Cosmetics in checked luggage

I read through the TSA packing recs and I just want to double check. I can put a small train case with cosmetics and moisturizers in my checked luggage. I only have to worry about 3-1-1 if it's in a carry-on. Right?

Yes you are correct. I pack my normal size shampoo, stink guard, hair spray etc in my suitcase.

New question- can you pack snacks in your carry-on or personal bag? I'd like to pack Nutrigrain, fruit snacks, or other little snacks for our family. Maybe PB&J for the kids as we have a quick layover around lunchtime.

I would guess they'd need to go in the 3-1-1 bag. That doesn't mean you can't put them in your purse after you get through security.

Not the lip balm...if it's the waxy stick variety. If it's a jelly type balm, then yes, it needs to be in the 3-1-1 bag.

Lotion - definitely in the 3-1-1.

Lunch and snacks are fine! We usually travel with LOTS of food (keeps DD3 busy and happy). Things like yogurt and apple sauce don't usually make it past security (unless you have an infant) but anything you mentioned will be fine (the PB&J could be a problem on the flight if you end up on a peanut free flight but security won't have any problem with it).

I also refrain from bringing any peanut products on the flight; it could effect not only the current flight you are on, but the next flight if peanut residue gets on the tray table and cannot be wiped down in time for the next flight.

You need to be cognizant of anything that could cause a severe allergic reaction to another traveler on the plane.

Since lotion is liquid, it needs to go in the 3-1-1 bag or in checked baggage.

Lip balm must be the waxed based kind; anything else is a liquid/gel and is not compliant unless it is in the 3-1-1.

You should be fine with those. I bring PB&J or Nutrigrain frequently on flights, not a problem.

Thanks everyone! This is my first time flying in 8 years and first time with kids.

The basic rule of thumb is that anything that holds its shape outside of the container at room temperature is fine. Anything that doesn't is a liquid. So lipstick is fine, but lipgloss needs to go in the 3-1-1 bag.

There is one caveat with foods - liquid condiments like peanut butter, cream cheese, mayonnaise, ketchup, etc. need to go in the 3-1-1 bag is they're in containers, but they're fine if they're already on a sandwich.
