Considering Renting My Points

I have used my points in the past to take a couple cruises as well as to stay at the Coronodo Del in San Diego, but have read many times that it is almost always a better "deal" to rent your points and pay cash for these vacations.

We are looking at a Las Vegas/Grand Canyon trip over Spring Break and although we found suitable accomodations through RCI, were not able to lock them in for the days we wanted. So..., I'm thinking it might be time to try renting for the first time.

I have read the sticky posts in the Rent/Trade but am looking for more info. Can anyone provide links to the most useful posts regarding renting for the first time?

A couple quick questions to get me started:

- Is there any demand for HH or do most renters want Orlando (knowing of course that I can get ressies in Orlando but limited by the shorter window)?

- Do most renters give up all their UY points or only what they need to finance their current year vacation? I thinking I would like to keep as many points as I can, but also realize that more points offered may make it easier to rent.

- What are the most important questions I should be asking (of the process, I'm guessing the questions to ask the rentees are pretty well documented).

Thanks.

Hi Jeff - I did it a couple of years ago and it's fairly easy. Tried again last year and the deal fell apart, so kept the points and banked instead. Not sure about the demand for HH, but I have been successful enough at getting reservations at the seven month window, so haven't had a problem. Obviously your best position is when you are renting at 11, but that shouldn't stop you from giving the others a try. I only rented about what I needed to finance my alternate trips, and would suggest that strategy unless you're in jeopardy of losing them.

I was a first time renter then, so also had to deal with establishing my credibility, which was easy enough, but still it probably will be an issue with which you'll need to contend. Send me a private message or email if you want to hear more specifics of my experience.
