I have a heel spur and the treatment is therapy, wrapping my foot and cortisone injections in my foot. Last week, the doctor told me that he'd be as gentle as possible. While it didn't feel good, it was by no means unbearable.

Tonight I go in for my 2nd shot. Different doctor who jabbed the needle into the bottom of my foot. By no means was there any gentliness to the process -- it hurt like the dickens. So, here I am, 2 hours after the fact, limping around and in a lot of pain. My foot feels tingly and really sore. I didn't have this type of a reaction last week.

I wondering whether or not it was the two different doctor's approach to the injection which is causing me all the discomfort. I still have 2 more weeks of these to go and I am definately not looking forward to another injection.

Can anyone shed any light on this? If it was the approach, I certainly don't want to go back to the same doctor I saw tonight. Thanks for any help.

Cindy

Every so often I need to get this for my shoulder. The doctor finds the "hot spot" and so far, the shot hasn't been bad and lasts for a long time.

I remember my Mom getting cortisone shots, and one time the doctor hit a bone. She felt the same way that you do. The shot caused more pain than the ailment.

I hope that you're feeling better by tomorrow.

Wow, can I relate???!!!!! Yes, I too had heel spurs and had injections over a period of time. In addition to the injections (I think 2 or 3 altogether), I also had ultrasound therapy approximately 6-8 times. The first time I had the injection, it hurt a little. The second time (which by concidence was with a different doctor also) hurt like HE**. I literally screamed in pain and was in tears. I must say, however, that I had gone in with such pain that I couldn't even walk. When he injected the needle, he must've hit the exact spot where the pain was and I saw stars. I also had orthotics made for my shoes. Now, several months later I can't believe the difference in my foot and am 99.99% pain free. Good luck!

I went through that in 2000. It's no fun. :( I did get one cortisone shot and it was not too bad. I was so worried about the shot that I put off going to the Dr. for about 9 months and suffered with extreme pain.

Did your Dr. tell you to never go barefoot? That was the single most important part of my recovery. Always having good arch support. Don't ever wear any shoes without arch support or an orthotic. Every time you stand up barefoot, the ligaments tear again and never get a chance to heal.

I got a good pair of athletic shoes. The Dr. suggested going to a store that specializes in running shoes instead of one of the big chains. The specialty stores are more likely to have knowledgeable people who can help you find a shoe with good arch support.

I also got some Birkenstock sandals to wear around the house. They have great arch support and the cork bed molds to your foot. I put them on before I stand up when I first get out of bed. There is an outlet in the Belz outlet mall if you get to Orlando anytime soon. :) The Dr. gave me some special orthotics to wear in my other shoes. I even used them in my water shoes when I took a shower. I literally did not step barefoot for over 6 months.

Today I am totally pain free. I still wear my sandals all of the time. If I go barefoot for even 5 minutes, I can feel the stretch in my foot and quickly put my sandals back on.

I hope the shots help and you heal quickly. :)

I just had my 3rd shot on Monday! I thought I was the only one suffering & limping around with 3 heel spurs!

I don't think you should have felt that much pain. I wonder if he could have tagged a nerve? If you don't feel better by tomorrow, I'd call the doctor again! That's horrible! My doctor is great how he does the shot. He uses that spray that feels ice cold before he pokes me. I can barely feel him giving me the shot.

This doctor I am currently going too, healed me once before. I had the same problem back in '99 & my feet have been fine until a couple months ago, it seems like I just woke up with pain. I'm still pretty miserable but am hoping that as long as I follow all his instructions (again) that this pain will only be a bad memory! Hope the same for you too! Good luck!

I used to get shots when my gout flared up. Even though this affected my feet, I got the shot in the arm or butt and the pain in my foot was gone in about a half hour. It's important to drink a lot of water following the shot.

I guess I was lucky with the heel spur. Dr. gave me some anti-inflammatory pills and some advice (like getting shoes with good support) and I never had the problem again. I also have gout occasionally, but just take the pills and stay off the foot for a day and I'm better. The thought of a needle in my foot (I have a phobia) makes me weak in the knees.
