Copy of Passport

is there any advantage/disadvantage to having a copy of our passports on our i phone vs a paper copy? In the past i've made a paper copy and kept it separate from my regular passport. This time i was thinking about having it on our i phones

Leave a copy on the ship. Keep a copy on your phone

What if the phone dies battery or otherwise. What if it gets stolen. That paper copy in your safe shall help

I keep an electronic copy in my Dropbox account. Accessible from any computer anywhere.

and unfortunately with DropBox - at least in the past - VERY Vulnerable to being hacked and your personal information not being so private anymore.

If you have your iPhone secured (password / encrypted) then you shouldn't worry about "losing" it - iPhones are pretty secure IF you take the time to secure them. Probably better than carrying a photocopy of you passport around with you.

A digital copy, ie on your phone, allows you to email it to the government in case you lose it. Otherwise, you might have to snail mail it, if there isn't a scanner available.

We keep copies in my parent's safe...we also take paper copies and put them in the ship's safe. We also have them saved in a PDF file in our email with no mention to the word "passport".

A copy of a passport has no legal value. The only value is if you lose your original it is a little easier to get a new passport. Same can be done if you simply record the passport number somewhere which is what I do. Either way, if you lose your passport they cancel the old one and issue a new passport/#.

You'd have to have a new (emergency) passport issued, if that's the only form of ID you have to return to the US.

But, as stated, simply having the old passport number will do the same as having a digital or actual photo copy of the missing passport.

If you feel you need to take a copy of something off the ship, take a copy of the port side contact/agent information that is found on your navigator at every port. If you are, for whatever reason, stuck at a port and cannot get back to the ship you need to contact them and they will assist you. They can contact the ship to get your real passport, clothes, etc and help you with whatever situation you are in. I always look at that info and wonder just how many people realize that it is their lifeline to the ship while onshore.
