Cost for taxicabs around WDW

I was considering renting a car, but figure that the car usually sits in the parking lot most of the time. I will only be there for five nights, leaving early on the sixth day. Cost for the rental was going to be $250.

I was thinking that I could spend less by taking a cab a few times and the Mears shuttle.

How much are cabs around the World. Say from Boardwalk to WL? Or Boardwalk to Contemporary?

Any ideas?

Just trying to save a little cash, and have less hassle. I tend to think of the whole auto rental as a hassle.

Since we will be staying at the BW, I plan to walk to Epcot and MGM, and take the connecting monorails from Epcot to the MK.

BW to Contemporary ran us $11 plus tip as of October.

Seems, then, that it might be more cost effective to just take cabs the few times that I will need them, rather than renting the car.

I will plan to take Mears roundtrip from the airport. Even if I took a really long cab ride at $20 including tip, I would need to take ten of them (plus the Mears) to equal the cost of the car.

Good, then.

We came to the same conclusion.

Cab fare anywhere was never more than $15 from the BW. We took a towncar ($90 plus tip rt), and dropped possibly as much as $200 on cab fare over seven days. So we were at $290 for transportation costs.

I know I can get a cheap rental for less than that. I know my husband won't drive a cheap rental. And I know I'll spend time looking for a good price on a full sized car. So we are looking at a good full sized rental (which he will still complain about because he is a car snob, and it isn't exactly cost effective to rent a Volvo). By the time we add tax, gas and tolls - plus a surcharge for my time in trying to deal with the hassle of a rental -taxis are a bargain

One suggestion that I have... If you have 3 or more people, it might be more cost effective (and convenient) to reserve a Towncar instead of the Mears Shuttle. They typically can run $90+tip, which is around the same that a Mears Shuttle for 3 would run. They're direct, private, and easier.

Thanks all. Thanks Chip 'n Dale. I checked the Tiffany's website. It will be just DD (6) and myself, so it will be less this time to go Mears.

I just want a hassle free experience, so no car rental hassle. It adds another hour, I think, to the time it takes to actually get to and from the airport. Takes time away from my vacation.

I usually don't bring much cash, just enough for tips, So I'll have to remember to bring cash this time.

Mears can also add time to your trip. The only time I took Mears, it took nearly two hours to get from picking up our bags to the hotel. We had to wait for the shuttle to fill, then drive to what seemed like a zillion hotels before we were let off last. So if you are willing to pay to avoid the hassle, a towncar may be a better deal.

Bring cash for the cabs - and bring your own "change" Hand a driver a twenty for a $12 fare, and some of them seem offended if you want change back and aren't going to give them an $8 tip. Easier to hand them $14 or $15 dollars. (Some of them do the slick thing of pocketing your twenty and "not understanding" or "not hearing" your request for change, hoping you will just let it be. I've never not gotten the change I've requested, but at times the interaction has been a hassle.)

Also, ask before you get in the cab what the "approximate" fare will be. Some drivers like to take the long way around to jack up the fare. If the approximate fare sounds high, take a different cab. If you know Disney well enough to know if they are taking you for a ride, get the cab drivers name if he does so and call it in. Checker is the offical cab company on property (owned by Mears) and don't want too many people complaining to Disney about their service.

I learned that lesson the hard way after a taxi driver tried taking us to the wrong hotel  Now, I always ask how much and I make sure he/she knows where I want to go :p

Thanks Crisi. All things I didn't really think of. I will get a map from bell services before I ask for the cab. That way I can review the route before I get in the cab.

I will bring lots of small bills.

How much do you tip cab drivers?

I'm not sure about other resorts, but I was at All-Star Music the other day, and they had a sheet listing approximate cab fares for the local area. I'd imagine each Porte Cochere location should have a sheet like this.

This is such good info. Although staying on-site, we still need to get to Mass on Sunday (or Saturday night) and we are going to need to go somewhere to get my son's blood drawn every few days. I think we're going to go with a cab too. Car rental rates are so high and the car will just sit most of the time anyway!:sunny:

I was trying to figure this out about a month ago. Things have changed. Just for laughs, I checked the Avis website. The price for the same rental went down $100!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I will now have an intermediate rental with a coupon and a code for $150 for six days!!!!!!!!!!

Yippee!!!!!
