Couch to 5K running plan...has any tried it?

Ditto Corinna - I have extremely high arches and find that Adiasas shoes fit better. My good friend has flat feet and finds New Balance shoes fit better. A shoe store employee should be able to help you find the right pair! (I have two right pairs now and alternate them.)

Do you recommend buying two pairs to alternate?

Hi Drag n' fly!

I am so excited for you starting C25K - it is an amazing program. When I started, I had some running shoes that weren't all they could be for me. I went to a local running store and they helped me find some that are just amazing. For me, anyway. I don't know that they are the perfect shoe for everyone. So much depends on your individual foot shape and how your body naturally runs. I can tell you what I have, but there is no guarantee you will love it, KWIM? For what it is worth, it is the Nike Air Structure Triax 10+.

Have you found the podcasts? They are so nice for the intervals at the start of the program.

Take care!

Thanks for the support! Yes I did find the podcasts! My last child starts kindergarten this fall and I am going to be 41 in 14 days. I just want to finally focus on myself and my health and feel good about myself now that I am going to have more time.

Oh, I don't know? I bought the first pair because they were on clearance, and the second pair because I had a $20 off coupon. I probably don't need both but I'm a woman who can't pass up a sale. :rolleyes1

:lmao:

I am the same way. I am 5'9 1/2 and bought a pair of 3 1/2 inch heels at payless on a clearance rack for 5 bucks because I could not pass them up. Obviously at my height they are still sitting in the closet :thumbsup2

I think the suggestions to head over to our sport mart tomorrow and see a shoe guy is a smart idea.

You guys are funny. :) Seriously, I have heard it is a good idea to have two pairs in rotation to give the shoes more time to, um, spring back after a run? However, I am also convinced that at the mileage that you do in the first shoe's worth of running, it's really not that much of an issue. There are lots of theories on there about rotating shoes, too. I just have the one good pair, though. So far!

It feels so good to focus on your own health and happiness a little, doesn't it? How many kids do you have?

OH, I forgot to say that I have done almost all of my running on a treadmill, due to weather, logistics, and finally now, pollen. Blech. I, for one, am glad that it is a viable option!

I have three kids. We have had tons of rain look here:

Now we have tons of mosquitos and now that things are drying up the pollen is really coming out! I do not have a treadmill but a great fitness centre not even a five minute drive from the house so no excuses for me!

Welcome drag n' fly! Good luck on your c25k journey! It's been a very personally rewarding one for me and many others here. :thumbsup2

Keep us posted on your progress!

Oh, and I only have one good pair of running sneakers. They are Pearl Isumi or something like that. Got them at a local running store. I didn't have any luck at the Sports Authority fining an employee that knew what type of running sneakers I should use. (and they said I couldn't return them if they didn't feel right)

Hi guys! Just checking in after a long hiatus. For the newbies, hang in there! This program really works. I just finished my first 5K on memorial day. :cool1: I walked only through the drink stations and it still took me 41 minutes, but I finished without collapsing and that's the main thing. :rotfl2:

Now the problem is boredom. I'm tired of running the same route around my neighborhood, and the heat here is so brutal the only time it's possible to run is about 5:30 in the morning. Yeah right! Like that's going to happen!

I've fallen off the wagon since that Memorial Day 5K so I'll probably jump back in here with ya'll on about week 6 to get built back up. Keep up the good work!

Oh my gosh, Drag n'! That is a huge lot of rain. Unbelievable, really. I hope you live on a hill, cause - wow, that van almost completely under the water really makes you think.

It is too bad about the mosquito swarms. I think that is one of the most unpleasant reasons not to be able to run outside that I have heard.

A fitness center is even better than your own in some ways - if the treadmill you are on is having technical difficulties, THEY take care of it and you move to another machine. :) Have fun!

Hi there!

Tomorrow I am finishing up week 2. I've been doing this on the TM as I just figured until I get into some decent distances, I'd just watch the TM's timer tick tick tick.

I think I need to pick up a digital watch with some interval alarm ability...

As for my weight, I'm down 12.4 pounds! I'm working on the next 12!

Good luck everyone!

Hey Colleen! Way to go finishing up week 2! Also WTG on those 12.6 pounds! That is not easy. Are you doing something foodwise in addition to the C25K running?

I don't know about you, but for me, watching the numbers slowly tick by on the treadmill is really mentally tough for me. I have used a kitchen timer - a really cheap kitchen timer! - to measure out some of the intervals on days I wanted to listen to my own music rather than the podcast. Might be easier to work with than a watch in some ways, if you are on a treadmill. Just an idea. :)

Hi Corinna!

Well this morning I finished up C25K 2C. I made my exercise plan thru next Sat. & I will start 3A this Saturday off the TM - as we are going to a cabin. The distances & time are still short, but I'll just do the best I can with an old second hand sweep watch.

I read that there are podcasts to download. I am getting an ipod nano (I think that is what I am getting) next week, so I think I can download that sort of thing as well as record some of my music.

The TM is a bore but the C25K has such short intervals that I can't hide the timer. Also when I am walking, I screw around with the speed and hill grade constantly just to mix it up.

As for food, well I gave up on diets. I am now eating for my life. I am really watching my portions & try not to snack after dinner. I have always eaten pretty well until the evening, then go on a spree. Usually the spree was emotionally based. Another part of it was I probably wasn't getting enough calories earlier in the day, so now I have noticed I eat a larger dinner to try to offset the 'urge' to eat after dinner. I know what healthy food and habits are - the trick is just doing it. ;)

Ok well I made the next step in my journey today. I bought THE shoes! I bought some asics gt-2120 and man do they fit like a glove love love them!

The couch to 5K sounds great. Is this a thread for newbies like myself to post? about their experience. I'll be honest part of me thinks I could never run this far but I'd like to try.

I hope so since I am really really new at this. I am going to walk every day for 2 weeks then start this program. I would love to be able to run and hope one day it brings more joy than exhaustion!

Yes, this is absolutely the right place for people currently running or considering the C25K program. There are a couple of us old fogies hanging around still mostly to cheer you guys on. There is a graduates thread as well where we are trying to figure out where to go when we've finished C25K, but this isn't it. :)

I also have to say:

I'm glad you got shoes you love, drag n' fly! Shoes can make all the difference! And you are doing a great job. The first few weeks are always the toughest, but it is amazing how much you can improve in that short period of time.

Coleen, have fun running at camp! I am going to a cub scout camp this weekend and plan to do my run on Sunday instead, after I get home. I bet you'll do fine with your sweeping second hand. :) Oh, and there really are podcasts to download and they are very helpful for some of the longer intervals, I think. I'll post the link back here in a minute. I think it is on page one or two of the thread, too.

Ok, so today was my first C25K workout. I was kinda embarrassed, not being a runner (or even a really slow jogger). But I got thru it, and will do day 2 on Wednesday. Wish me luck. This thread inspired me to go for it.:thumbsup2

Anyone still going with the C25K at this point? It is perhaps a faux pas for me to bump this back on up, but it has been one of my favorite threads, I was looking for an old post and wondered how the running was going for those most recently doing the program. :)
