Okay - help me decide. Here's the scenario. We've found the couch, we've found the fabric (microfiber), but I just can't decide on the color.

The foyer, dining room, study, and family room are all pretty easily seen from each room. Here's a layout.
Picture001.jpg

The study will be a sage green - dining room ? - foyer will be a taupe/mocha color - family room - taupe/mocha as well. The fireplace will have a deep red brick. That short wall at the bottom left portion of the family room is only a half wall. You can see directly into the dining room, as there are no interior walls on it, only that column. The sectional will sit right there in the nook.

So, here's my two choices.

Option 1 - Paint the dining room top half mocha with a chair rail and then a deep red below (not burgandy, but a very deep red). The red would not be really visible from the family room as it would be on the bottom portion of the wall. The couch for the family room would be red. All walls in the family room would be mocha. So, the dominant things are the brick fireplace and the couch. I would also have a very large picture or some other type of wall art above the couch.

Option 2 - Paint the dining room all red (top and bottom) and then paint just that long wall in the family room red as well - the rest of the family room would still be mocha. In this case, the couch is more of a camel color. So, now the dominant things are the fireplace and that wall - which again would have some sort of wall art to break up all of the red. The wall is 16' long.

I know the practical part of me says to get the camel couch because it's always cheaper to paint a wall. However, I REALLY REALLY love this red couch. But will I love it in 10 years??? I must say, that red is my favorite color, and I've always had some variation of it in my decorating schemes.

No, the house isn't complete yet, but the couch is on sale, and I can use it in our current home right now. Also, we've pretty much got to buy furniture for the entire house (with the exception of the bedrooms), and I hate to have to plop down a ton of money right after we move in - would rather do it a little along the way.

So, which option do you like better? Any other ideas too, feel free to share.

P.S. I did toy with doing the entire family room the same sage green color as the study, but wasn't sure if I would like that up against the red brick of the fireplace.

I would go with the camel color for the couch and do red pillows. That way, in a couple years or whenever, you can just change the colors of the pillows and get another new look. :cool1:

I think a long red wall in the family room will just compete with the fireplace, which the fireplace should be the focus of the whole room and it shouldn't have to compete with the paint.

That's my dilemna - and I agree with you on both points. BUT, the camel colored couch doesn't look good up against a neutral colored wall. So, it's either red wall/camel couch or vice versa.

Option 1...go with the red couch.
I love idea of half mocha/half red w/ chair rail.

I think having 1 wall of red in a family room will make you crazy after awhile. Red colors have a tendency to rub off easily and you end up having to retouch it all the time.
I just wouldn't do a whole wall "red" ever again.

Also with a red couch, you can use pillows, throws, covers, etc..to change the look.

And I'm so glad to hear you say that. DH looked at me like I was nuts when I made the EXACT same comment.

Didn't realize that about the color wearing off. That's another thought. I'm just really worried about doing that long of a wall red - WOW! that's just ALOT of red.

If you really like the red couch, then go for it! Who cares what you'll like in 10 years--you can deal with that then and if you have children and use the couch a lot it might not be in such wonderful shape in 10 years, anyway.

What about going 1 or 2 shades darker with the mocha in the family room then? That way the couch will not blend into the wall.

I wasn't very clear in the last post. Paint your family room the mocha color. Paint the long wall 1-2 shades deeper than the mocha. Use the camel colored couch.with the red pillows.

In a few years, if you get tired of the red pillows, change them out to sage, or navy ,or whatever and start all over!

I've tried with all different "neutral" shades, and the result is just "blah." They've also got a cactus-colored couch (kinda of dark mossy green), and we thought about that with the mocha walls, but again, everything seemed to just all blend together. It didn't look bad - it just didn't pop like I want it to.

Obviously, the house building is back on. ;) We sat down and had a long heart-to-heart about moving, job change, etc. After really looking into the job he thought he wanted, the money really wouldn't be there - which would mean me going back to work in more than teaching to make up the difference, which he doesn't want me to do. So, we're staying and just praying for the best.

Besides, even if we moved, we'd still build this same floor plan. I worked on it too long to just scrap it.

That's good! I know that you were so upset about moving--sometimes it's hard to look at the whole picture and decide what to do. Glad it's working out. And go for that red couch if that's what you like!

I find that I have to reupholster my family room couch every few years, so go with the color you want NOW.

I did 2 rooms in my last house. Ugh, it drove me nuts. Anytime something moved up against it, off came the color.....ugh!!!
We even did the gray primer underneath so it was done right.
I would hesitate to do that color in a family room.

Okay - all of you something else people - what's the something else? I'm open to ideas here.

I have a red couch and love it! We have neutral walls and cream colored chairs that just get lost, but the red couch looks great. (We may paint one wall darker to make the cream chairs look better).

Don't worry about what the couch will look like in ten years - who knows if the couch will make it that long! ;) Besides, ask me about keeping cream colored chairs clean - You might have trouble with a camel colored couch.

Good luck! :)

I'd do the mocha walls in the family room with the red couch. I like the mocha top/red bottom in the dining room...the dining room is not used as much, so a red bottom would probably be OK, plus it would tie the two rooms together somewhat visually.

I would use the red as an accent color. The red in the brick of the fireplace will pick up the red couch. Toss a few mocha/red print pillows on the couch, and you'll pull it all together. I think red next to the fireplace will not make it pop...I think it'll make it disappear.

Will the red fireplace and the red couch clash? You should get a brick sample and a fabric sample and make sure. If one is a pinky red and one is an orange/red, it won't look good.

I think a mocha couch with walls a few shades darker is a very sophisticated look. Be careful with the solid red accents with a red fireplace. I'd add some black as well with just a few touches of red in the same shade as the fireplace. A little bit of pattern with some golds and greens with the red might be a better idea.

I would think the brick would probably be a little darker, but I guess we'll just have to choose the brick for the fireplace based on the couch.

Check that out before you order the couch as it might not be possible. It isn't the darkness but instead the tones that are important.

Changing the fireplace to beige stone might be an option to consider. That way the red couch with definitely go!
