Could I have possibly brought any more winter clothes to Florida? Jan26-Feb2 THE POLY

I am loving your report (so detailed!!) and have subscribed :)

Just a quick question - though you may have said and I've just missed it, but what kind of a room did you pay for at the Poly? Lagoon View? Garden View?

Thanks so much! Glad you like it :goodvibes

Our room was a bit of a mystery to me too. We booked a Garden View so I was wondering if we got an upgrade when I saw it (but the CM called it a garden). I think the water outside is considered a marina and not the lagoon so maybe that's why it's not a lagoon view? I guess there's a huge variation in what you can get in a garden view. Our room last year was clearly a garden.

I pretty much did all the planning for this trip. Ken told me he would do whatever I wanted, and eat wherever I wanted. His only request was that we take a day off. I thought this was a fair deal, but a part of me still hates to take time away from the parks. I feel like we should get in as many hours as physically possible since we only go about once a year. Our first trip was only 5 days long so we didn’t take any off. We went straight through until we were so tired that we were ready to leave. I think my hope is that I get kind of sick of it by the end so that I don’t feel bad when it’s over! I hate being depressed because the vacation is over so if I've exhausted myself I won't feel bad leaving. No relaxing vacations for me. I can do nothing whenever I feel like it but I can’t ride Everest whenever I want.

On our last trip, I tried as hard as I could to schedule a day off mid-week. I didn’t quite work out though. My plan was to sleep in and then hang out at the resort and go to Epcot just before dinner. Well, we still needed to eat that day so I figured it would be a good time for a character breakfast. The only problem was that the last seating was at around 10:30. That didn’t really let us sleep in much at all since we usually get to the parks even later than that! The breakfast at Ohana was fun and Ken got licked by Pluto. He said it kind of hurt. Since that meal was an extra that I threw in at the end and not included on our dinning plan, we actually had to fork over the cash. Ken said they were the best $50 waffles he had ever had! (I made a mental note to cross character breakfast off our list of things to do on the next trip. $70 for a character dinner is just somehow more reasonable than $50 for breakfast for people who never eat a real breakfast!).

One more funny thing that happened on our “not so off” day off last year: We had some friends that bought one of the personalized tiles at Epcot a few years ago and hadn’t seen it yet because they hadn’t been back. They gave us the number and asked us to take a picture of it for them. Near their tile we found this funny one. I wonder if Weezer and Bingo are dogs? And did Walter’s Mom have such a long name that it wouldn’t fit on the tile? Or has she just lost her identity?
IMG_2715.jpg

This year I promised that we could actually sleep in until whenever we wanted on our day off. I had a vague plan to drag myself out of bed and go over to Captain Cooks to pick up some Tonga Toast and bring it back to the room. It was a great idea and would have worked out perfectly had it not been for the fact that I just couldn’t get up. The bed was so nice and warm and cozy. They only serve the toast until 10:30. It was just a two minute walk there, I could even see it from my window yet I still didn’t make it. How pathetic is that? Oh well, we still had a few more days right? We finally got ready by about 12 or so. I thought we could just have a quick lunch at Captain Cooks but Ken didn’t want to eat at a counter service. He really wanted to go back to Kona. I figured it wouldn’t be difficult to get in since we had changed a bunch of reservations at the last minute already. We headed over and got seated right away. I wasn’t really hungry so I ate about a fourth of my club sandwich and took the rest back to the room. I figured we could eat it the next day. I like the view of the lobby from just outside Kona.
IMG_0396.jpg

Ken wanted to take a boat over to the Wilderness Lodge just to see it. We had seen the outside a few years ago when we were on Magical Express and dropping off some other people but had never seen the inside. We also had never taken the boat from the Poly to the Magic Kingdom so we got to do that too. Did I mention that Ken loves boats? Anyways, we took a boat to MK and then transferred to the WL boat. This was on the way to MK:
IMG_0400.jpg

The ride to WL was really fun and I had never been over the bridge before. It was crazy!!! If you haven’t seen it, there’s a highway that goes under the lagoon so as you’re crossing over it, cars are driving underneath. It’s like a bridge in opposite-land.

