Good grief, I can't stop posting about donuts.

But y'all reminded me about growing up in Cheektowaga (NY). After church every Sunday, we'd join the crowds at Ziegler's Bakery where I'd press my nose up against the glass until my parents bought me a cake donut with sprinkles.

Anyone know if Ziegler's is still around up there? I assume it was a family bakery.

If anyone is ever up in New England, (Wells, Maine to be specific) it's worth a stop at Congdon's Doughnuts.
The.Best.Evah! :thumbsup2

Man, everybody's remembering their childhood thru plates and donuts today. Makes me feel a little sad and old lol. We have a country station that plays the older stuff from the 70's and 80's here in Jax. I heard "I am a lineman for the county" by Glen Campbell the other day and that made me think of the 70's for sure as it was pretty popular when I was a kid.

Bring back the 70's I tell you.

Yeah Donnie, I got to surfing online yesterday about old roadtrip memories from back then. After driving up to Buffalo and back in the past week, i can tell you the interstates don't have the personality they did back then. I found some old websites yesterday devoted to the Holiday Inn Great Sign....what an icon!

I remember trips to Florida as a kid. If my Dad was feeling extra generous, we'd stop at a Holiday Inn. i loved running up and down those hallways, jumping in the pool, and getting to pick anything I wanted from the kids menu in the restaurant, which was rare back then. Boy times have changed. Those simple pleasures I just named are so commonplace these days. I also loved stopping at Hojo's, and eating at Dutch Pantry restaurants....boy, this should be its own thread! 70's road trip memories!!

I would apologize about hijacking this thread, but since I started it i guess I can do what I want!

WHAT?????? :scared1:

Vivian left???? :scared1::scared1:

I didn't know that.

It won't be the same without her.

I would apologize about hijacking this thread, but since I started it i guess I can do what I want!

I'm sorry that I don't have any nostalgic donut stories to add. The only donuts we ever got were from Dunkin Donuts.

But, If you want to go back and edit your first post so the rest of this thread makes no sense, I can definitely participate in a '70's road trip discussion.

That's it! We now have a reason to have another grand gathering. This one will be a meeting of the donuts of the world. Everyone will bring their favorite donuts from their hometown and we will have a taste off. :rotfl:

OH MY GOODNESS!! ZIEGLER'S!! That's right up there with Broadway Market's Easter Kielbasa!! I'll have to ask my brother that lives in Cheektowaga if Ziegler's is still open. I don't think it is...but I'll ask.

Holiday Inn!! The place of "Kiddie Cocktail's with a Marchino Cherry"!! I felt so grown up ordering a Kiddie Cocktail or a Shirley Temple!! That was a real treat!

Anyone remember a chain of diners named "Your Host"?

Deb, I actually Googled Your Host the other day looking for any information...and there's not much out there. I loved sitting in those booths and eating fries and gravy.

I worked in high school at Brand Names (another Buffalo blast from the past) and it was next door to a Your Host. I'd always walk over and order fries and gravy for dinner....and they would FILL one of those large take out containers with fries and cover it with brown gravy. It's amazing I didn't drop dead one day right there in the booth.

This thread is HILARIOUS -- bringing back all kinds of memories from childhood. I remember sitting in the back of the Gremlin while Mom ran errands to Brand Names and Two Guys...and birthdays were always at the restaurants at HoJo's where they'd sing to you and give you a complimentary orange sherbet with a sugar cookie stuck on top...

Deb, can't wait to hear if Ziegler's is still around...

For anyone interested, I've started a new thread on 70's memories. It's actually more interesting than donuts I guess! Not that I don't love donuts. :rotfl:

Oh for pete's sake Dave !!:hippie: Do you really expect me :hippie: to remember the 70's ??:hippie:
Come on,:hippie: that ain't even funny.:hippie:

No disrespect Frank....but....the K.K.'s in my area are made elsewhere and are usually stale by the time you get them. I've never had a fresh K.K. :sad2:

This is becoming more of a "Memories From 1970's Western New York".

How about King Submarine? YUM!!

When I moved to Florida in 1973, we had Masters Merchandise - which was the same as Brand Names. Nothing was similar to Two Guys.....except maybe Twin Fair!!

Can anyone tell me if Park Edge Grocery Store is still around? That place was a true adventure!

Oh....and most of the 70's is a blur to me :hippie:.

I work at a "corporate" Kreme.
I recently found out that everything south of St. Augustine in Florida is completely franchised, has been since the 70's, and corporate has very little control over them.
In fact corporate can't build a Kreme south of St. Augustine.
So what you have experienced is absolutely possible, and that IS a sad thing.
This is one instance that it is better to be corporate.

I guess i'd have to count myself lucky. We happen to have two stores in the area fairly close (one on the way to work).

Tim Horton's Apple Fritter - if you can get one while it's still warm . . . heaven on earth!

My favorite donuts come from the Flamingo Donut Cafe on Hilton Head Island. The donuts are fresh, hand-dipped donuts that are custom made for you. They are melt-in-your-mouth incredible!!!
