Who do you think has done more for society?

I only ask because my company lowered their flags to half-mast last Wednesday through today for Coretta Scott King and put out a huge announcement about her contributions to the Civil Rights Movement, but refused to do the same for Betty Friedan and her contributions to the Women's Movement.

I know Betty Friedan was a controversial figure and not in the public spotlight in in recent years, so maybe that's why they refused. Just wondering what else I'm missing.

I know about her life. I grew up in the 60's. I am just wondering what you think her contributions are. The ERA was a goal of hers. It went no where. It wasn't needed.

If you know that much about her life, then you know that she, more than anyone else, brought out into the open that there were millions of women in this country that wanted more than husbands and kids and a house in the suburbs to take care of. She was one of the women that pushed open the front door and helped make it possible for women to have choices.

And if you know that much about her life, you also know that she later felt that the women's movement had strayed too far from it's origins, i.e., the movement moved from making sure that women were made aware of their choices to a movement that made men the enemy and told women that chose to stay home that they were traitors to their sex.

If you know that much about her, you know that she was about much, much more than just the ERA.

It's a shame that Betty Friedan wasn't recognized as she should have been. Dawn, this is not an attack on Bush but she should have been mentioned too.

Honestly, what's the point of pitting one against the other? In my mind, each was special in their own right.

I'm not trying to pit them against each other (probably had a poor choice of thread title).

I was just trying to understand my company's rationale for exulting one and not the other. I'm also not saying that Coretta didn't deserve the recognition she received from my company and the rest of country, just that Betty Friedan also deserved such recognition. Perhaps if we hadn't lost such two great women in the same week, it wouldn't have been obvious. But, because we did, my company's decision was more evident.

Heading to bed, not trying to escape the conversation. But my head is about to hit the keyboard.
