My b/f(who has Cerebral Palsy in a power wheelchair) and I are thinking about changing our reservations to Coronado Springs in November and I was hoping I could ask you a couple of questions.

1) Which building is closest to the restaurants and a bus stop? I ask this because he is very skinny and gets cold very easily. I don't want him to have to go far to a room if it starts raining.

2) Do you know if there are handicap assessible rooms with a roll in shower and a king sized bed at all the buildings?

We have been to POR and POFQ, I would rather do FQ again but he wants to try something different.

Any thoughts on CSR? I am asking here because I want perspectives of people with disabilities and/or their families.

Hi!
I am a wheelchair user (Spina Bifida) and my wife and I are going on our honeymoon and staying at CSR.

Yes their are handicapped rooms with roll in showers and king sized beds in ALL sections (Casitas, Rancheros and Cabanas). You MUST make sure you request a "roll in shower and king size bed" room specifically as they have different "types" of handicapp accessable rooms and you want the right one for you and your sweetie.
If you use the "Search " on these boads and go to almost any thread on CSR you'll find a reply from a man named "
buzz" he has an VERY exenstive website on CSR complete with amazing photos and specific buildings and room locations that fit exactly what you need.

Have a great time!

1) Which building is closest to the restaurants and a bus stop? I ask this because he is very skinny and gets cold very easily. I don't want him to have to go far to a room if it starts raining. Casita 1 is attached to the main building and is close to both restaurants.

2) Do you know if there are handicap assessible rooms with a roll in shower and a king sized bed at all the buildings? Most of the 124 king rooms are HA is some manner. And yes, some do have the roll ub shower.

In case you haven't seen it, here's a map so you can get the lie of the land:
http://www.wdwinfo.com/resortmaps/cspringsmap.htm
You can also just request a HA room near the main buildings, rather than a certain area, if you'd prefer.

One thing, completely unrelated to accessibility, but that you might want to be aware of, is that the restaurant is run under a different system to most. You are seated by a CM who also takes your drinks orders, but then you go to the counter service locations to get your food. A lot of people like this system, but I thought you could do with a heads-up before you got there, so you know what to expect. Oh, and you also pay service on the whole meal, not just the drinks.

All in all, I think you'll like the resort and as it's a new (ish) build, the accessibility around and about should be no problem.

Have a great time :thumbsup2 !

Cabanas (eek! Can't remember what the section is called!! It's the first one across the bridge from El Centro!) is very close as well. I would recommend it as well as Casitas 1.

I think you got it right (Cabanas).

I second the 'look at the map and get a lay of the land' idea.
We stayed at CS for one night in a room without a roll in shower. We were in the Ranchos area, I think in Building 7E. It was not as far from El Centro as it appears on the map, but for your purposes, Casitas 1 would be ideal and Cabanas 9 would also be close.
Some of the resorts have "preferred" locations that you need to pay extra for because they are in high demand. I don't know if the Casitas and Cabanas are preferred locations, but I'm sure someone will post and let you know that.

I had not thought about the arrangement of the food court, but it was kind of a shock to us.

Thank you all so much for taking the time to reply.

My b/f called the special requests number about CSR today. He was told both the Casitas and Cabanas were going to be rehabbed during the time in November we wanted to go. We moved the reservations to POFQ. We went there in Feb. 2006 and liked it, b/f had just wanted to try a different resort.

I'm sure not all of those areas are going to be rehabbed all at the same time. We are going November 3-11 and have no intentions of moving our reservations. When are you going to be there? PM me! Meybe we will run into each other!

Just a suggestion, if you were looking to try somewhere new, I can't see Caribbean Beach on the list in your siggie. It's also a moderate, so should cost the same as the other places, and I think it's a nice resort. Do be warned, it's a fairly big place, so you might want to request a building up close. I'm afraid I can't comment on the access, as I've not been since I started using wheels.

Hope you have a wonderful trip, wherever you end up staying :goodvibes !

Unless things have changed, Caribbean Beach does not have a wheelchair pushplate to get into Old Port Royale) their food court and shopping building). I think regarding the concerns expressed by the OP that they will be happier at POFQ which is a much smaller resort. We stayed at Coronado once last year in an accessible king/roll in shower room in the Ranchos section. We couldn't have been further from the main building and food court there. It was in the summer and my poor service dog's paws were burned from having to stay on the pavement for that length of time to get to the front. If it had been raining we would not have been able to get to our room unless we took a bus to bring us around to that section. I do love the rooms at Coronado though and esp. the way their roll in shower is designed plus it's fun to try new places. It's unfortunate that all the resorts with outdoor buildings, which are the majority, don't at least have covered walkways but it would be an upkeep nightmare and also would spoil the theming. ---Kathy

When were you there last?
Our last trip (we didn't stay, just went for lunch and a look around) was a couple years ago and I could swear they had added pushplates.
I know they didn't used to have them because we stayed there many times in the past, but I thought they were added when the Old Port Royale building was renovated - seems like it wasn't that long ago, but I'm guessing it was probably 5 years or so ago.

Gosh- it's been probably 3 years since I've tried to access OPR at CBR which is why I wasn't sure if things had changed. I was really taken aback to see someone in an ECV struggling to open the door and realizing there was no pushplate. I did take the time to mention it to someone in the check in building that they needed this type of accessibility. One time I was entering POR and the pushplate itself was way too high ( it was mostly used by bell services) and behind a bench where it could not be reached by my service dog who tried desperately to hit it. I mentioned it to a CM inside as we were checking in. Lo and behold by the time we got out of the check in line, which wasn't that long, someone had come and moved it down and moved the bench away! I thought that was amazing service and response. Sometimes unless an issue is pointed out, no one will realize it's a problem. ---Kathy

If you did decide you wanted to stay in CBR, you could always ring the resort and ask. I'm sure they wouldn't mind checking it for you (you never know, they may even install one, if they haven't already).

I think we need someone to make a field trip to check it out!

I volunteer to go back.;)

Kathy made a good point about the locations of those buttons though. Since they are not 'important' to the majority of people, they forget that for some people, the button is the only way in.

Also the roll in showers at Coronado are the largest on property. You could have a party in them.
