I know that little girls wear costumes (princess dresses) to many meals. So would it be acceptable for a boy to wear a Jack Sparrow costume to dinner? (I am thinking my 5 year old will want to be wearing this when we go to dinner our first night at Cape May)

Kids can wear their costumes in any park and any restaurant at WDW. My husband ate in full pirate gear at The Crystal Palace last time we were there before we went to MNSSHP. I was in a Minnie Mouse costume. No one is going to look twice at your little boy being in a pirate costume.

It's WDW so no one will say anything but he will almost certainly be the only one especially since it's not a character meal. That meal in particular we didn't see that many kids even. Will he be self concious if he is the only one? We really didn't see as many dressed up kids just around as we have in the past except at specific princess meals. I did see one girl in a see through princess nightie at Splash Mtn (yikes)! Lots of BBb hairdos but less dressed up kids. Only saw 1 pirate all decked out after a makeover and he was having his photo session. This was 2 weeks ago.

Sure that would be fine, especially since that is a Disney costume.
But just to warn you, people don't usually wear costumes to Cape May.
But it would be just fine. Are you going in Sept? It could just look like you are going to Mickey Halloween Party after.
Whenever you are going, it would be fine. I just don't want your son to feel out of place.
Have a great time. You all will love it.

Not the norm, but certainly acceptable!

ETA: Don't think that him wanting to wear his costume in Disney will get funny looks! There just won't be a ton of people doing it at Cape May dinner, since it's not a character meal. But let him go for it!

Maybe I'll see if I can just talk him into a walk around the resort and change for dinner.

OP, let your 5 year old son wear that pirate costume where ever he wants, let him enjoy every minute of it, take a ton of pictures, have an awesome time and don't give it another thought.

There will be boys and girls all over WDW dressed as pirates and don't think for one minute your little boy will feel out of place. If anything the characters will probably make a bigger fuss over him. My son, who is going on 12, wore a pirate costume one night when we ate at CRT, he was 6 at the time and LOVED being a pirate. I look back at those pictures now with such love for that little boy that is now so big. Childhood is fleeting, embrace it every chance you get!!!!!!

I totally agree! My son is 15 and I still think back on his last MNSSHP party when he was Jack Sparrow (he was 11) - he cracked me up walking around like Jack, talking like him.. Just too funny and a memory I will always have. Enjoy every moment!

Don't forget they offer packages at the Pirate League now. So don't be surprised if you see more pirates wandering around. They aren't full costumes, but still a lot of fun.

1) No problem !!!
2) Let the boys have fun !!!
3) Just remember, eating peas with a sword is tough.

We saw pirates everywhere last week, I would say go for it. I do agree it's because of the new pirate experience - it was a common sight.

My daughter was in pirate gear during our reservation at California Grill and they were really nice to her. The waiter even brought her a special pirate cake that the pastry chef made for our daughter. It was fun. We had seen kids dress in different restaurants. pirate:

People will likely tell him how cool he looks. I wouldn't worry about being made uncomfortable, he won't be. People will be in the spirit.

When I went when my son was younger(6 but now he's 9) he had a costum for almost every day. Kids are kids, where elso could he wear a costume and no one care?
