My husband and I (not knowing this would be the last year) had set a goal to run the EEC in 2016. I have a chronic illness (non life threatening!) and this was a big goal of mine and would be a huge accomplishment. We are thinking of giving it a go this year upon finding out it's our last shot. Convince me it's worth the drive from Michigan for a two or three day trip to run this race! Convince me I can get in shape by May! Or agree with my logical side that taking extra time off work, arranging care for our kids for five days and driving 20 hours or shelling out $500 for airfare is silly.
 
Look at it this way: if any of us listened to our logical side, does it make sense to pay hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars, travel thousand of miles, just to run in a race? NO!

Do we all continue to do it and have fun? YES!

Go for it. Sign up for the race, then worry about the details.

And yes, you can get in shape in time. The race entry will be motivation.

Check the SWA from FNT...they are cheaper than DTW and they have non-stop options.

You have plenty of time to prepare. I gave myself a year (started running in August 2012) to get in shape for the 5K during Wine and Dine Weekend 2013. Instead of doing the 5K, I did the 1/2 Marathon! Like a PP mentioned, the registration fee alone is enough motivation. Once I'd shelled out $200 to do the 1/2, I trained my heinie off! I didn't care about my times, I just wanted to finish. Let me tell you, crossing that finish line and getting that medal are worth every bit of agony that you endure during your training. It's totally worth it and you will not regret it:goodvibes.

Not sure what limitations your illness may put on training, but Disney's 5ks are probably among the friendliest for walkers with the 16:00/mi pace requirement and the relatively shorter distance (compared with other rD events). Also, anecdotally the pace enforcement has been a bit lax with AK since there's not the same issue with road closures and re-opening parks that comes with other events which need more roadways or occur during the day time.

If you can train to run any portion of the event, or would like to train to run the full 5k before doing whatever for the scavenger hunt portion, I'd recommend looking into either Couch-to-5k plan or Jeff Galloway plans, or both! Each will provide a way of easing yourself into walking a bit for exercise and making a gradual transition into running to improve upon pace.
