I just got a 4th Generation, 32G iPod Touch, and my friend told me that to play shows/movies/music videos on it, they need to be in mp4 format. Which converter do you use? I've tried a couple free ones, and they seem to a)produce an error and close; b)only convert 3 minutes of the program, or c)have really poor-looking output (i.e. I can't see any words printed on the screen). I don't mind paying up to $20 for one, if the quality is good.

:flower3: Thanks so much; this baby was expensive, and I want to make good use out of it!!!

I use Nero Vision, essentially making a movie with the old format as source, and then exporting the movie as MP3 or MP4 to get my output.

However, it's $60. I know that they used to sell Nero Recode separately; I think it would just do the conversion directly. (I don't use it because I typically do editing and such.) However, I checked Nero's website and they apparently don't sell Recode separately any more. I suppose that there's not much profit in offering a $20 product that does the same thing.

the problem you have is that avi is the most barebone format. movie files and other videos are downgraded to avi so that they won't be a 2 gb file, they can lower a standard movie to 700mb. the problem is that the picture sometimes becomes pixelated and what not. when transferring to mp4, you don't gain quality back.

That said, HandBrake is the gold standard of video conversion. period.
It is above and beyond the best at what it does.

If you don't want to get into HandBrake, go with Freemake. It is dead simple but doesn't give you the control HandBrake does.

Both are free. Paying for conversion software is a joke.

I use this freeware for most of my conversions, whatever they are:

:flower3: Thanks for your help, everyone! I found a converter that works, and have been enjoying my iPod very much. Of course, now I want an iPad...:cool1:
