First time runner - need tips! My BFF and I are completing the Couch to 5K program. And as an added incentive, my birthday gift to her (and me!) is to RUN DISNEY! (we're from PA so this will be a real treat in January!):cool1:

Since the race is at Epcot, where is the best place to stay that will have the LEAST amount of travel time? When I come with DS14 we stay at the GF but I was looking at BC this time. Also are there any discounts (PIN codes) ever given out for race weekend?

Congrats on finishing your program and you will love running through Epcot as a celebration of your victory.

The BC or any Epcot resort is a great place to stay but you need to understand that if you are thinking of walking to the start, forget it. You will be busing to the race just like every other resort. I would say stay where you want to stay rather than attempting to minimize travel times for the expo and race. The Epcot resorts, CBR and Pop are the resorts that would fit the closest to the action resorts.

As far as discounts, I am not aware of any, yet. I would expect they will be coming out in the next month or so.

If you usually stay at a monorail resort, I would encourage one of those resort choices if you intend to do MK or Epcot on Saturday or Sunday. In the morning before the runners for the 1/2 and full clear the roads it's pretty impossible to get anywhere near MK taking a bus. Before I knew all about Run Disney events, we were at Disney during marathon weekend and were trying to get to MK the morning of the 1/2. We sat on that darn bus for an hour and a half. At least we had the park practically to ourselves when we finally made it... If you aren't early risers though, then this may not be as big of an issue.

I was wondering this myself....as I have started my C25K program.....I am hoping to do the Family 5K during marathon weekend. I was looking at The Boardwalk - but I just don't think I can afford it.
I see you have to bus to the start and the expo anyways, is there a benefit to staying at CBR say vs. Port Orleans?

I've haven't stayed at either for marathon weekend, but have stayed there other times of the year. Usually Port Orleans resorts share a bus, so there is one bus for about 3,000 guest rooms at Port Orleans. Caribbean Beach has around 2,000 rooms. The 5k is a smaller event than the other races that weekend, so transportation shouldn't be as crowded, although I'm sure the buses stop at more than one resort that morning. I don't think you can really go wrong with any resort during marathon weekend since there is transportation from all of them.

The work around for this blockage is to take a bus to Epcot (either regular Disney or Marathon) then monorail up to MK. BUT you have to know about the likelihood of traffic from the events. Disney usually does a great job of notifying guest of traffic issues that may arise from the events but not everyone reads the letter or understands.

I do not think you will have any issues with race transportation. The marathon buses run regularly and on race mornings field level dispatchers are manning the stops in the event of snafus. At either location look around on Thursday afternoon at the marathon bus patterns. As an example, at CBR the marathon busing will enter and exit through the Victory Drive entrance, not the main entrance (or did a few years back when we stayed there annually for the marathon). That means the first island picked up was Jamaica. It will give you an idea on if your stop is going to have a few drive bys (ie. the last o the loop) on race morning, or at least where you may need to walk to see the bus first.

I have a question about your phrase…” I see you have to bus to the start and the expo anyways”… Note that for the January races buses run from every resort to both the expo and race starts. This busing is not the regular Disney property busing, rather charter type buses with Marathon or Expo in the window. Depending on the resort, you may or may not have a special bus stop. For instance, the marathon buses stop at the convention center at the Boardwalk and Yacht Resorts, not at the regular bus stop. At CBR they historically stop at all stops and at OKW only some of the stops. Confusing but easy to spot once you arrive. Note that you do not have to ride a bus, you can drive if wanted. The buses are convenient and save on mental wear and tear but frankly I have driven to the race as many times as I have taken the bus; and even drive a higher percentage of time to the expo.

Just a word of advice, do not ask a cast member questions about bus transportation before Thursday morning, and even then you may want to confirm through several independent members. Disney is a great planning organization but they do not let the line folks know about upcoming changes until they actually need to know. I have held a Q&A session a few times in the check in area for the Boardwalk and CBR when I over hear a weekend question and see that the CM does not have the answer. It morphs from me asking if I can butt in to someone else having a similar question and then we tend to draw a crowd. The best piece of advice I can offer on race weekend is go with the flow and leave early just in case the flow was not right.

