We usually fly VA to MCO but this year we are considering Continental from Belfast via Newark as we think it will be easier with 2 small children. VH are also charging a lot for the connecting flights.

Has anyone used Continental lately if so what did you think?

We always use Continental fron Dublin or Shannon and they are fine. Newark is a good airport to connect at, it's easy to get around and has plenty of places to eat. I'd have no hesitation reccommending them

Thanks, was going to allow 3 hrs for connection on the way there and 2 ish hrs on the way back, what do you think?

we managed it with an hour and a half between flights, but I wouldn't recommend doing that at all. My dh is mad! It was a real rush so I think your 3 hours sounds a lot more realistic!

Thanks, I am hoping this will give us time to get something to eat!:)

I agree - three hours should be plenty to get something to eat on the way out :thumbsup2

If necessary, the return connection could be tighter because there are no immigration formalities and your luggage goes directly onto the UK flight without your involvement.

Great thats good to know!

Hi

We used Continental from Belfast via Newark last year and it was fine. Our plane was a bit older than some and had no seat back tvs however everything was ok. Met the rudest security guard at Newark I have ever seen. One lady asked him not to shout as he was frightening her children and he told if she didn't like it then don't fly with Continental!! I would allow 3hours out as you have to go through immigration, security, get your luggage off and take it to another place. It looks totally random and we were surprised our luggage arrived in Orlando. Just ask all the time if you're not sure about anything. On the way back we had about 3 hours in between flights however this was needed as we were delayed leaving Orlando - if you miss your connecting flight and it is due to weather you have to put yourself up somewhere for the night at your expense and hopefully get on the next Continental flight to Belfast. Make sure you print your boarding passes 24 hrs before each flight as it means you don't have to check in for your connecting flights - just go to the departure gate (check this hasn't changed). At Belfast Int. they are very professional and you can pick up the Visa Waiver forms at check in. I would fly with them again however having done all the connecting flights even from Dublin I still prefer the direct flight from Belfast.

I usually fly with VA from Dublin, like you found they were charging a fortune for the connecting flights (to/from Gatwick).
We ended up booking our connecting flights ourselves on the 'net' , saving approx €150 BUT it mean't taking off our cases and re-checking them in-NOT a problem as son and I only took 2 small pieces of hand luggage between us BUT that may be a problem with 2 small children.

Have you considered staying overnight at Gatwick night before and doing Twilight check-in (you can get some really good hotel room prices) and you could do the same on the way back OR

Try flying with flyglobespan.com-they do flights direct from Belfast to Sanford,Orlando on a Tuesday and Friday (I think) during the summer.

Other than that, I haven't flown Continental but know Tinktatoo has, so would go with her suggestion.

Good Luck

Lam:)

Thanks for all the info guys! Great tip about the 24 hr online check in.

On previous trips we have stayed at the Hilton the night before and used twilight check in, it's great.:)
