Could I request a short-term board addition?

Maybe that's the whole purpose behind it?

Not at all.

I just felt that with the elections coming up, we're already seeing a flood of political discussions and my bet is we'll have a *lot* more before November, and I thought that those who wanted to participate in them might like having them all in one place.

When the "happy birthday" and "congrats on reaching XXX posts" threads got to be "too many", they got their own subboard.

When war discussion became a primary topic, it got its own subboard.

I thought the political discussions should do the same. :)

No insult intended at all to those who are posting political discussions.

I think that's a great idea.

I guess I was looking at the OP's request as a logistical issue, rather than one that would alienate someone or hurt his or her feelings. Please don't read my post as a personal attack on anyone's interests or opinions.

On the cruise board, cruise meets have their own special sub-board because the number of cruises is voluminous. This board has a special sub-board for birthday wishes. With the election approaching, the number of threads regarding it is sure to increase. After all, it is the most important issue facing our community at this time. And I agree, the number of threads of this nature is inconsequential at this time.

Miss Jasmine - LOL!

You get the government you deserve.

If you don't participate in politics, you've no right tocomplain when things go wrong.

We should all be discussing politics. Especially this year, when so much is riding on the election.

i think it makes great sense....and don't understand why everyone is getting offended by the suggestion...wouldn't it be easier for everyone trying to follow the political discussions to have them in one place?

But there are much more productive ways to do that than on the DIS where the same arguments are made over and over.

Or perhaps I should say that just because someone doesn't partake in the discussions here it doesn't mean they aren't participating in politics in other ways.

It used to be in one place. It was called the Debate Board. If there is a Political Board aren't you just resurrecting the DB with a different name.

Heck the election was last month.
Paul Martin's Liberals won and has a minority government. Wow you folks didn't hear ;)

Cheers,

I took Rajah's request for exactly what it was... a convenient place for people looking for political threads to go... I did not see the request as an alienation but rather a convenience... with the election coming up, it would be nice to keep up on postings that one would miss out on if they can't get here everyday... oh well... I knew what you meant, Rajah... :D

I agree 100% with Rajah. It would make it much easier for both users to find (or, in some cases, avoid) political discussions and easier for moderators to... well... moderate them. This can limit both the amount of thread drifts that start out as one thing and end up as political arguments by having them be able to say, "If you would like to speak your views, we have a special place for that insteed of taking over someone else's threads". Seems like a win-win to me. :teeth:

We used to have a place around here like that, it was the debate board.

we had a place. It was taken away and we were redirected here. Since then there have been many many many threads about how the CB has been ruined by us...we take up too much space...we offend you when you accidently open a thread......how else is that to be interpreted other that " you do not belong here " ......this is supposed to be a place for all of us. We sail blithely by the threads that do not interest us. When people insist that they should not have to deal with the things that interest us, how else could we react but to be offended?

oh, and PS...when we complained that we needed a separate place we were told, tough, this is your home now, deal with it...and yet no one ever seems to tell those complaingin ABOUT us that it is time to let it go.

The debate board wasn't just politics was it?

Even if they do make a politics board, that's still going to leave a lot of non-PD threads discussing other non-political issues.

Maybe instead of making a new political board or brining back the debate board, there should be a pixie dust and agree with me all the time board.

Just putting my .02 in... I have NO problem with anyone posting on this board... Although I tend to keep my political views to myself, I do enjoy reading others... I thought it would be easier to find... and I don't feel that Rajah meant anything disrespectful either... sorry...

I don't see what the big deal about Rajah expressing her opinion is either. So what, she doesn't like political threads and wish they would go away. The tone of the CB has changed since the DB and the CB became one, its not exactly rocket science figuring that out.

She has every right to request that another board be set up for the political threads. Just as those who are still reeling over the decision to close the DB have a right to express their opinions. Change makes some people uncomfortable and it is certainly in their rights as a member of the DIS community to express that opinion.

I personally like the political threads on ocassion, although I can say I always stop reading after the first 4 or 5 pages because they get repetitive after that. And its been a pleasure getting to know some of the DB people I might not have encountered otherwise. But if I felt differently I certainly hope that I could express that without being jumped on. She expressed herself politely and never once insinuated that the people who were active on the DB or those who liked to discuss politics were unwelcome. That is just putting words in her mouth, plain and simple.

I don't believe the frustration is with the OP at all. Certainly we would prefer to be away from all the threads that do not interest us. The frustration comes in when we are constantly singled out and then some wonder why we are insulted.

And we are singled out. Why not ask for all the game threads to be moved? They certainly seem to stay on the front page. There are so many other categories that could be singled out. But it is always aimed at the same group...a group who, to repeat, lost their own home. How could we not feel like unwelcome temporary guests when people keep asking for us to be moved again?

Well, it works both ways. I've seen lots of sneering and condescending comments about the pixie dust crowd, too. And there have been some equally nasty comments about the "nasty DB people". But I think those type of comments really have been minimal, considering you mixed two boards that were vastly different in tone.

It just seems to me that if we can have boards for crafts, gardening, and birthday wishes, I don't see why we can't have a special board for something as talked-about as politics. Maybe we could make it a politics/ current events board. That way we can return the CB to fluffy threads and friendly conversation that many of us have to to expect and enjoy here.

I agree with Rajah, but I'm almost afraid to say so. I posted a similar thread and it has since been removed. I'm not sure why.
