.
Maybe people need to look at where the true "fault" for that lies. It takes an outside hand to mix oil and vinegar -- the two don't just jump together naturally. ;)
She has every right to request that another board be set up for the political threads. Just as those who are still reeling over the decision to close the DB have a right to express their opinions. Change makes some people uncomfortable and it is certainly in their rights as a member of the DIS community to express that opinion.
The DB was shut down some time ago and there were numerous threads on the CB welcoming former DB-ers, asking why the DB was shut down, debating the value of combining the DB and CB... The powers that be made it fairly clear why the decision was made and that it was final. Despite numerous appeals from former DBers and CBers, no reprieve has been granted and I doubt one ever will.
I personally like the political threads on ocassion, although I can say I always stop reading after the first 4 or 5 pages because they get repetitive after that. And its been a pleasure getting to know some of the DB people I might not have encountered otherwise. But if I felt differently I certainly hope that I could express that without being jumped on. She expressed herself politely and never once insinuated that the people who were active on the DB or those who liked to discuss politics were unwelcome. That is just putting words in her mouth, plain and simple.
Maybe you should try to read posts more carefully. ::yes::

What snoopy said, word for word...

I liked the fact that the DIS has many boards, I have absolutely no use for some of them so I have never wandered over there. I "inherited" all of the controversial crap and to tell you the truth, I would LOVE it gone. Just as everyone says they had no choice but to come here, those who were here weren't given the choice either. Threads like this one come up NOT because of the 3 or 4 threads per page, because of the tone of most of these threads. A debate does not have to be riddled with condescension and attitude, which is probably why the DB no longer exists. The very people who insist it's their right to have and give an opinion give the OP heck about expressing themselves.

No, just like this election and American Idol, there seems to be no way to deal with this in a civil manner. Too many strong opinions and emotion.

Honestly, I never came to the CB much until the DB was closed. I've "broadened my horizons" ;) Not that I'm going to be suddenly addicted to pixie dust or anything (no offense to those who like that sort of thing), but it has been nice to see another side of things.

The key point, I think is exactly what Robinrs said... A debate does not have to be riddled with condescension and attitude. Nor should it be.

I'm as stubborn and opinionated as they come, but I hope I haven't been uncivil towards anyone. I enjoy hearing about opinions that differ from mine and discussing the reasons for that. It allows me to either reinforce the reasons for my beliefs or re-evaluate them.

Strong opinions are not less strong because they are civil.

If I have ever gone too far in debates with anyone, I apologize. While I understand the desire to create a separate bb for political threads, I think the reality is that such threads will be on the CB for the forseeable future. As such, can't we all (DBers, CBers, those with purple elephants in their signature) just be a bit more civil to each other?

This has been an interesting, albeit baffling, thread. Of my 1000+ posts, nearly all of them have been on the Disney-specific boards because after all this is the Dis and I found it while researching my 2002 trip in 2001. I have not yet really determined the 'point' (not really 'point' but cannot come up with appropriate term) of the CB. I remember wandering into the DB maybe a year ago thinking upon entering "What is there to debate about Disney?" Boy, did I ever get an eye opening. Not for me at all. A month, two months, etc. ago I had pretty much 'caught up' with the Parks, Restaurants, Budget, and Resorts boards and began wandering again. I wandered into the CB thinking to myself "Ah, the dis community - that must be a fun place to get to know other Disney-loving people." After reading some, posting some, I still am not quite sure what to make of this board. When I think of 'community', I think of people supporting people. My definition may or may not be shared, but there are clearly some arguments, debates, posts that do not bring together a community but seem to want to divide. I tend to not participate in debating because I have not been persuaded by anything I've read to change my views and I doubt that anything I can say (post) will change anyone else's view either. My political view is just that - mine. I don't read the majority of those type of posts and I stop reading those that get turned into political bashing of one side or the other.

Like the OP, I think having those issues discussed in one congregated area is a good idea; however, I can continue to just skip over them as well.

Obviously, from my number of posts, I spent a long time on the CB before I ever heard of the DB. I probably followed a thread that got bumped from the CB to the DB. My first reaction was utter shock. I could not believe the way people spoke to each other.

I used to go over and lurk, but it always seemed to scary for me, and I would scurry on back to the other boards. The first time I felt motivated enough to post, a couple of regulars wiped the floor with me. It was not pretty.

And, yet, their topics interested me, and I kept lurking. And finally began posting regularly. There are things I did not know about the DB posters for a while...things people on the CB may still not be aware of. These people have been sparring with each other for a long time. Most of them have a grudging respect for each other. And most of them know exactly how to yank the others' chain, and do soon a regular basis. Often what looks like nastiness to the uniniated, is just one of the ways they communicate. They are all good people. They just communicate in a way that is not always easily understood.

No one is happy that we all have to live together now. But it is what it is. DBers are no happier about sorting through the topics that do not interest them any more then CBs are. And when the topic is about how the DBs are spoiling everything ( not that this thread is saying that ) it is hard not to bristle. Wouldn't you if it were reversed?

At the end of the day, we all have to make room for eah other. Let's do it as gracefully as possible.

fik, your posts are usually so right-on. :)

now i'm not saying everyone is like this, but a lot of the "nastiness" on db threads are actually just inside jokes.
