cooking ideas?

Another vote for cooking outside. The smells really linger in the camper. We have a 30 ft TT with oven, cooktop and microwave inside, but we set a little kitchen area under our awning. Each year we seem to add new equipment to it so it is pretty well set up now. We have an outdoor kitchen station (BJ's) which has a high shelf in the center with another shelf below and two lower side shelfs for utensils etc. We either use our propane grill or electric griddle on the top depending on what we are cooking. The electric griddle is great for pancakes, eggs, bacon, sausage, chicken etc. We use the grill for cooking meats and potatoes (slice a potato, place in aluminum foil add a clump of butter and garlic or other seasonings and sealed packet on grill, yummy). We also have an electric skillet, but rarely use it.

We always do a low country boil outside the camper. You just add shrimp, sausage, corn, new potatoes, whatever else you want all in one pot with shrimp boil and there you go! It is wonderful and easy to fix. It will have everyone in the campground stopping by!
We are also big breakfast eaters at dinnertime. It is fast and easy and best of all CHEAP!

I have a 36 foot 5th wheel & I cook inside often. We do grill the meat usually, but the sides & such I do inside on my stove top or oven. I jsut run the fans & keep the windows ajar-takes car of any smell. It usually smells like campfire after the first night anyway!

I use my crockpot very often. I make turkey sloppy joes, pulled pork sandwiches, french dip sandwiches, pork roasts in it. I also do shishkabob, grilled chicken & rice, steaks, turkey brugers or turkey dogs, lunchmeat rollups. I figure I would be cooking if we were at home anyway & it is so hard to get good, balanced meals elsewhere.

To all you folks cooking outside... Thanks!! There is nothing like the smell of bacon and sausage frying in the morning. I always comeback from the comfort station hungry after my shower :teeth:

We ordered our hybrid with an oven. We had mixed feelings, especially given the space you lose, however I wanted an option for those bad weather days when I (dh) didn't want to be outside cooking.

In the oven I like to make a breakfast casserole you make the night before that the first person up throws in the oven. At least for us, by the time we are all ready to go with any bags/snacks packed we can sit down for a hot breakie. Unless we are in a rush to get somewhere for opening, that is. Otherwise for the oven I will make muffins, throw in frozen prepared food if too tired to cook.

I like to use the crock pot too for shredded beef (put in a roast (any kind) with 1 package of onion soup mix and 1/2 cup water. before serving, shred with forks and serve on buns with a salad) and spaghetti sauce.

I also cook up a bunch of boneless chicken breasts and freeze them to use later for chicken salad, chicken caesar salad wraps, fajitas, etc etc.

We don't cook inside our RV much, there are not really any problems, but it gets very hot. We have a camp stove and a weber Q. There is no reason for us to cook inside and make it so hot, and the smoke alarms go off sometimes!! Good luck

And here my husband always blamed my cooking for the smoke detectors going off! :) He always said that I used that instead of the oven timer

LOL!!!! What is it with those smoke detectors in RVs??? I just take mine down before I start cooking and put it back up when I'm finished. Even making toast sets the darn thing off!

We just returned from a 3.5 week camping trip. OUr favorite meal was boil in bag rice with beef tips. We found the beef tips in the deli section. It is designed to bake in the oven (in it's own pan), however, we found it boiled the bag in the same pan with the rice. We also had Salisbury steak this way. They make enchiladas & chinesse entrees as well. The frozen skillet dinners with the meat alread in the bag work well also.

DON'T TAKE THEM DOWN!!!!!! Just go to a "Dollar Store" and get some cheap shower caps. Attach some ribbon on them so as not to forget them, and use them to cover the smoke det. during cooking. Works great

What a great idea! I'll have to try that.
