My Aunt lives in Florida and I was just talking to her about our upcomming trip........... she said she'd heard from a co-worker that a lot of people were getting sick from eating at Coral Reef? :confused3

Anyone else hearing this? We'd like to eat here............ but, if this is the case we might have to reconsider!!!

I'd be interested in finding out, too. Right now we have ADRs for Coral Reef and for Akershus - leaning more toward Akershus because of the characters, but not so sure about the food options there! But the menu at Coral Reef doesn't look all that spectacular, so I think we might cancer that ADR.

Well--it would undoubtedly have made the news if it were so.
Where's the evidence??

WOW - UMMM as stated, she said she heard it from a co-worker.......... SINCE I don't live in Fl. - I wouldn't have seen the local news.............

I'M asking here - cause I don't have any "EVIDENCE" - and was HOPING to hear from anyone else who might have "heard" this.............. sheesh!!!

Actually, the title of your thread is a STATEMENT--not a question.

And of course my question was a rhetorical one--by now all the local media (particularly the Sentinel) would be all over such a story were there any evidence that it was (or might even be) true. And it would be on these Boards in short order, you can be sure!!

Since it can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 6 weeks' :scared1: time to get sick from something you ate, it is really difficult to pinpoint where a person came into contact with a toxin, bacteria, or virus that made them ill.

One person getting sick is a "case" of Food Borne Illness.
An outbreak is a different matter- many cases.
Case in point- tomatoes, spinach, peanuts all contaminated either in field or at processors plants. Outbreaks get lots of press.

It is more likely to be a Norwalk or Norovirus, (60% of FBI IS norovirus related) which can be transmitted through food, but also through touching common things and not washing hands.

I would say that it is unlikely for this to be a poor food handling issue(restaurants are usually hyper-vigilant, well-trained, big on reputation and often checked), but likely to be an individual's hand-washing issue...

just my .02... for what it is worth ... :rolleyes1

I agree, I am sure someone would have found it in the Sentinel and posted on here by now.

REALLY????????????????

:lmao:

I feel like the OP has some ISSUE with my post.............. can you not just ask a question, without being asked for "evidence" - ??? I mean really, why would I be asking if I had "evidence"??

He didn't ask you to provide evidence. Re-read what he said, he asked a rhetorical question insinuating that if there was evidence of it that it would be well publicised by the media by now.

In effect, he was reassuring you that there was no truth to the rumour and you can enjoy your upcoming ADR.

Calm down, no one is out to get you ;)

If so it must be new. We had a wonderful meal there while visiting the first week of March (Mar. 6-12). We didn't get sick. We both had fish. We also ate there in January and again a great meal. We have an ADR there for next weekend when we arrive on April 24th and have no plans to cancel it. This is one of our favorite places to eat, esp. at lunch time when it's quiet and relaxing.

maybe they are not cleaning the fish tank enough, and some sort of fishy ailment got transmitted when someone ordered fresh fish?:lmao:

NO, absolutely not!

I don't think there's any need for anyone to cancel ADRs for the coming months based on this story. The aunt didn't get sick, the co-worker didn't say he/she got sick, but some mystery "lot of people" alledgedly got sick after eating at Coral Reef. Not worth panicking about. We dine there every trip and have never suffered an illness. It's a lovely restaurant. Germs abound at Disney. It's more likely you'll catch something touching everything everyone else touches, like ride bars, than the food.

The way people complain to Disney staff over even the smallest of inconveniences, I highly doubt that a possible trend of food poisoning coming from any of their restaurants would go unoticed, let alone unfixed, for more than a day or two.

I've eaten at the reastuarant several times, and I've always had a lovely meal devoid of intestinal parasites.

The thread will remain open at this time. The question is a valid one, which comes up from time to time on the boards.

It's also valid that someone ask the OP where they are getting their information from. It helps others who may be wondering the same thing when possibly reconsidering about their own reservations, and it also helps those answering in how to best answer this question.

Threads and topics aren't 'owned' by anyone once they're posted, and it's good to know if people are (or aren't) getting sick at certain restaurants. It helps prevent the spread of misinformation.

If this thread becomes a personal attack against anyone (to the OP or those replying to their question), moderators will have to issue warnings/infractions accordingly.

(Some argumentative posts have been removed, as well as replies that quoted the arguments - hopefully that helps get this thread 'back on track' :goodvibes: )

:lmao: That actually made me LOL.

FWIW...we've never had a problem either. It's one of our favorites!

I haven't heard anything and i'm not the least bit worried. looking forward to my meal in 21 short days! :cool1:

Sounds very much like hearsay. With the number of people on these boards and the number of people in WDW last week, I'd think for sure we'd have heard about this by now- with a first person account. Anyone eat there last week?

I'm thinking a friend of the coworker just started a rumor to keep their favorite restaurant from booking up ;) Ya know...didn't you hear about the cochroaches at Le Cellier? :rotfl:

II don't care, I'll still be eating there next week and it's my favorite restaurant! Along with 50's!
