I received a dvd player in the mail as a gift from Costco, I would like to return it. I am not a Costco member any one know if I can bring it to a local Costco? My sister gave it to me and trying to explain to her why I do not want this model will be too much of a headache. TIA:goodvibes

You can try, tell them it was a Christmas gift and you would like to return it. They may say no, not with out a receipt. Then you will have to call your sis and ask for her to send it to you.

Thanks for the reply, I was not sure if I can get to customer service in the store not being a member. My sister bought the dvd player for her inlaws and when she realized it was not netflix ready, I got it instead. I told her that was fine I'll use it. But I prefer netflix ready too, lol. I figured I would get the same brand and with netflix and she would be none the wiser.:rotfl:

Yes, you can get in to customer service without being a member. But they will ask you for your "membership card" when you go to make your return. Then I'm sure they can return it to your sister's membership.

The problem is that they'll do one of two things...either refund it to your sister's account (because they keep track of how she paid, so if it was a credit card they'll do a refund to it, if it was a cash/check transaction they'll give you a store credit. Problem with a store credit, you have to have a membership to actually SHOP there. You can wander through and look around without a membership, but at the register a membership is required to purchase. Now, you could get around that by looking around to see what you want and then find a co-worker/friend willing to go in with you and make the purchase.

You might see if any other store carries that exact brand/model (not as easy on electronics because a lot of manufacturers renumber models for specific stores...makes that "price match" thing not work, lol). But...if you find one that has the exact same, then try returning it there....at this time of year lots of people don't know where the unwanted gift comes from and will return it where they can.....usually no receipt means a store credit so most places are fine with that because they'll get to keep the money anyway as you buy something else. Of course, you'll end up with their lowest selling price (usually within the last 90 days), but since you didn't pay you aren't out the money really, so long as you can find what you want it's all good, right?

Or...you could outright lie and tell her that it's defective and you need the receipt to exchange it and instead return it. At least then you don't have to explain why you want a better model, lol.

Thanks everyone for the replies, I really do appreicate it. I am going to give the player to our other sister, she does not even own a regular player so she said she said will be happy to take it off my hands,;).

I do appreciate the answers and I figure I'll get a netflix ready after the holidays. Merry Christmas!:santa:

Costco is usually great about returns/exchanges. Since you are not a member, you will have to go through the exit to the returns desk. Explain the situation, they may give you a Costco Cash card and a temporary shopping pass so that you can exchange the gift.

Just FYI for anyone who wants to shop at Costco without being a member--if you have a Costco gift card (which presumably someone who is a member bought for you), you don't need a membership. At least it was that way a year ago. My parents kept a stash of them so any of their kids who didn't want to buy a membership could still buy gas or shop there. I bet they'd give a temporary pass for someone making a return, too.
