cool new feature coming to aoa resort

It is cool.

That RFID stuff scares me, though. I,keep hearing how easy it is for people to stal the codes with their zappers.

The good wallets to stop this are...ugly. I know ugly shouldn't matter when it comes to this, but until they have cute ones, I'd rather stick with the old.

Of course, I'd still prefer an actual key. But I know that ship has sailed.

old hippie here:hippie: I don't care for all the "big brother" stuff.

but as a server at a restaurant, and bartender at a VFW, I know we have to accept the new ways... sigh....

I kind like it,. at the bar, people tend to forget how much they spent.. when they see it in black and white.. they tip more!!!!

I do NOT like it that something could be registered wrong, and take forever to correct it.

garbage in.. garbage out. once it is registered , it could take a full billling cycle to correct. it could put people over their limit, and incur many extra fees.

I'm talking about these new zapper things. have you heard about this?

People now have these things that pick up all your credit card info...and they never have to touch the cards. All they need to do is wave this thing near you and it picks up the info. The card never leaves your wallet. And it happens more and more.

It's all thanks to this RFID technology. I don't pretend to understand it, but somehow, it emits a signal they can pick up.

Freaks me out a little, especially in a place like WDW, where strangers get close to you all the time.

I should go back to getting cash out of the bank. I loved it when ATMs showed up, but we did all manage to get along before them.

Yes, I don't like it either. It's one thing for a park ticket. It is to easy to crooks to gain access to your room. We'll have to keep our room keys in specia wallets to prevent code stealing. (At least, those of us who are aware of this potential crime.) It will be a pain to obtain fasspasses, use card for charging, etc. as we'll (I'll) have to take it in/out of a special wallet.

No need for special wallets if your are really worried about this. Just cut a piece of aluminum foil twice the size of your card, fold it in half and insert the card between the folds. :teacher:

With a regular men's wallet it seems like you could do the aluminum foil the size of a dollar bill, put it in the back of the section for bills, and viola, when folded everything is protected.

My boys have passport cards from when they went to Canada. These cards have a RFID chip and they came with aluminum envelopes for the cards to be kept in until you need it. (All these cards transmit is a number code for the officials to look up. They don't transmit the actual data.) My point is, maybe these cards would come with something like this too.

that is true. But it isn't super convenient, unwrapping your wallet and re-wrapping it. Tin foil rips, too.

Plus, it is kind of weird. And also not cute.

It is ironic that after all the schizophrenics who use tin foil for odd reasons when they have a break have been made fun of so much, there is now an actual reason to use it to protect yourself. I like to imagine them watching a TV show about a person who had their info stolen this way and saying, "Yeeeaah, who is crazy now?" ;) :)

No need to wrap the entire wallet, only the card. And you don't actually wrap it, you slip the card into the open end of the fold.

It is foolish to think that the information on these cards is unencrypted. For example the credit cards that have Pay Pass on them (a form of RFID) doesn't have the card number in plain text, it's a hash of your number.

Same has passports, and those Nexus cards, they just contain a number that is looked up by the people at the border. Without access to the database used at the border, the number is no use.

I assume your room key will be no different. It won't have your name, and room number and all your info, it'll just be a number, just like your KTTW card has now. There is nothing stopping your server at a restaurant from swiping your credit card through a machine that will make a copy of your credit card.

Magnetic cards are slow, and can be unreliable, the RFID changes that.

The papers keep talking about how this info is being stolen with these zappers. They quote people that were victims. They say it's on the rise.

Go ahead and call me foolish, but it doesn't sound good to me.

Servers don't even have to run the card through another machine any longer. There is some kind of material they can stick right in the valid swiping thing that allows the swipe AND sends the info to somewhere else. This is great for criminals, because even the people who aren't in on it feed cards to them...and it is hard to catch the actual person who stuck it in there.

And there is an easy way to stop te servers form doing that. Pay cash. :)

I know the credit card companaies play it down - that's been in the paper, too. The credit card companies only make money when people use them. If people, like me, get concerned and start going back to cash, they lose billions. They have a good reason to say, "oh, no, not like that," and "very unlikely.". But they also have a great reasons to work toward preventing it. Money again. I'm sure it will all work out one day. :)

But right now...it's concerning. To me, anyway.
