We are going at the end of August and I know FL is wicked hot that time of year. I get cranky when I get too hot....I know, you're wondering "then why August?" Well, I don't want to take DNephew out of school to go during cooler weather.

That said - have any of you tried the Cool Downz? Those are the neck things that you soak in cold water and then put around your neck. The theory is that they will help keep you cool. So I was looking for voices of experience in their use.

Buy them buy them ! We had to use them this last summer when my DS & DD both had their baseball/softball tournaments all day long for three days on teh hottest weekend EVER (I think) in the Twin Cities. THey saved my life - passed them out to the kids in the dugouts and they loved them too.

Haven't tried them, but we were there in August last year (same reason with Dnephews and Dneice) and it was hot... we bought the water spray fans and took them everywhere with us... they were a real help...

We used them when playing Paintball in the summer as well they work great as long as you don't mind your collar getting a bit wet.

We also put one on like a headband under our hats we throw our in the fridge over night .

Love 'em! Before I owned them, I made my own buy wrapping ice in a bandana. Messy, but it worked wonders. If heat bothers you, they are a great thing to have.

Hi
I bought these last August for our trip. We were really glad we had them. I ordered them from QVC. I think I got 6 in a pack.

Thanks for the advice. I will definately be buying these before our summer trip....and QVC has the best price I've found yet, so I know where I'll be shopping. :cool1:

I made my own for our trip last summer. I bought Disney fabric at WalMart and found the crystals at Michael's crafts. It took just a few minutes to whip them up. They worked wonders on those hot August days!

Wow these sound great, we are going in June and i'd like to buy this, where do you buy them and how much do they cost? thanks

You can buy them from QVC - but I was wondering what kind of beads you can buy from Michaels to make your own?

They are crystals that are sold in the floral section of craft stores. I bought mine at Michael's. They basically are little crystals that absorb water and swell up. It doesn't take much to make a neck cooler. I measured out four sections to each neck cooler casing and put about 1 tsp in each section.

I get mine from Walmart. They are in the sporting / camping section. I don't remember the price, but they are cheap.

Definitely take them. What a great way to keep cool. Also, buy the spray fans - just get them at Wal Mart for $5 instead of buying them in the parks for $15.

QVC has a set of 6 for $18.68 plus s&h. I've already ordered ours. DNephew's Scoutmaster and his wife did Philmont last year (50-70 mile hike in New Mexico, backpacking, etc). She said they used them and loved them.
