Cooler for luggage?

we get 2 free bags each with SW. I was thinking about packing a hard side cooler with some soda, in double plastic bags and taping it closed. Anyone done this? Will Dme take it as long as it has a tag? Just dh and I this trip, we only need a couple of 8 packs. So grocery delivery is out. Thanks!

Yes, you can check a cooler as checked baggage.

If you tape it shut, there is a chance that during screening it will be opened up. And watch the size of the cooler so that you don't get charged for oversize.
"Maximum weight is 50 pounds and maximum size is 62 inches (length + width + height) per checked piece of luggage."

It's a small cooler and it will have 2 8-packs of 12oz diet coke. So no problem with size or weight. I'm not sure the lid would stay on if it wasn't taped. I was thinking the cooler, because it would be better protection for the plastic bottles. I don't want them to get broken in transit. I then have to get the empty cooler back. I might have to rethink this

Just get a luggage strap if you don't want to tape it.

We take a small soft sided cooler as one of our carryons and use it to take snack items down. We then use it to take beverages to the pool. We fold it flat and put it in a suitcase on the way home, or can use if to bring home souvenirs if necessary. Works great.

You could pack something like that in a suitcase with your beverages if you did not want to carry it on. I would worry about the cooler being checked and then not sealed back up properly. Your beverages might end up all over the place.

We always have beverages delivered. Even if it is just DH and I we need a case of beer, water, and coke so I have no experience bringing down beverages.

one thought would be to consider mini bottles instead of cans? they should be fine in a normal suitcase. I have many times successfully and once disastrously transported cans of root beer internationally. never had a problem with bottles, but it only takes one trip through customs with a dripping bag to remember to double bag all future transport!

I take a cooler as luggage all the time. Mine is a zippered one so you may want one like that. Security may search your cooler and pull the tape off. Will it close again?

I would be worried about what would happen to the sodas during the plane travel -- they will get shaken and undergo temperature variations. I have seen what happens when soda cans burst and it is not pretty ...

Our solution is to gave make a grocery order with an online company (we like Garden Grocer) and include the pop we need in that order. They deliver it to our hotel and we are good to go.
