Coordinated attacks on women in Germany

I wish you would reword the title. It is very misleading. How about something like " Coordinated attacks on Women in Germany"? The current wording makes it sound like government sanctioned attacks.

Minnie - I would but I don't know how. Help.
Just have your first post (upper right) there should be a Thread Tools, with a drop down menu. Click on edit title.

ETA looks like you found it before I finished posting.

I'm not sure if coordinated is the right word (at least I don't think anyone has claimed that this was an organized thing). I think simultaneous is better. What you have is a lot of women out for the night (it's new year's eve) and a lot of middle eastern men who have never been exposed to that much female flesh and view that as an invitation. I don't know who's surprised that after letting in thousands upon thousands of young, single, differently socialized males, this happened.

NPR used the word 'coordinated'

I like how one official pretty much excused the incident, citing different culture, and said something to the effect of "we will inform the men of what is acceptable behavior for the upcoming Carnival season." :sad2: A little late for that, dontcha think?

That is the excuse used here in the US when one of my daughters had to seek separation from a lab where a fellow grad student was sexually harassing her. This individual had a history of harassing several other females. The very feeble excuse used by this guy and the university was that he came from another culture where it was normal to treat females that way. They expected the female students to understand.

Wow!!!

Different culture is irrelevant. First of all you don't attack anyone and second of all you check your culture at the door when it comes to people of another culture.
At least my daughter had to only put up with verbal threats but I agree. When you come here it is on you to change your miserable and offensive behavior. I think the student involved should have been sent back to his home country but the professor in charge tolerates him.

I would have contacted a lawyer about possibly suing the school for allowing sexual harassment even after it being reported. Would probably get their attention and save the next student from having to deal with this individual.

I'd have set the young man down and explained it to him in a way he couldn't possibly misunderstand.

I wanted to get in his face but my daughter is a young adult and I think she had to take care of it herself. She is the one who has to deal with the repercussions. Based on his "culture" I was even afraid of physical retaliation when it came to light why she requested another lab assignment.

From experiences when I was younger, I can tell you that filing a discrimination cases is not easy. Many law firms will not take cases against big organizations. It is not unusual for many law firms in a city to have prior work with a big company/organization that does not let them participate in a lawsuit against them. You are also subject to being a marked employee as a troublemaker. Retaliation can be subtle and bringing a lawsuit is not something to do lightly.

Every report I have seen (and this is the lead story in Germany) is indicating that the belief is that, at least in Köln, the attacks are believed to have been part of an organized thing--so, yes, coordinated.
