Cortizone Shots

After suffering for a few years and not having a clue what the problem was, I finally went to a podiatrist who diagnosed plantar fasciitis. At my first visit, he wrapped my foot to see if I would get any relief with the extra support. I had tried every shoe insert I could find and was very surprised to see how good a little moleskin and tape made my foot feel. At my second visit he suggested orthotics and measured/fitted me for them.
I have been pain free since wearing the orthotics. I wear them in both shoes even though only one foot is affected..for balance, I guess.

I leave in 4 hours to get cortisone shots in each foot. I am very NERVOUS :scared1: I am also praying that this helps me and gets me through Disney and then when I get home restart the PT and well be on my way to having healthier feet. I walked in a parade on SAturday and thought my feet were on fire, so then I decided the shots are a must for Disney...Don't get me wrong I walked and I did again on Sunday but if there is a chance that my feet won't hurt as bad then I am gonna try it. Send all yuor positive thoughts my way. The things I do for that mouse.:wizard:

Ok I am back from getting the shots and I SURVIVED...It wasen't nearly as bad as I thought it would be...I have had in thepast an ingrown toe nail and they had to give 3 shots in the toe and that had hurt ALOT more...Now let's keep pur fingers crossed that this will work, because I want to be pain free to see Mickey Mouse on Thursday...Thnaks to all my fellow posters who offered encouragement and advice.

Good luck and I hope you have a pain-free vacation.

I too have this issue, as well as another foot issue. Think I'm going to have to bite the bullet and get orthodics before my trip -- 1 month from today.

DId you ever get the shots? HONESTLY they weren't as bad as everyone had said. I do handle pain pretty good, I just get quiet and to be honest I just kept thinking about the big picture DISNEY and all that walking. RIght now my left foot is sore, and my right one is just a tad, I am praying that this takes. I also got custom made orthotics and do as early as you can. My podiatrist put a rush on them and it did take 2 weeks to get in and breaking them in is well a bit to get used to. I also have heel spurs. I am extrmely flat footed and I overpronate, so I have a pair of Brooks Ariel and New Balance 1012 I believe they hava maximum control in the, , you might want to try getting a shoe with maimum control, it HELPS...Thank you for the well wishes:love: I hope thing look up for you also....

Well, I bit the bullet and called my podiatrist. I saw one last year before my Disney trip, who gave me a pain pill which helped tremendously. It was too hard to get in to see him, so I went to this new person in October. He also mentioned orthodics but first I wanted an ingrown toenail taken care of. We did and I never went back. :sad2: Of course, now I'm panicking because of my upcoming trip. I've bought 3-4 different pairs of sneakers/walking shoes and nothing is helping. Hopefully I can get my orthodics and possibly a prescription before my trip. If not, I'll deal with the pain 'cause nothing is going to stop me. :dance3:

I have to tell you this I have had 3 ingrown toe nails where I had to get the shots beofre and that was way WORSE than the cortisone injections. Try SuperFeet orthotics that is what I used before I got my custom ones. They sell them on line I bought the green ones and it turns out thats the one my podiatrist also recommended. If you have any high end shoes specialty stores by you they might also have them, they did by me. If you get a prescription try for steroids that will get the inflammation down. GOOD LUCK...Mine are a little sore today but seem ok so I am still keeping my fingers crossed...:thumbsup2

Hi OP - I had one heck of a heel spur (along with flat feet and pronation) that really started bothering me about 2 months before our Disney vacation last November. After seeing a podiatrist - she started 'getting me ready' for all the walking of our trip, which included stretching exercises, orthotics, and 3 cortisone injections. She was more aggressive than a lot of podiatrists and told me so, so I was lucky enough to get in all 3 shots before our trip. After the first shot - it was sore for the rest of the day, and fine after that. I had relief for about 2 weeks, then the pain came back. Second shot - the relief lasted longer - about a month, but the pain came back. Third shot - the one right before our trip - did the trick once and for all. I've not had any heel pain since then. I spend my life barefoot - the doctor told me to wear shoes as often as possible. I just can't bring myself to wear shoes all day long - so I got some Naot sandals (expensive but well worth it) and they're wonderful for my feet - so comfortable, and I can wear my orthotics in them as well. Good luck to you!

SO you had 3 injections in a 2 month span? WOW... I was hoping this one shot would last for about a month. When your pain came back was it as intense as before? Or did it start out mildly then move to yucky? I am just like you I LOVE to be barefoot! That is probably what got me in this trouble in the first place. I own NAot's also. Actually before all this cam e on all I wore were Merrells, Naots, and CLarks, and Brooks Ariel gym shoes, so why this happened still boggles my mind. How long has it been since your last injection?