[ADDED] - OK Really final. The Pop makes a great marathon weekend resort, also; or at least until they open up the new section across the lake. It has one bus stop, shares nothing transportation wise and as an added bonus.... you are at the resort where the WISH folks meet for a pre-race meal!

I didn't even think about getting to MK that way. We were at the BWV at the time, and we did read the letter about transportation Saturday and Sunday morning. I don't recall them mentioning taking the bus to Epcot to get to MK, probably since there usually isn't a bus to the front of Epcot. I do remember the bus driver telling us that there was a lot of traffic, and the ride would take longer. It was before Epcot had opened, and he suggested to some that they wait until Epcot opened and walk through to the monorail. With a little one in tow we decided that we'd rather sit on the warm bus instead (this was in 2009 when it was freezing!)

I would just stay at the resort you would like to stay at without worrying much about the race. I've stayed at POP twice and the Swan once for marathon weekend and really didn't notice much of a difference when it comes to transportation. The one exception would probably be the monorail resorts but I wouldn't spend that kind of money for a hotel room anywhere, not even Disney. If you have a favorite resort or one you want to try I would just stay there without giving the 5K any thought.

Walking back to the hotel is good in theory if you are staying in one of the Boardwalk resorts but as mentioned already you can't walk to the start so you are going to take the bus at least once anyway. The 5K also starts at 6:30 and the park won't open until 9 so you will be waiting around a while if you want to walk back after the race.

Lastly, you have to remember that you will need park admission to walk through Epcot. If you plan on touring the parks that day and have a parkhopper it is easy but if you don't have a parkhopper once you use your ticket at Epcot that has to be your park for that day. I think a lot of people don't think about that.

Thanks!! Lots of info there - very helpful. I was thinking about Boardwalk and walking to the start - that is why I said the part about busing anyways....I figured walking to the start - not a good waste of energy!
So, what WISH folks are meeting up? :rolleyes1

Thanks so much for all the great tips. I guess I wasn't thinking that I could stay "anywhere" on property. I was thinking the closer the better. But I guess you have to take a bus from wherever you're at, right?

So where does the race actually start and finish?

Yes, busing runs from all resorts to the expo. Buses also run from all resorts for the 5k... At least from what observed when I stayed at BLT. I saw the 5k. Folks lined up at the convention center. For the full and half, monorail resorts do have access to the monorail on those race mornings. All other resorts have busing.

For the January Family Fun 5k the race starts and finishes in the Epcot parking lot. Here is a map of the course.

The races start and finish at Epcot. There is great value to staying at property, just for the transportation that weekend. Many offsite resorts will only be slightly cheaper than a value, if cheaper at all, and you'll have to drive to the start and back to your hotel after the event.

Thank you SO much for taking the time to help - I definitely know a lot more know and am really excited!!

If I book a package now can I also apply it? I just called the "special" number 407 WDW IRUN and they quoted me a rate that's $300 more than what I found on the website (she was using the "marathon special")...?? I was like "Um that's not really a special" haha. The CM didn't know what to say about it...so I'm booking the original offer now and crossing my fingers!!

Someone else might be able to confirm this better than me since I haven't done packages with Disney in awhile. As far as I remember you can definitely call and have prices adjusted on your package if a better deal comes out closer to your trip.

As long as the new discount isn't for new reservations only you can always apply a later deal to an existing reservation. If you are far enough out and a new reservation only discount does come out you can cancel and re-book.

I would call 407 WDISNEY or on line instead. You are generally more able to apply future discounts that usually apply, unless they must go on a new reservation. The IRUN (Sports) reservations line generally do not offer the same discount packages. The exception for using IRUN is for the Princess and W&D where they may offer discounted passes. That has not occurred for the January races to my knowledge. The biggest benefit for using IRUN on the January races is the free round of miniature golf. In addition, the IRUN deposit requirements are higher and penalties for late cancelling greater.