The WL was pretty. They had a great lobby with the running stream. We walked around a little and then decided to catch a bus to Downtown Disney. As we were waiting for the bus I played around with the settings on monster cam. I was trying to see if I could get more light somehow to improve the night shots. I think this setting only works in daylight though. I actually have no idea and should just take a photography course.

The bus took quite a while to show up. We actually ran into Ken’s parents while we waited. They had parked at WL and then walked to Fort Wilderness to walk around the grounds and were just heading back to their car when they saw us. With all the places they could have been, they just happened to be exactly where we were. (Well, if you really think about it though, they had just as much of a chance of being there as they had of being anywhere else so it wasn’t actually that much of a big thing). It was still pretty cool though.

The bus finally arrived and then we took a grand tour of the World on the way to DTD. We stopped at other resorts and then backtracked to where we started, but then took a detour and went to Blizzard Beach which was closed. I think some people got off there. I wonder if they realized it was closed? It was just a really long ride. Going to DTD seemed like a good idea at the time and I remember spending almost a whole day there 7 years ago. (We were in Orlando for a friend’s wedding and spent one day at MK, and our return day at DTD). Ken’s Mom had warned us that there wasn’t that much to do there but we didn’t listen. I was really not impressed. We walked through a bunch of stores that didn’t have much more than what I had already seen at the parks. For some reason I just wasn’t into it. I did buy a few things though. My sister wanted a whimsical mug since she said nobody had ever bought her one before. She wanted this Cheshire Cat, and I wanted Mike Wazowski.
catandmike.jpg

Unfortunately they weren’t sturdy at all. They seemed extremely fragile and light. I figured I would just get her the cat since she requested it.

Ken said “yeah, that’s a good idea, she can always glue it back together”.

Well, I didn’t get it. I bought her one with Tinkerbell and scenes from Peter Pan. Afterwards I had the feeling that it was the same one that we had already seen in the Disney Store that she said she didn’t want. I really wish I had a better memory. I hope she doesn’t hate it. I also bought one of those lenticular glasses, the one with the characters watching fireworks. I love those! Sucks that they can’t go in the dishwasher though.

Our trip wasn’t a total bust but I definitely think we could have done better. We caught the bus back to the Poly which took at least another hour. It stopped absolutely everywhere. This was a particularly annoying ride because people sitting at the back on opposite sides of the bus decided that they should become friends and yell across to one another. Usually people talking are sitting beside each other so it’s much quieter. Maybe I was just in a bad mood by then, but by the time I got back I was so fed up with busses that I said I was never riding one again. DTD was dead to me. The Studios and AK were dead to me. I was only going to go to the Monorail parks (I was joking of course because I really needed at least one more ride on Everest!). Actually that was my most whiny complaint filled update. The rest will be happier!

Up next: Our best dinner of the trip at California Grill.

Ken loves the different types of Disney transportation. He thinks some are more magical than others though.

His mom on the other hand, drank some and her reaction was “mmmm sparkling water”.

What? No, that’s not right, you’re not supposed to say it’s good! You’re not supposed to like it!! You’re supposed to make an awful face and I’m supposed to record it and laugh!

I asked again and she told me once more, “it’s good, it tastes like sparkling water”.

Ken took her cup and tasted it. “Nope, she got a dud. It’s just the water and none of the syrup”

Noooooooo!!!! My evil plan was foiled by a malfunctioning pop dispenser!!!

I imagined what was probably going through her head as she drank this carbonated water. “Why would they drag me here and make such a big deal out of water? It’s nothing special, it’s just water. I thought my kids had better taste than this. I’ll be nice and pretend to like it just so they don’t feel bad”.

We went to another fountain and got her some full-strength Beverly. She’s really sweet so she agreed to let me re-do the video with the proper yuck faces.

Lesson learned: if you’re going to do the Beverly, taste it yourself first to make sure it’s bad!

I got a big kick out of this scene. I like your writing style because you make it easy to visualize what is going on. I especially liked your idea on what might have been going through your mother-in-law's mind as she tried Beverely. That was too funny!:lmao:

Thanks so much! I'm glad you enjoyed it. Yeah, I was wondering what must have been going through her head when we made such a big deal out of carbonated water!