For all those oput there who had injections, how long of relief did you get after just one injection???This really has peaked my interest...:thumbsup2

Well let's see - we left for our trip on Oct 29th, so I probably had my last injection around the 25th or so. That was the end of my heel spur pain. I love my podiatrist - she was admittedly aggressive with treatment, her partner wouldn't have given me 3 shots in that time span. I also took 800mg ibuprofen - probably once or twice a day on bad days. When the pain came back, it was less intense than before - but I still had to hobble around when I got out of bed in the morning. It was just back one morning - no gradual leading up to it - I went to bed the night before with no pain, and I woke up with the pain back. My doctor did ask me to note when my pain was the worst - and it was while I was cooking (barefoot) in our tile kitchen. She said that was one of the worst surfaces, and recommended I get a gel mat for in front of the stove and sink. Good luck to you! Oh - the relief from my first injection lasted around 2 weeks - maybe 3 - as soon as it wore off, I was scheduled for my second injection.

Well went to to the pod. today. Did the imprints for the orthodics. Said they should be in in about 3-4 weeks. Hopefully before my trip in 4 weeks. Also recommended I go for PT -- water, electrode and stretching therapy. Now call me skeptical, but he happens to share offices with a PT. Anyway, with just 4 weeks before vacation, I'll give it a try. Anyone have any stories to share re PT?

jenmouse - hope the shots work well for you. I was able to really stretch my shots out, but I think that they lasted about 3 months or so. Even then I didn't run and get another right away. I believe I lasted about 7 months. As far as PT goes, I began sometime after my second injection. In addition to the massaging and an ultrasound like therapy, there was lots of stretching. Two of the exercises they had me do were to pick up marbles with my toes and to scrunch a towel with my toes. Strengthening the muscles in your toes helps a lot. I still do these exercises when it begins to hurt again. I also had the brace thing to wear at night which I found way too uncomfortable. While the injections worked well for me to provide temporary relief, I really credit the PT in helping me be pain free. Hope you have a wonderful trip! (We arrive Sunday at BLT!)

3 days. Just saw the pod today and he's starting me on steroids and PT. We'll see what happens.

Thanks for discussing the PT. Glad it worked for you. :thumbsup2

Well I leave in about 12 hours to the airport...I am tired, overpacked, yet again, and am PRAYING my feet hold up...I have had different aches in them not to bad, BUT the doctor told me I should've taken it easy on them yesterday and well I tried, but I could've done better. You know since all this started my feet NEVER hurt in the morning, they hurt at the end of the day mostly, like tired, well really tired, and the PF flares...SO please if all of you could wave some magic pixie dust my way so I make it pain free through this trip, I would so appreciate it. I did go to therapy tonight and I told hime he didn't need to wrap my feet they felt ok, which is definately a first for me in a while....Keep up on the writings it is so interesting to hear everyone take on this not so fun PF...Oh and can I say one thing, first time packing and not bringing one pair of cute shoes, only 3 of the largest bulkiest gym shoes, my that will look just dapper in my cute outfits. ALready told hubby no full length picture shots, ha.....Well its time for me to go to bed and get ready to see Mickey Mouse tomorrow, night all :cloud9:

Jemmouse hope you have a fantastic, magical, pain free vacation! pixiedust:pixiedust:pixiedust:

Well I am back and my feet held up.:cool1: Although I did break down on one day and rent a scooter at Epcot, they were somewhat sore and I was afraid of overdoing it. I will admit I felt bad and nervous about the ECV rental but after awhile of no pain I definately got over it. Maybe that one day of rest on my feet was what I needed because then I was fiine. I did take breaks and rub my feet and iced them everynight and took Advil around the clock. BUUUTT now guess what the throbbing did return, I managed to last a little over 2 weeks, tomorrow is therapy so hopefully now we will start with the stretches and see where that takes me....

Glad you made it through and were smart enough to get that ECV when you needed it! Good call. No sense ruining your vacation. Good luck with your continued therapy.

As I suspected, the PT that my doctor recommended, who he happens to share office space with, is not in my insurance plan, so I cancelled PT and also my doctor's appointment for today. No need to go back -- nothing has changed. I told them to call me when my orthodics come in and if I need to, I'll start PT when I get back from vacation.
