Just wondering if anyone knows whether a cost of $2100 sounds reasonable to replace the power steering pump and rack on a 2008 Camry. I'll just be over here looking for a second job. :(

Sadly, yes. The steering rack looks like it sells for $600. The power steering pump is about $325. You'll need a front end alignment when the job is done, so that adds about $125. Throw in labor $2,100 is completely within what I would expect the job to cost. But doing almost any repair these days on a car can easily run a couple thousand dollars. And such a repair on a 15 year old car is not unexpected.

Sounds high, but the last time I had to do that was in around 2017 on a 2007 Honda CR-V. It was just the pump though, I *think.*. It was about $1200.

Thanks for this detailed analysis! And yeah - honestly, it's been a great car. We bought it used in 2017 or so and this is the first major repair we've ever had to do to it. (Knock wood.)

Yeah, unfortunately the pump is the cheaper part of the repair required, apparently. :/

I might be mistaken. I remember my power steering pump failed completely and it had apparently been a known issue, but my car was way out of warranty and there was no recall issued. I think they may have replaced the whole system (pump and rack) and wrote off part of the cost when they saw the service bulletin on the pump. So maybe that is why it wasn't more expensive.

While the pump is attached to the steering rack, they are two different systems and one failing would not be a reason to replace the other also.

Btw since your car is the 2008 Camry, you should be able to find aftermarket parts that are almost as good as OEM which should save you additional money. Just make sure to do your research and by from a reputable brand.

The prices I quoted are aftermarket.

I had a 2008 Toyota sienna that needed a new power steering pump. My Toyota dealership quoted me $2000 for just the power steering - in 2013. So your price sounds reasonable.

We decided to just trade the car in on a Honda.
