Cool Sister School program

In our homeschool co-op we have been looking for a service project to do with our kids. One of our members came across this information and we learned more about it today. There is an organization here in MN that sets up schools here in the US with sister schools in Vietnam. The president of the organization came and talked to us today all about their program. It costs approx $3 a month to send a child to school there, but many families simply cannot afford even that little amount. The average family's income is about $15 a month and $1 can feed a child for three days so that $3 amount is quite a lot to them. According to this man, the people of the area put a very high priority on education as they know this is the only way up for their children. It was all very inspiring and we have signed up to be sister schools with a school just outside of Hanoi. All of the kids in our group are so excited about this, it is just so cool to see.

I know my kids as well as many others sometimes feel that they cannot do anything to help make a difference and this man explained ways that they could directly help. The kids are planning to do a bake sale, a garage sale and run a Kool Aid stand at the garage sale and donate all of their profits. It really blew the kids away that a pair of shoes there would cost only $5, but then when I pointed out that that same amount of money would be one third of their family income for the month or could feed one of them for at least two weeks, they were just astounded.
