We are going to Hawaii next month and I read that buying a costco membership is worth the money. Can you tell me- are they a warehouse shop like Sam's club, where everything is sold in huge quantities? Do they give out 1 day free trail memberships? Thanks

Yes, Costco is like Sam's. I do not know if they do one day passes. You should be able to go online, find the phone number, and call the warehouse on the island you are going to in order to ask about the passes.

Yes, you will save money if you plan to grocery shop (are you staying in a condo or house?), buy gas, or souvenirs. On Kauai, where we go, it is also one of the few true fast food places;)

Thanks for the advice. we are going to Oahu for 1 week then Kauai for 1 week

If you just want to check it out you can go to customer service and ask to look around...no charge for that.

And FYI they have a 100% non-prorated membership cancellation policy. If at any time you're not happy with your membership for any reason you can cancel and they will refund your full membership fee.

That's awesome! thanks -I am going to go ahead and sign up

We are huge Costco fan. We have been to Maui 2 times in the past year. The first thing we do when we land is shop at Costco. Groceries are really expensive in Hawaii... so you will save a lot by being able to buy at Costco.

It was a trip to Oahu that started our Costco membership! In one trip, it pretty much paid for itself for a year. We bought gas, snacks, sodas, beach towels and dinner. Even though we didn't finish our 24 cans of juice, we gave them to a family checking in as we were checking out. It was still cheaper than buying at regular Hawaii prices.

Since then, we've made regular stops at other Costcos while on vacation. There's one in St. George, UT if I remember right which is very handy for the Zion National Park, Bryce National Park, Grand Canyon National Park trip. There's one in Billings, MT which we hit before driving into Yellowstone. (Note: if you plan on going through high elevations like the Beartooth Pass into Yellowstone, skip the ranch dip in the veggie platter. The elevation change caused the container to leak.) There's a couple Costcos in Orlando and we've gone to one a several times.

And when we've taken road trips, I try to see if there's a Costco on our way. They're frequently near the highway, have inexpensive gas, the food court while not great does have OK food and more ice for the cooler.

On O'ahu there are several Costcos, one is on the way from the airport to Waikiki. It has gas too, and an outdoor food place (most are inside) so anyone can buy pizza, etc from there.

Kauai has a Costco but I'm not sure where, haven't been there, only to Big Island and Maui.

Costco does not do trial or 1 day memberships, but they do, like someone mentioned, let you cancel at anytime and get your money back. Personally, I love Costco. They have lots of premade and prepared foods in the "deli" area that are totally worth it while on vacation, plus bottled waters, snacks, sodas, their pizza is $10 and huge!

Enjoy O'ahu, wave to me as you arrive at the airport LOL, I can see the planes land and take off from my house. :) Oh and FYI if you were planning on hitting the USS Missouri it is in the shipyards and unable to be seen but you can of course still see the USS Arizona Memorial (free) and the USS Bowfin. (not free)

We spent 2 weeks in Hawaii for our honeymoon this past June and we went to both Costco and Sams Club while on the islands. Saved lots of money on food for the condo we rented and on souvineers. They have loads of souvineer type foods like chocolate covered macadamia nuts and macadamia Hershey's Kisses (which you can only buy in HI).

Have a great time over there!!

I've never been to Hawaii, but we did all our shopping in Cabo San Lucas at Costco! I bet we were in there at least 4 times. Plus in a place like that, it's much more familiar than the local grocery stores.

We joined Costco for a year when we went to Hawaii a few years ago. The savings in gas alone was worth the annual membership. They will actually let you keep the membership for two weeks or whatever and then give you a refund. I can't remember if it's prorated, but that didn't really seem fair to me since we used it so much, so we kept it for the whole year. We used it in other cities a time or two during the year. (Oops! Should have read the other responses. Sorry to be repetitive.)

They told us the same thing when we went to Great Britain. Join and then get a refund when you get home. It turned out the stores there weren't convenient to our locations, so we didn't join for that.

Sure wish we'd get them locally. I like them much better than Sams.
