Costa mesa?

Help....flying late at night into long beach... Have been trying to find an inexpensive place just for 1 night before heading to San Diego...holiday inn long beach is 275! Costa Mesa looks like a reasonable distance...is it safe? Any hotel recommendations? Don't want to spend too much since leaving in am but I am on vaca!

Costa Mesa is safe and the drive should take 20-30 minutes late at night. Have fun on your trip!

I've stayed at the Holiday Inn La Mirada many times. Nice hotel, safe area, there is also a restaurant on site. There's several other restaurants right across the street from the hotel as well. It's about 16 miles from Long Beach's airport to the hotel, and I think it's about 10 minutes closer from Long Beach than Costa Mesa. The hotel is right off of I-5 so easy access to hop back on the next morning and head to San Diego.

Costa Mesa is very near John Wayne Airport (SNA). There are many hotels with good rates around the airport. It is a safe area with good freeway access. Look on TripAdvisor for SNA and surrounding hotels for info and good deals. (You might want to do this for Long Beach airport as well, just to see if you can find a good deal that will save you a drive north before heading south the next day.)

Not sure if this is too late. But the Crowne Plaza in Costa Mesa is quite nice. It's on Bristol, right at the 405. I stayed there over Labor Day weekend and got a room for about $110/night. Their rates are quite a bit higher during the week.

The Marriott Ctyd on Sth. Harbor is nice and reasonably priced. Free parking and in a very quite area. Right off the 405. I personally would not stay at any hotel on Newport Blvd. Born and raised in the city and most of the them are "Hooker/ Drug" hotels. Hotels near John Wayne airport are also nice or you could drive a little bit more and go to Laguna Hills.
