I suffer from this and wanted to know your tricks...I have occipital neuralgia therefore I am on many pain/muscle relaxer meds...so I need some insight on how to keep me regular...sorry if TMI

I am going to move this to the disABILITIES Community Board where it will be on topic and hopefully seen by more people who can help.

Constipation is a problem with any kind of pain relievers and muscle relaxants because they relax all muscles, including the ones that keep the GI tract moving along.
Many people find it takes a while to get a balance. Stool softeners are usually helpful because the longer the stool stays in the intestines, the more fluid is absorbed from them. (Not TMI for me, I'm a nurse).

Folks in my family eat those little bowls of Dole Mandarin Oranges - like they eat 2 little bowls in the evening and then the next morning, things work like a charm for them. Both of these people have suffer constipation issues most of their lives and just this past year started using the oranges and they work fabulous for them. For myself, all I need is my Shredded Wheat :goodvibes I've never had too much of a problem being constipated - I mean, I don't go every day but that is my normal rhythm.

HTH :goodvibes

you can also try PLUM SMART. It is a cousin of the prune juice except this taste way better and yummy!!! It will have you going in no time!! HTH:flower3:

Miralax is an OTC that many use. I know that's just another pharmaceutical to add in. Have you talked with your doctor? If you aren't interested in another medecine, may be check into more natural herbs, asking your doc of course about those. Herbs can interact with other meds so you need their input! Good luck!

My son had that with the pain meds he was on and his doctor told him to drink Pear juice every day. We could only find it in the baby food isle, but it really works and it taste good ( he did not like prune juice).

I swear by Mc donalds Quater pounders. All that grese makes things go. The madrin orange thing works for me too. Popcorn is also a good one.

ugh
My daughter has had such terrible battles with constipation, since she is out of diapers it is finally normal (go figure! lol)
But we actually had to take her to a GI dr. Who gave us these tips:

Stay away from dairy, he told us to DD could have one string cheese stick, one glass of milk, or one yogurt a day until she was "regular" again.
Fruits with seeds are the best (especially raspberries, prunes) and grapes.
water, water, and more water, drink as much as you possibly can.
And anything with fiber :thumbsup2.
O and wanted to add baked beans, DD doesn't like them, but they are high in fiber content.
Finally, he told us to use miralax for her, 1/2 capful in the morning, then another 1/2 capful at night. After one week cut the dosage in half, then another week cut it in another half until she isn't relying on miralax anymore. I would ask you DR. about this first obviously, your dosage would probably be different as well since you are an adult.
Fell better, watching DD go through that was so awful, I felt so bad for her. Thankfully she is finally "regular".

I'm pregnant and seem to have this problem... the midwife told me an apple a day keeps the doctor away is a well known saying because it's true. Apples have tons of fiber.

When I was using a Fentanyl patch after surgery, I used Colace daily. If things got really bad, Magnesium Citrate. They're both OTC. I forget the name of the ones that taste like bad chocolate, but while I never liked how long it took to work, it would get the job done. I've never found Mineral Oil to be particularly effective, and it's quite nasty, to boot. But my favorite remedy is ice cream! I'm lactose intolerant and it worked wonderfully.

I also found that avoiding heavy meats (burgers) helped a lot in prevention.

(I'm all about taking drugs to help relieve serious discomfort. I see no reason to waste time with things that "may" work, when there are plenty of cheap remedies that "do" work).

DD has been on narcotic pain meds for months. She sees a pediatric gastro DR, and she recommended Miralax as well. She is a teen, so it is hard to get her to adjust her diet.......

I get constipation EVERY time I go to Disney. Last trip, I ate a fiber bar every morning and took Fibercon every night and I still couldn't go for the first half of the trip. Should I just take the max dosage of Fibercon every day until its gone? Its so miserable walking around Disney having to go to the bathroom every 45 minutes without being able to actually go. Why does this happen?
