Contemporary to undergo construction; DVC coming?

The Contemporary holds no interest for me, but hubby said he'd buy points there if they made it DVC. I think that pool really needs a rehab, too. The slide looks like the one at the YMCA. I'm all about theming baby. :teeth:[/QUOTE

This is the same for us. hubby LOVES the Contempory, I want more points. I see it as a win/win for our family. :)

So I guess it's just a pipe dream that they could ever open a DVC at the AKL!!
or just a fantasy in my head :rotfl:
For that I would give in to the urge to add-on, but alas, not for the CR. :sad2:

Anyone know what the square footage of the existing Contemporary Rooms is in the wings? Could DVC rooms be made quickly because they don't have to start from scratch?

The garden wings were built at the same time as the Contemporary itself and used the same modular construction techniques. They are simply hotel rooms and not at all suitable for DVC purposes.

The South Garden Wing of the Contemporary Resort is closed for refurbishment May 30 through October 31. This first phase of a major renovation for Disney's oldest resort hotel is badly needed, with the resort really showing its age. We hear that the new room decor will be done in earth tones with white duvets. The furnishings will be more up-to-date as well, with glass and steel desks and flat-screen or plasma televisions. Reportedly, a model room has been completed and looks very nice.

The rumors that we hear is that the entire resort is repositioning to target a specific clientele. Or, rather, two specific clienteles. Supposedly, the buildings in the South Garden Wing will be gutted and rebuilt as Disney Vacation Club villas. The remainder of the hotel would be modified to target conventions, with families with children to be steered toward the Wilderness Lodge. We are still trying to confirm these changes.

I can't see this becoming a DVC resort. There are a couple of conflicts in the story itself that tell me the story is more wishful thinking that real life. If the rooms were being converted to DVC units, they wouldn't be talking about a refurbishment of the room decor -- and it would take longer than 6 months for any DVC conversion to be done.

Additionally, DVC currently has a lot of units yet to be built (and sold) at SSR and wouldn't be ready to move on to a new location at this time.

Well, there may be reasons why it isn't true, but I don't see these two as being either of them. If Contemporary is in badly needed shape requiring refurbishment, as I think it is, why wait. There are certainly times when there have been two resorts selling in the past. And, who says that the Contemporary theme isn't an appropriate DVC theme. Seems WLV copied off of WL and BCV copied much from BC. It's a prime location, why put it off if it can be done quickly. Contemporary rooms are large. We've stayed at a suite at the Contemporary before, with a washer and dryer it would make a wonderful DVC villa.

I think the addition of some resorts help the sales of others. I think the offsite resorts help people when they ask themselves if they want to go to WDW EVERY year. A contemporary option could help all resorts. Why does SSR have to sell more quickly, seems like it's doing fine with sales. What's the hurry, compared to someone staying in sub par contemporary rooms because refurbishment is delayed. If there's money to be made in a quality manner, I think that is the consideration that will be the determinant.

Studios? Why not?

We sound like kids in a candy shop: I'd like some of OKW, a little of VWL, a smidgeon of BWV, a dash of SSR, some BCV and possibly some CR and a bit of AKL. Anything else? Let me think about it.

So many potential destinations, so little time.

Maybe it's time to once again bring up the VMO - Villas at Mars Outpost....

I double checked my CR floor plan they gave me when we were there last summer. The South Wing has about 107 regular rooms per floor. So that would be over 300 rooms, just in that one wing. I would think that they could put in some DVC type units fairly easily. I for one, would be very happy staying there. It's one of our favorite resorts!!!

Same here - we love the Contempory

So, could it be that the current SSR incentive was a way to get some quick cash upfront to justify the funding needed to have construction going on at two DVC sites simultaneously?

I think it would be great if they turned the Contemporary into nothing but DVC studios (as long as the point requirements as similar to those already in place). It really wouldn't be too difficult to add microwaves, refrigerators, and toasters. Each of the floors already have laundry facilities.

I would definitely stay there and be a monorail groupee (of course, it would be embarassing shoving all those little kids out of the way, trying to ride up front each time)!!!

One thing,
I'm not saying that they are going to make the garden wings dvc, and I'm not saying that even if they do make them dvc that they will do it any time soon.

But I did want to say this. I don't see any reason to think that if they did make the wings into a dvc resort that they would have to follow the same style of rooms that are avialable at the other resorts. They have "inn rooms"
at vero beach, and they could have "inn rooms" at the contemp. wings, too.

There isn't anything that says that they always have to follow the studio-one-bedroom-two-bedroom plan (and bcv and vwl don't have 3-bedrooms, so that's already been done).

If they ever do make them dvc, and they might do it, they might make them studio-one-bedroom-two-bedroom, but they might not, they don't have to do it that way.

Also, there are currently some suite type rooms in those wings as well.

Having said that, I'll also say that I don't see the monorail access from the wings being as nice as the monorail access from the tower. I guess it as nice as some rooms at the polly or the GF that are a long way from the main building.

I'll say one last thing, I would buy points at somewhere like Cont. or Polly even if they didn't make a "DVC building" but just used them at the regular rooms at a rate that was more in line with the DVC properties instead of the higher rate they are at now. Or even one of the Ca. hotels.

Great points you've made in your posts. Many people may be interested if they made adjoining studios available at the contemporary location.

I could see why it may not appeal to some, but monorail and walking distance to teh MK when you have little ones is very inviting. I haven't read any reasons to prevent it so far. It could easily happen. The Contemporary needs some revitalization, a DVC wing would be nice.

We just purchased SSR about a month ago and my DH was a little reluctant, simply because he likes the Poly so much. Our guide told him "there will be a DVC on the monorail, if you can wait about 2 yrs." He never said where, whether it was an add-on to a resort hotel or new construction.

Our guide has been around a long time and is pretty knowledgeable. My guess is they will renovate the Contemporary, but it doesn't sound like they are going to get the DVC area done any time soon.

PS - we decided to buy SSR now and add-on later when/if they build on the monorail.... (is add-on fever contagious?) :flower:

Add on fever strikes when you least expect it to LOL it has bitten us 2 times once for VB and now not to long ago for SSR.

hehehe I have been around less than 6 months and you would not believe the rumors that fly from all sorts of sources - - -like guides and bus drivers, etc. I am glad you didnt wait on that monorail resort to buy in. You might never have joined!

We stayed at the Contemporary last May and the guard gave us the best "Welcome Home"! Better than when we stayed at our home, Old Key West.

I hope they give established DVC members a chance to buy into a "monorail" dvc resort before selling to the general public. I wouldn't be surprised if the general public never got a chance, Contemporary-haters notwithstanding. (It would be the most important resort to have an 11month window.)

I always thought the rumor was just that. It's starting to gather a hint of credibility. :earboy2:

If the CV (Contemporary Villas) get going...I feel that Disney will put the offer out there at $100/point for sure....at least.

I know that I'd be tempted to add-on considering the convenience of the monorail, but that's quite a steep price. It would be very tough to get into the CV without that 11-month window I would imagine too.

I guess we'll see what happens!

this resort and all the utilities are 34 years old - DVC would tear it down and start again. remember the DI had just been completely redone and that was not good enough for DVC.

However 2 years is pretty quick. I would think they would need to start shortly. So maybe before this year is out - if the rumors are true - we will heard something.

If Disney did do that at the Contemporary, I bet the price per point would be bigtime... and I have to admit.. I'd open my check book so fast it wouldn't even be funny...