I actually haven't posted on the DIS since March (just lurked here and there without logging in) and I had kind of given up on finishing this report. I checked it a few months ago and it was 6 or 7 pages back so I just let it go. I logged on today and saw that it had an unread post. YAY!!! I think I'm going to go ahead and finish it.

Yes, please finish it! I am enjoying it a lot!!

YAY! I'm glad you like it!!

Trip report continued:

I just found my trip file and saw that I had written a part of it that I didn't get to post at the time so here's the first half of California Grill. The next part will require photos so I still have to find those and upload them.

We made it back to the resort just in time to get ready for dinner. I was wishing that we had just spent more time at our resort that day. I didn’t do a very good job planning did I? We could have just sat by the volcano pool. I say this now, but if we would have done that, I would have been wondering if we should have gone to DTD instead! Don’t you wish you could try out all your options and then choose the one you like best? I’m actually not a pool person at all so that’s why I never considered a pool day. I’m also not sure why I’m regretting not sitting by the pool either. I mean, really, I didn’t even have a pair of shorts to wear. I think I bought my last bikini in 1997. The funny thing is that my sister is the complete opposite. She LOVES vacations where you just sit by the pool or on the beach and do nothing. She buys bikinis constantly even if she has no vacation planned. When she goes away she brings a different one for each day with several back-ups just in case. In some ways we’re so alike it’s frightening, but in other ways we’re almost not even related. She really wants me to go on one of those all inclusive resort trips with her where they feed you three buffets a day and let you watch magic acts at night. She promises it will be fun but I’m still undecided.

I seem to keep going off on tangents for some reason. Back to this trip: By the time we got back from DTD it was time to get ready for dinner at California Grill. I was really looking forward to this one! When we stayed at the Contemporary we had taken a trip up the elevator just to see the restaurant but we didn’t actually eat there. (Now I don’t think they’ll even let you look without a reservation because someone escorted us up in the elevator). The restaurant was HUGE and had the most amazing view! Our table wasn’t ready so we sat at the bar area for a while. Ken ordered a guy drink (something with gin) and his Mom tasted it and made a yuck face. That’s the face she was supposed to make with Beverly!

After a about 20 minutes we were led to our table and told that we could go out to the balcony to watch the fireworks starting 10 minutes before and no sooner. I guess they didn’t want people waiting all night for a good spot. We ate in the back room which was kind of closed off from the rest of the restaurant. I liked it in there. There were several families with young kids and they were all incredibly well behaved. We had a great view from the large windows and at one point the electrical water parade went by. We weren't facing MK but we could see a lot of the rest of Disney property as well as other parts of Orlando.

Coming up: the amazing food and the view of Wishes from the balcony!

Finally, the food!!

We ordered the cheese plate to share first. This was delicious and we probably could have ordered a few more of these and still finished them. Unfortunately I don’t have the names of all the cheeses but from what I can read off the picture three of them are Flixer, Vermont Fresh Crottin and Fourme d’Ambert (the blue cheese in the front). Some of the complements were a fig cake, raisins on the vine, and candied almonds.

IMG_0421.jpg

After thoroughly enjoying the cheese plate, they made an announcement that we should move to the balcony for Wishes. The servers came around and covered everyone’s dishes to keep them warm as people left their tables. There were two balconies, and the one closest to MK was full so we went onto the farther one. We moved right to the end of the balcony where there was some empty space so we had a wonderful unobstructed view. They piped the Wishes music onto the balcony as the fireworks started. What surprised me the most was that many of the fireworks were coming from what looked like somewhere behind Space Mountain but in reality could have been even farther than that. The pictures didn’t turn out quite as well as they should have, but you can see that the castle is quite far from where they’re going off. The last picture shows two sets going off, one from just behind the castle and the other from much further away.

IMG_0427.jpg

It was really interesting to see them from a different perspective. It looks like they always come from right behind the castle when viewed from Main Street.

