Considering AP

We have 2 trips scheduled to WDW this year---a quick 3 day in July and a 5 day in December. We'll only do the parks 2 days in July (just base tix, not hopper) and 4 days in Dec. (hoppers). My mom has recently moved to the Orlando area so we'll visiting the area more often than before.

I'm debating purchasing an AP (just one) since the cost of the tix seems to be slightly less *with* the AP than purchasing those tix for 6 days outright--and they'd all be hoppers.

Plus, would I be able to apply the AP discount to my pkgs already booked or change to room only? Since I'd be the only one with the AP everyone else could still do DDP--but could I? I'm looking up info best I can.
Thanks!!

I'm confused by this statement

If you buy only 1 AP - what tickets are cheaper with the AP?

And how would they all be hoppers....

I could be completely wrong but from what I read the AP could be/would be used as park hopper tix.
And it seemed that the cost of buying an AP for myself was less than buying 7 days of tix. No? I admit I'm completely confused by the AP.

Everyone in the room has to be on the same package, so you could add dining to everyone but you would also have to buy a 1 day ticket for everyone including yourself(and then buy you the AP and the others their other tickets).

I guess the way I looked at it is this: since my mother has moved to the orlando area, dd, ds and I would visit a few times a year and do Disney (even if a day trip) a few times a year (dh has heat issues and wouldnt' be able to go in the summers so I know it wouldn't be worth it for him to get an ap). Since we have 2 trips planned this year I figured it might be worth it for me to buy myself an AP so I won't have to continually buy tickets. Ds will be 2 this summer so I still have another year for him and dd is 5 and I can just get her the youth tix. As long as we could still do dining I guess it would be worth it. (But I'm still looking into the ins and outs)

FYI -for your 5 YO DD - they do sell youth AP tix.

Everyone has to buy at least a one-day base ticket to get the dining plan, but you can upgrade those to the tickets you want. Since you are planning on only 6 park days total for the 2 trips, I suggest buying 10-day non-expiring park hoppers, and maybe one annual pass for yourself for additional discounts (resort discounts are not guaranteed). An annual pass costs $462.21/adult and $406.83/child. A 10-day non-expiring park hopper is $443.04/adult gate price and $435.59/adult advance purchase price. For a child those prices are $401.51 gate price/$398.32 advance purchase price. The advantage of the 10-day non-expiring hopper is that you will have 4 leftover days for a future trip. However, if you will return to WDW in 2008 and finish your days in the parks on or before the first day you entered a park in 2007, then the annual pass is the better buy.
