Construction at CR

Surely, you don't think they'd rehab the North bldg. then tear it down to build a DVC?

Assumed they'd just bull-doze it, pour new foundation & start anew?

No one is sure they will tear it down, even if DVC goes in there. They could refit it for DVC. AKL opened 2001 and now 5 years later they are redoing 2 floors for DVC. What is the difference in rehabbing the North Wing and then in 5 years rehabbing it for DVC.

The opening of a DVC resort there could easily be 5-10 years away due to AKV.

Disney is not going to let the North Wing sit there empty while waiting. Since they are doing such an extensive rehab of the rest of the Contemporary, lobby, restaurants, shops, etc. it only makes sense for DVC to wait until that is finished.

Plus no one is sure if DVC goes in, that the North Wing will even be affected. It might remain a part of the exisiting resort with DVC going elsewhere.

I will also be there next month. We will be bringing our laptop, so I will be able to post what I see going on. We are in the tower, so maybe I can get some pictures if I can figure out how to post them.

During our June trip this past year the CR was unavailable to book anything but tower rooms from 6 months prior, I gave up 3 weeks before our trip.

Easily booked for Oct. trip in May...all type of rooms were available, even using AAA disc.

Same time period for June 07, no availability at all.

Realize that conventions block out rooms but, seems early for June.

Wondering if unavailability is due to conventions or if the north building will still be unavailable?

Cannot remember the timeline for the South building. Knew it was under rennovation during Dec. '05 trip, not sure how long it took to complete. Believe they opened it in sections while work was still on-going...

anyone remember?

3 things can be happening - your guess to which 3

1) this is just a rehab to the North wing - which needed a heck of alot more work than the south wing. remember some people here complainted about wall damage at the north wing.

2) they are building the DVC building - but they are building it for the Cont not DVC - don't know about this one

3) they are building the DVC building - can't announce it because of Florida law - they have to had so much completely first. AKLV is just a redo of rooms and won't take long to be a DVC resort. the North wing is not in good shape and needs to be taken down and completely rebuild.

at this point I don't think that Disney has decided. which is why the crews at the Cont are going so slow. In the same amount time (or close to it) they had almost done the South wing.

Disney promised no new hotels - but they are changing Music to suites. So don't know if they think the Cont would be the same. I don't see how. the music only needed a couple of walls removed. Not the entire building taken down.

so time will tell.

I was just at the Contemporary & while I was not able to get a picture of the construction around the North Garden Wing, I can tell you from what I saw they are renovating it the same way they did the South Garden Wing. There was a huge fence around the North parking lot & when I took a better view from the 4th floor windows, I saw a lot of cars there with construction workers moving a lot of stuff around. Finally there was no evidence of them planning to blow up the North Garden Wing.

I couldn't tell how far along the renovation was going, as I stated before all I saw was the construction workers moving stuff around & I could not tell what any of it was.

Anyway this is what i think about CR NGW- When i was at CR two weeks ago, i watched them work on NGW and this is what i noticed. They are being very prticular about what they are doing/throwing away. If they were going to tear it down, they would just put a wrecking ball to it. So i think they are doing a very extensive renovation to it bacause it had some hurricane damage, and who knows maby they are making NGW into DVC units?

So I will believe it when I see it.

I was talking with a cast member in the Atrium Club and she said CR managment had a very detailed plan of what to do with CR but had to scrap the plan because something went wrong. This leads me to beleive they were going to tear down NGW, but had to redo their plan for some reason.

I stayed in the tower from 12-22 to 12-29 and they have the north wing fenced off but there is no signs that it will be demolished. It appears that it is being gutted, from all the dumpsters around and the pallets sitting everywhere but nothing happened while I was there except for hotel staff going in and out.

I also noticed the North Garden wing during my Christmas trip. Still fenced off, and the building looked like it was gutted. It was actually fairly creepy, especially since the balconies were infested with buzzards!

Has anyone heard about the rumor to move the Food and fun Center to the 4th floor? Has any work begun on that? I'm staying at The Contemporary in August and I'm nervous that it will be closed during my stay. My kids love the food center and arcade and it may affect our decision to stay there. Thanks for any info.

I'm staying at The Contemporary in August and I'm nervous that it will be closed during my stay. My kids love the food center and arcade and it may affect our decision to stay there. Thanks for any info.

At one point this was the plan but it was scrapted. As of right now they are comeing up with a 1st abd 4th plan so I would not expect to see anything starting anytime soon.