By the time we got back to our table the main course had arrived. I decided I wanted the sushi as my meal (rainbow roll). It had a of couple of types of fish I hadn’t heard of and I can’t remember the names of them at the moment, along with the standard salmon and tuna. The roe was a little weird at first because it had a crunchiness to it when the skin broke, as if each little sphere was exploding. Other than that it was probably some of the best sushi I’ve ever had (except what I had in Japan but that doesn’t count!). I finished almost all of it but just couldn’t eat the last two pieces so Ken and his Dad helped out. I haven’t had sushi since then and looking at the picture now makes me really hungry. Mmmmmm….. sushi……. Just wish I could have some now…

IMG_0442.jpg

Ken had the pork tenderloin. I didn’t try it but he said it was his best meal of the trip.

IMG_0443.jpg

For dessert Ken and I shared the Banana and Butterscotch Buzz. It was topped with a plantain. It was gooey and delicious.

IMG_0447.jpg

Ken’s parents shared the Honey Crunch cake

IMG_0445.jpg

Overall this was our best meal of the trip by far. Everyone left full and happy. The food, atmosphere and service were wonderful. Seeing a new side of Wishes was amazing.

Next up: Are we seriously going to do 3 parks in one day???? And I finally get my Tonga Toast!

We woke up kind of late on Thursday but I managed to pick up some Tonga Toast before Captain Cooks stopped serving breakfast. YAY! I knew if I tried hard enough I would eventually make it by 10:30. We sat on the balcony and enjoyed the view while we ate. Luckily I like sweet breakfasts because this was really rich. We split an order of it and it was plenty to get us through to a late lunch.

The plan was to go back to Animal Kingdom today to sneak in a few more rides on Everest. We got there just before noon and people were already starting to exit the park. We headed straight for Asia. On the way there we passed the wait times board and I noticed that it said Everest was down until further notice! We felt like the Grizwalds after they arrived at Walley World to find it closed. We imagined a CM saying “Sorry folks, Everest is closed. The Mouse out front should have told you”. Waaaaaahhhhh!!!! Now what? We didn’t want to wait around for an indefinite amount of time so we decided to ride Dinosaur and then check back afterwards.

Unfortunately Everest still wasn’t running after we rode Dinosaur. We decided to head to The Studios because Ken’s parents were there and we figured we could meet up with them for a few hours. We took some photopass pictures on the way out and then got back on the bus to the Studios.

Oh well, I guess you can’t control everything. It wasn’t an ideal start to the day but it could have been much worse! We got to the Studios and collected fast passes for RnR. The line was MUCH shorter than it had been on Monday!!! I couldn’t believe the difference. Ken’s dad phoned and told us he was in line for Tower, so we went to see if we could catch up with him. There was no line outside the building so we went right into the library. We didn’t find Ken’s dad until we exited. Everyone wanted to go see Lights Motors Action, which I wasn’t very interested in. I’ve seen it twice and it just doesn’t thrill me much. I came up with my most brilliant plan of the trip though. Ken and his parents could go see the stunt show, and I would ride RnR as many times as possible until they got back! This was the perfect way to eliminate our usual Studios stress. In the past Ken and I used to argue about whether to ride the rides or see the shows. Now that he had people to see the shows with, I could just ride as much as I wanted! YAY!! They went off towards the show while I got in line for RnR. I didn’t even need the fast passes because I could walk right into the Aerosmith room. There wasn’t even much of a line after that and I was in the front row in about 5 minutes. It’s amazing what a difference the day of the week makes in wait times! This ride made up for the extra fast pass we had on Monday but never got to use. I exited and then ran right back on two more times. By the third ride I was feeling a little dizzy though. I actually let a bunch of people go ahead of me just to get a little more of a break in between. That was a first for me!!!! Usually Ken has to hold me back so that I don’t lose him in a mad dash for the doors. After that I figured everyone would be finished with the stunt show so I just waited outside. They eventually showed up and Ken’s Dad said he wanted to do RnR too so we went back for a fourth ride. On the way in the cast member at the entrance said “you’re going on by yourself again?” Haa haa I guess it’s kind of weird to see someone riding repeatedly on their own. I pointed to Ken and his Dad and said “no, I have friends this time”.

