I just got around to reserving a car for my upcoming trip. I went to National Car Rental, where I'm an "Emerald Club" member. (Joined using info I got at Mousesavers.)

At first, I was given a quote of over $400 dollars for a 7 day midsize rental. Ouch! The dates were December 25 - January 1st, so I thought perhaps the problem was just high demand. But, then I tried replacing the contract code that National Car had listed for me, with a different one from Mousesavers. The price dropped to $207!

The Contract ID that I used was 5125601 and you can read about it on Mousesavers at www.mousesavers.com/national.html#codes

Mousesavers recommends trying various combinations of codes/coupons/contract IDs to see which give a good rate.

Thanks for the tip! I'm off to check my res to see if it goes lower!

is this the "1 variable rate" code?

Oh wow! Friends are leaving for Disney soon for a week stay. They weren't going to rent a car because the rates were so high. I just went to the National site and for a week from Dec 18-Dec 25, an intermediate car is $533.76 and with the code the rate is a total of $207.48! What a BIG difference! I've been trying to contact them via email and phone and so far no answer so I hope they haven't left yet!

Yeah, I looked on Mousesavers and it looks like the contract ID was sent to some new AMEX cardholders. So it could be OK to use but you should probably use an AMEX card to be safe.

We had planned to use another card but if they insist we will have our AMEX with us just in case! Rate is too good to give up.

National rental rates have been pretty good lately. I have a full size reserved for Jan. 15-22 (8 days) and am paying $96 for an 8 day rental ($124 after taxes and fees). Probably one of the best rates I've gotten in a long time. Using Executive Aisle (for full size or better), priceless code 6600330 and the $20 coupon from entertainment book.

Thanks! Just canceled our Budget ressie and switched to National. Saved $20.
