Cooking in a Studio?

My son and I have taken a couple of trips so far and we have not yet stayed in a studio. We do a lot of eating in the room and I was curious as to what can be cooked in a studio. I'm thinking of saving on some points and booking a studio for one of our trips coming up.

Basically not a ton, you get a microwave, coffee maker, mini-fridge, toaster...no freezer, not much dishes either, not sure about can opener for the few that you need

Sandwiches, toast, bagels, cereals, pop tarts, soups (bring stuff to cook them in), easy mac or the velvetta version, spagetti o's, veggies (canned), you could go down to the store in the hotels and buy hot pockets to go and heat up right away but they are pricey there.

basically anything you can cook in a microwave that doesn't need to be frozen to store.

you could defiantly make it work you would just limit your choices.

Is it possible to cook a scrambled egg in a microwave? I could swear I saw my local bagel store do that. Has anyone ever done this? It would give us another cooking option.

On our last trip, I brought my Brita pitcher and it was the best decision I made. It saved us SO much money on bottled water. We bought a small amount of bottled water and reused the bottles with water from the Brita. I thought the Brita sufficiently filtered the water to a reasonable taste.

I would try at home first...and search around the internet if it doesn't work..i have never tried it.

Yes, DW and I have done it for years. Just break the eggs into a bowl, mix, add what ever you desire and microwave on high. Open every 15 top 20 seconds to stir. Cook until the desired moisture level is reached. they are delicious!

You can get a microwave cook book at a book store. You can cook a full meal in a microwave.

There are some decent pre-packaged microwaveable foods, like pot roast, etc. We did pot roast ad mashed potatoes in a studio. We found them at Wal-Mart in the refrigerated Meats section...I think they were Bob Evans brand. Pretty good.

If you're inventive you can cook alot of things in a studio.
As mentioned, eggs are no problem! You can buy very portable devices too that allow you to poach them, boil them as well.

Assuming you'll have a car -
try buying prewashed bagged salad mix, cukes, toms and some pre cooked chunked chicken or shelf stable salmon - whatever to make chef's salads. (Deli meat for sandwiches can do double duty here).

You can micro/steam chicken breasts, just add rubs or BBQ...and veggies of all sort are available in most stores precut for a quick micro steaming! You can even buy the steam in bag type and keep them in your fridge for a day or two, just adjusting downward the time abit.

Small cooked hams (or turkey hams) can easily be heated in the micro too.

Even fresh fish fillets (with some wax paper over them) will cook up nicely despite the paper plates!
(although honestly, we often pick up a the store some better plates- ie., vanity fair type)

It works quite well. I use it quite frequently when our house was under renovation and all I have working in the makeshift kitchen was a microwave.

Buy some eggs, english muffin, cheese, precooked bacon and you're set.

Microwave your egg(s) and then once it's done put your cheese slice on top of the egg (to melt it a little) while you're waiting for your muffin to finish toasting and bacon finish microwaving.

Put everything together and voila! bacon egg and cheese muffin... yummy

Also if you are driving you can bring a crockpot and that opens up another whole relm of possibilities.

We fly, so unfortunately the crockpot is not an option, but that's such a great suggestion. After next year, our trips will be 1x/year, so it's not worth getting an owners locker to store it.

My local grocery store sells a little $3.00 plastic thing (it actually sells 2 different ones) to microwave eggs in. I've never tried it.

Bed, Bath, & Beyond also sells them (although I don't know the price there).

I do this all the time. Well, not ALL the time, but sometimes. I use the plastic microwave egg poacher thingys. Toast the muffin...sometimes I microwave sausage instead of the precooked bacon. (Note - look for the egg poacher things that are FLAT on one side & test the lid to be sure you can open it and have it lay flat - even in 2 pieces as a top & a bottom is better yet! I have one that is ROUND and is one piece - so problem # 1 is that it won't sit there OPEN and FLAT while I crack the egg into it!! It just wants to fold up on me! Problem # 2 with that one is that a round egg doesn't want to sit on your egg mc muffin very well!!! It just wants to roll off!)

You can also make BLT's... Toast bagels... Oatmeal... You can get frozen microwavable pancakes & waffles.... bagged caesar salad and some of those precooked chicken strips. Soups of course... You can mix up some tuna salad & eat it on toast... Nachos in the microwave... taco salad.... some of those frozen bagged entree meals are pretty good (Bertolli).

Are you talking about the ones at Giant? I got one from Bed, Bath & Beyond that works well & then another from Giant and that one is freaking dysfunctional! It is freaking ROUND so the darned egg won't sit still on a sandwich!!

I had seen it & almost got it for my dad for Xmas. After your post, I'm glad I got the one from Bed, Bath, & Beyond instead.

Besides doing eggs in the micro for egg sandwiches, etc., we have done the following in a OVIR at Vero:

BLT's
Buy Casey's or whatever BBQ pork in a tub in the refrigerated section
Precooked Taco Meat in tub...make tacos and nachos
Many precooked Hormel/Bob Evans entrees
The packages of chicken strips (Tyson precooked) - make wraps
Used canned chicken/tuna for salad sandwiches
Rottisier Chicken - lots of options

Walmart sells an electric skillet with a glass lid for $19.00 You can cook practically anything in it. We stayed in a studio at VGC and cooked all our meals there. It has a non stick coating and is easy to clean, get the smaller square one that fits on the small studio counter. With the lid you can cook many things that require a simmer, you can also do scrambled eggs, burgers and the like. Make sure you bring a plastic spatula and spoon. Even if you had to toss it or donate it before getting back on the plane, it is cheaper than one Disney meal would be for the two of you.

Just saw this thread... you could always invest in a few small appliances and keep them in your Owners Locker. Wish I could offer which appliances but we just signed up for OL for our upcoming trip. Hubby wants to buy a french press for his Starbucks coffee to keep in there!

We need a studio cookbook.
Maybe some one can start a thread where all these suggestions are complied .

I tried doing a web search for microwave cooking, but most things were not suited for the kitchenette. There were some dorm meal suggestions & a funny office cooking video on youtube. I college I had an RA who cooked mac & cheese in a pecolator!

After the digestive upset (I suffered on our cruise last week I suppose from the dramatic change in diet), I am determined not to let that happen on our May trip & ruin it for me. On our Dec trip I stuck to my usual b'fast & that probably prevented it. So budget is nott the only reason to cook in studio.