Next up: Epcot, our third park of the day :scared1:

Afterwards we were getting hungry so we decided to go to Epcot for a late lunch. We didn’t even bother trying to find food at the Studios. Ken’s parents had the car so we got to Epcot rather quickly, although un-magically. We could tell it was pretty empty because it was already 2 PM and we parked pretty close to the entrance. We stopped for a photopass picture and Ken's parents left us! I guess they were really hungry. They said they would meet us later for dinner.

We spent pretty much all of our time in World Showcase. We had lunch in Norway (the smoked salmon sandwich, can't remember what it's actually called). I liked it but I could have done without the egg that was also on it. I wanted to try the school bread since everyone here raves about it but I didn't think I would be able to eat that much. I guess it's something to look forward to next time. Since we were in Norway we rode Maelstrom (our longest line of the day for some reason!). We wandered over to China and Ken wanted to see the exhibit. I said we could if I could take a picture with the little red dragon that was standing at the entrance with no line! YAY I love it when that happens.

Then I kept my promise and we went through the exhibit. I can't remember much about it but I do have this picture.

IMG_0473.jpg

After that we found a great photopass photographer, she was really into it and posed us in different spots. I like the way this one turned out because it looks like it could have been taken anywhere.

We coincidentally ran into Ken's parents outside of Germany afterwards. It's funny how that kept happening! They were heading in the opposite direction so we didn't stay with them long. I saw Dopey and went to line up for a picture but stupidly didn't notice that there was no photographer with him. Ken's dad was nice enough to notice me looking like a loser in line and come to take the picture for me. I still haven't seen it though, it's on his camera! When we visit them next time I'll still have brand new Disney pictures to look at. :)

The sun was setting now so Ken got some cool pictures. I think he should have been our photographer since he takes better pictures than I do.

The afternoon was uneventful for the most part. I think we just went into stores and took pictures. Just outside of France I saw Marie and she also had no line!!!

We were going through a bookstore in the UK when I saw they had Tigger, Winnie and Eeyore all posing for pictures. We got in line (Ken made an exception to his no line rule since it's rare to see three characters at once). Unfortunately after they let the group in front of us in, the CM said that the characters would be taking a short break to go and have some ice-cream and birthday cake and would return shortly. I decided I didn't want to make Ken wait so we left. However, every time Ken needed to use the restroom after that, he would announce "I'm going to make some birthday cake". :lmao:

We made it as far as Canada and sat around for a while when I realized that I really DID want that picture because there were three characters together. I'm such a brat! I don't know how Ken puts up with me. We went back to the UK and found that only Pooh and Eeyore had returned from making birthday cake.

Pooh saw my Pal Mickey and stole him from me. I have a feeling that Pooh likes to steal things. One time in Disneyland I was carrying a red fleece sweater and Pooh took it, claiming that it was his. He kept pointing to both sweaters saying they were the same. The CM had to force him to give it back when we were leaving.

We were getting close to our dinner ADR by that time so we headed over to the Living Seas. We rode Nemo while we waited for Ken's parents to meet us. There was also time to sneak in one last picture.. I love the lighting here...

Dinner was at Coral Reef, and it was by far my least favourite of the trip. The scenery was beautiful, and I loved watching all the fish in the aquarium but I think Ken was the only one who enjoyed his entree. His mom was feeling sick from a bad lunch (overly greasy fish and chips) and couldn't even eat anything. His dad's fish was too dry (unfortunately I can't remember what it was), and I had an appetizer as my meal. I had the surf and turf which was three shrimp and two pieces of steak on a skewer. I had planned to do this because I wanted two desserts so I was saving room. Mine didn't taste bad but I think none of us were really in the mood for dinner for some reason. Our server was just ok in comparison to all the others we had and he didn't say much until he brought the cheque. Dessert was good though, I had the chocolate Bailey's mouse and the chocolate wave (Ken helped with both, so I'm not THAT bad). I only took pictures of dessert.

Next up: our last full day  and somehow ended up at three parks AGAIN! :rotfl2:
