North Not So Contemporary

It looks more and more certain that the North Garden Wing at the Contemporary resort will soon be razed and replaced with a Disney Vacation Club section. It has recently been found that Walt Disney Company has filed an Environmental Resource Standard General Permit with the South Florida Water Management District under the commercial project name “DVC @ The Contemporary Construction Trailer Compound”. The permit is for the compound to be placed on the former STOLport site, which has been long rumoured to be the staging ground for the DVC construction. While this permit does not point to the location of potentially new DVC units, the construction walls currently around the North Wing and the permit being granted on 9/6/2006, seem to imply the site will be used for construction on the North Wing site. Construction has reportedly started on the North Wing Site, recent reports hold that the parking lot has begun to be dug up.

Update 11/9/2006 Assuming the "DVC @ The Contemporary Construction Trailer Compound" project name isn't a red herring, it seems nearly certain that Disney Vacation Club units will replace the North Garden Wing. In addition to the general permits for the construction staging area, Disney has also filed a Demolition Permit for the address of the North Garden Wing. (click "view pdf" button to view). The permit was granted on the 5th of October 2006 and expires December 28, 2007; so it appears that the North Garden Wing could be razed between now and the end of next year.

I will believe it when the building comes down.

I have been told many times that they are doing rehab, including asbestos removal and roof replacement due to hurricane damage.

So when someone post a photo of the building down, then I will be a believer.

That is why I asked for photos. We were there in late August, and it was business as usual. That said, the permits were issued about a week after our visit. Circumstantial evidence leads to the timing; just after Labor Day.
CR DVC rumors are swirling- some physical evidence would help...

Oh I agree and if it is happening the CMs working there are not aware of it. That is not to say that upper management is not up to something, but friends that work at the resort have been told that the asbestos removal in the North Wing was much more than they orginially thought and hurricane damage was more extensive hence the need for a demolition permit.

Thank you. I am not trying to ascertain the validity of the rumored DVC CR; but simply the level of activity at the North Wing.

An extensive rehab sounds plausable but maybe that info is a red herring because they want to buy to some time before they make an official announcement.

There is a lot of evidence out there that more is happening at the CR than a rehab --even more than a roof repacement.

Time will tell.

I agree. I believe that DVC is coming to the Contemporary. The permit for the Trailer Storage Compound states right on it that it's a Trailer Storage Compound for DVC @ the Contemporary.

I'm sure we'll all know soon if the building is coming down.

Thanks for asking this question. :thumbsup2

I keep hoping some DISser will report on actual activity at the CR rather than CM rumors. The fence has been up for some time now. You would think that something must be happening whether it be in anticipation of refurbishment or demolition.

I will be at the Contemporary next month & if the Internet access is still free in the rooms on the Atrium Club, I will report what I see going on with the North Garden Wings, from the computer in our room. I will be unable to load pictures as my family & I do not own a lap top to upload pictures onto while we are away, so you will just have to take my word on what I see. However even if I am just stating what I see, it's better then just rumors going around of what might be happening because I will see it with my own eyes.

CR Resort Fan, we'll look forward to your report...no need for pictures! :thumbsup2

Just curious what is CM rumor vs guest rumor. :confused3 I mean why is one more valid than another.

Oh, absolutely no difference!

I think Von Drake and I are just eager to hear of actual activity.

Speaking of that, Sammie.....are you willing to do some reconnaissance? ;)

I just remebered I could try & take pictures with my cell phone, although latley I have had trouble sending them to my e-mail from my phone. Also the picture quality would not be as good as a digital camera would be & harder to zoom in.

not close enough. Traveling with business and possibly moving soon due to business. I did talk with a friend who works there and other than moving in equipment, closing on the parking lot, etc and issuing a memo to them about the rehab, that was all they know from actually being there.

I have no doubt DVC will come there eventually, but not soon. I don't think they will build there until all the rehab of the interior is finished including the moving of shops and restaurants, and redoing the lobby, front desk area. They are going for a complete and total new look for the interior, similar to the rooms. It will be first class when finished.

I just think the North wing damage and rehab is going to be much more extensive than the South Wing, as I was told. When all that is finished and AKV is at the stage that SSR is now, I think DVC there will be announced.

Thanks CR Resort Fan.

If anyone gets a chance, a couple of photos from the monorail will give us a great deal of info. Looking forward to furthe info...

Surely, you don't think they'd rehab the North bldg. then tear it down to build a DVC?

Assumed they'd just bull-doze it, pour new foundation & start anew?

Look forward to CR Resort Fan's report:thumbsup2

If they are going to build a DVC where the North Wing is now is the time . Otherwise I would think a DVC at the CR will at least be 7-10 years away if ever.

That is precisely the point. Why go through an extensive rehab with DVC appearing even more likely in light of the recent permits issued?

If the Federal Government stepped in and mandated asbestos remidiation, why not just shut it down and accelerate DVC construction? The only conclusions that I can draw is that the North wing will be gone VERY soon, or it will be there for years to come. It would be a waste of money to rehab the building and then tear it down in a couple of years.
