Could I be happy with a switch to FF?

Yeah, I'm sure I'll welcome that extra bit of reach on the "walk around" lens. I'm more concerned with whether I'll be happy enough with the 200 end of the zoom once I get it. I've been using a 50-150 on a crop sensor and been ok with that. But I'll be losing a little bit of that length at 200 now. And I always kept an all in one lens around for times I really wanted to stretch that length out more.

I won't lie... You might miss it a bit. But, the extra IQ on the 6D will give you more cropping room. So in the end, after some cropping, you might find you aren't missing it much at all.
In fact, on my camera, I have a 200/2.8 prime, and I also have the Tamron 70-300 usd, which is full frame. The IQ of the 200 is just so amazing, that I prefer using it over the Tamron, even when reach is an issue. (I did get a 2x teleconverter which I use sparingly as well).

I already missed the length at 150 and cropped down a bit. So I'm sure I'll continue doing that with 200 on a FF. Really though, IQ trumps all of it for me, so it will be fine.

OK, so the title of the thread was "Can I be happy with a switch to FF?"

I sure hope the answer is yes. Because I called B&H yesterday and they said they would allow me to exchange the Sigma lens toward a 6D. So that's just what I did. I got the kit with the 24-105 f/4. Still not sold on whether I'll be OK without that, but what's one more lens to sell if I decide against it? ;)

I really just had this irrational obsession with wanting to try something known for its incredible low light performance. And my 4 year old T2i has been misbehaving lately and I knew it was time to consider something new. Best to strike while I could at least apply the cost of the Sigma lens to it.

I think I'll be OK with the extra size and weight. I might miss some of the reach, but I'm sure I'll make peace. :)

Many thanks to everyone here for helping me think this through.

Ya done good. You'll be surprised with the 24-105. Guaranteed. It's not the be-all, end-all, but no lens really is.

Welcome to the FF club. Can't wait to hear how you like it. I LOVE mine.

Congrats on the new camera. Be sure to keep us posted.

Thanks! I've never been one to keep my thoughts to myself, so I'm sure I'll have plenty to say. :)

Thanks again for all your help and feedback.

Just tell me I'm going to love that lens as much as I have loved that dang 17-55. That one will probably be the last one I part with, assuming I ever do. If I decide to let it go, I'd probably have to adopt it out instead of selling it. ;)

Congratulations on your new camera! The chart in the article I referenced shows just how far beyond APS-C (and micro 4/3) FF really is, the image quality takes a big jump ahead. I am sure you will like it! :) I carried a 24-105 from early 2006 to late 2011 as my "go to" lens. One of my friends used it for a half hour and ordered one the next week, it is a good one.

Thanks Bob! That's just the sort of thing I need to hear while I sit here passing the time waiting for the UPS man to arrive later this week. :)

It all makes me nervous. I mean..... if I get less than desirable images now, I will have only myself to blame! :lmao:

Here. Here's a goal for ya. Oughta give you all kinds of warm and fuzzies for the 24-105/4. :rotfl2:

I have a quick question for those of you with Canon's nifty fifty. I've had it for years, but it's the most under-utilized lens in my collection. I've never been a fan of this focal length so I don't take it out very often. I did get it out last week for volleyball, as the focal length seems perfect and my 2.8 lenses were still coming up a little short in shutter speed.

I really have been disappointed with the focus on this. I started with it at 1.8 but tried stopping down just a bit. If I stop down too much, I might as well go back to the 2.8 lenses though.

Is this lens generally considered soft wide open?

The 50mm f/1.8 is soft wide open, but it sharpens up significantly by f/4. But according to photozone.de it should still be sharper than the 17-55mm. It's possible it's the sub-par focus motor on the 50mm f/1.8 II that's letting you down, your 17-55mm is a USM focus motor and it much better.

:rotfl:

Yeah, I'll have to pass for now. Or maybe I'll win the lottery. You know..... if I start playing.

Remind me never to rent one of those either. Or it might ruin all my fun with the 24-105.

The Disney photographer assigned to our wedding had one and when he saw our party with four Canon dSLRs he let us all try the 24-70. It's heavy!

Congrats on the new camera! It's a fantastic one. I'm not a fan of the Canon 50's, but the 40 STM pairs great with the 6D and it makes a small package.

I'm not big on primes. I love the flexibility of zoom. I generally only use primes if they can help me in low light situations. Not sure I'll be using this lens if I can't use it at wider apertures.

Strike 2! :rotfl: You know, cuz the price tag wasn't enough.

Thanks for that! I think I'll be checking out something else once I sell some other lenses. I'll add that to the list of what I want to investigate. I wonder how that compares to the Sigma 30.

Congrats! I really can't wait to hear what you think of it straight out of the box. Disneyland here you come!!!!!
