We have a DS with quite a severe seafood allergy. (He even starts reacting when petting rays, etc. in those pools they sometimes have at aquariums.) :scared1:

I'm wondering if anyone has either been to CR with a seafood/shellfish allergy person OR is anyone inquisitive enough that they have asked about food prep at the restaurant?

We can order accordingly BUT we have to be very careful with cross contamination including, for example, if the same oil is used for fries as for frying fish. Things like that....

Our eldest DS would love to eat here....we don't know about whether or not it's a risk. Any thoughts experts?

How severe? My mom is severely allergic to crab. It has gotten to the point if someone is preparing/eating crab 100 feet away from her, she'll break into hives. If your son reacts like that, I'd stay out of the restaurant entirely. Maybe DH can go to CR with one son and you can take the youngest elsewhere?

If you think you can prevent it with being careful with cross contamination, I'd make an ADR ASAP and then call the restaurant directly and talk with the chef. You can ask for the phone number when you make your ADR. The chef should know if it is possible to accomodate your son. I'm sure your kids would love it! We're going there just for the fishy entertainment; I have a slight seafood allergy (along with a few others :rolleyes1 ) but you can't beat watching fish swim by you! I figure I can avoid the stuff I can't eat and jsut take some extra benedryl LOL. :santa:

If his allergy is anything like my friends there will be no way to guarentee no cross contamination. Having seen one of her reactions I would say any chance is too big a risk.

Although I haven't had anyone with me at CR who had an allergy, the family at the next table did. Their young son (looked to be about 7 yo) was allergic to something, I don't know what. The chef came out and talked to them at great length about the food preparation. I don't know what he said, but I do know that after he left, the family was talking among themselves about how very impressed they were about the care that was being taken in dealing with the allergies. They sounded like a family that had lots of experience dealing with their son's allergies at different resturaunts. I remember thinking that it sounded like, if I ever had anyone in my party with allergies, Coral Reef was the place for us to go. Sorry this is just hearsay, but they were so impressed, I just wanted to share what I heard.

Thanks for your kind and helpful comments thus far.

His allergy is bad enough that he needs steroids rather than benadryl to conquer his hives. (As a side note we discovered it at, of all places, Cape Cod where we had sat down for a nice dinner of lobster, crab & scallops....he ended up with a swollen tongue, etc.)

I think we will at least make the ADR for February but I will make some calls in advance....sounds like the staff there would be helpful.:thumbsup2

We are planning on eating there our next trip. DS7 has severe food allergies too. Feel free to PM me in Dec. once we get back, and I'll let you know how it went.
