Conservative thread: We're still smiling!

I'll preface the comments with stating I haven't read the book. However, it's so very true. The founding fathers believed in freedom OF religion -- not freedom FROM religion. It's a distinction that I think a lot of people either don't get or conveniently forget.

Btw, first time responder in this thread. Now to see if I can keep up with things. Stuff moves so quickly here it seems!

:welcome:

98% of the people that the DH and I hang out with often are liberal. I figure that is what happens when you live somewhere like Seattle. I've learned just not to talk politics to some of them. It's just an exercise in futility.

You would think NY is liberal, but Western & Upstate is pretty conservative, so that's nice :)

Unrelated: I was just talking to my boyfriend, who owns a shotgun... He heard this at work, what do you all think? I know that just because you call yourself a conservative you don't always side with the NRA, but I thought I'd get some opinions... (In otherwords I know a lot of liberals in support of the NRA too...)

Ammunition Accountability Legislation

Remember how Obama said that he wasn't going to take your guns? Well, it seems that his allies in the anti-gun world have no problem with taking your ammo!

The bill that is being pushed in 18 states (including Illinois and Indiana ) requires all ammunition to be encoded by the manufacture a data base of all ammunition sales. So they will know how much you buy and what calibers.
Nobody can sell any ammunition after June 30, 2009 unless the ammunition is coded.

Any privately held uncoded ammunition must be destroyed by July 1, 2011. (Including hand loaded ammo.) They will also charge a .05 cent tax on every round so every box of ammo you buy will go up at least $2.50 or more!

If they can deprive you of ammo they do not need to take your gun!

This legislation is currently pending in 18 states: Alabama, Arizona, California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Washington.

Send to your friends in these states AND fight to dissolve this BILL!!

Who's in charge of vetting? And the guy in charge of IRS shouldn't have tax issues right?

WASHINGTON (AP) - President-elect Barack Obama's choice to run the Treasury Department and lead the economic rescue effort disclosed to senators Tuesday that he failed to pay $34,000 in taxes from 2001 to 2004, a last-minute complication in an otherwise smooth path to confirmation.

Timothy Geithner paid most of the past-due taxes days before Obama announced his nomination in November, an Obama transition official said. The unpaid taxes were discovered by Obama's transition team while investigating Geithner's background, the official said.

The transition official requested anonymity because the source was not authorized to discuss Geithner's situation.

Obama reiterated his support Tuesday for Geithner as senators who are considering the appointment quizzed Geithner behind closed doors.

Geithner failed to pay self-employment taxes for money he earned while working for the International Monetary Fund from 2001 to 2003, the transition official said. In 2006, the IRS notified him that he owed $14,847 in self-employment taxes and $2,383 in penalties from 2003 and 2004.

Transition officials discovered last fall that Geithner also had not paid the taxes in 2001 or 2002. He paid $25,970 in taxes and interest for those years several days before Obama announced his nomination, the transition official said.

Agreed and welcome to the thread.

I didn't have much on my myspace. There's a link to www.blowoutcongress.com, and something for Sarah Palin.

I do have a "piece of flair" on my facebook that simply says "No thanks, I already have a Messiah" with Obama's logo behind a red circle/slash.:rotfl:
*cracking up over the use of flair* Just watched that movie the other night. Can't get enough of Office Space!
I do have conservative flair, too. People always "gift" them to me. I have had a few send some pretty ugly anti-Obama things but I don't display them on my "flair board." I know it's hard to believe that a conservative can be compassionate ;) but I really don't want to post things which might offend my liberal friends.

Which brings up a question for everyone. Are most of your friends conservative like you? I have no close friends that are. Most of my friends are not very political, but lean left. A few are very left. I don't know how we manage to get along, with me being such a closedminded, far right wing nutjob, neo-con and all.

I live in Unionland so Republicans are few and far between. Besides my parents and siblings (and husband), I have very few conservative friends.

I'm on the north end of Unionland, or the south end, depending on where you put me, but I have to say most of the area where I live is conservative, but with DEM leanings based on fiscal policies. My friends... if I put them all in a room together they'd never believe they were all my friends once they met! :)

I think it's safe to assume that there is a substantial number of women who are not interested in politics. They do not watch The View with an intent to garner "news", but since they don't seek out their news from other sources, then that is their primary venue. As a result, such a show can have a significant influence in shaping their perspectives.

I understand what you're saying and I do agree!

Hello conservatives. Hope all of you are well.

Been busy and my internet time has been sorely restricted.

One observation and something that has been bugging me about the upcoming inauguration.....

Why in the world is President Obama so insistent on using Abraham Lincoln as a prop for his inauguration?

  • He is being sworn in using Lincoln's Bible.
  • His inaugural dinner is inspired by Lincoln.
  • He is being driven to the inauguration in a Lincoln.
  • He recently spent time at the Lincoln Memorial -(purportedly for private reflection, yet somehow all the media was notified- have they all had their "tingly leg" alarm installed already?)
The only thing he is lacking at this point is a funny beard with no moustache and a top hat!

Frankly, I think it is a hubric reach (along the lines of his "over the freakin' top" Berlin speech).

I am thinking he should consider something along the lines of:

  • Swear in using Jimmy Carter's Bible (you know, the one that doesn't say "Israel" anywhere in it.
  • Inaugural dinner inspired by William Taft.
  • Get pulled to the inauguration by Al Gore in a Rickshaw
  • Spend some reflective time at Arlington National Cemetary.
If he starts out his inaugural address with "Fourscore and......"

:)

I've said this since the election... I'm waiting for a Andrew Jackson sized out of control lawn party complete with cheese wheel!

second answer: 'cause there isn't anything left from the clintons to copy.

very true

As you guys all know... you're WAY TOO HARD to keep up with! Doing my cold weather check in (It is currently two degrees) with my still destroyed foot/ankle/toe. Work has been going well, but it really wears me out when its so hard to get from place to place and I did ignore all "restrictions" because I'd really like to:
1. Keep my job
2. Be seen as the team player I am
3.Do my job!

Have a great week!

whew.....glad he got that pesky detail out of the way

On Hope, on change!

Who's in charge of vetting? And the guy in charge of IRS shouldn't have tax issues right?

I saw that today and let out a little snort. The fact that he paid all his taxes before his nomination was announced just makes me chuckle even more.

I want to know how he managed to avoid IRS collections over the years. I know when I had a debt to them due to AMT tax owed on stock options, the irs certainly never let me forget it.

MAN you guys are chatty! I went and got a life for 24 hours and you gave me pages and pages to read.

First of all...FIVE more days until I see my husband. :cool1:

I've been going on a rampage in the house and garage getting ready for him to be home for a week. I've been weeding out out-grown clothes and toys for awhile, which resulted in his entire parking place in the garage being full of stuff to be donated. :rolleyes1 And since the (spoken when we bought our first house) deal is "you can do whatever you want in the house, but the garage is mine," I figured I'd better clear it out. ;)

So yesterday I went through all my bookshelves (this is a big deal...I have a lot of books) and weeded out three boxes worth of fluff that I could let go of. I only added one large box full of other books that my mom brought over on Christmas day. :rolleyes1 I moved one big bookcase, my "china hutch" and my antique sewing machine all to the far wall of the dining room, which opened up the space a lot and looks pretty nice I think. I even dusted every piece of my blue glass collection that is all over those two larger pieces of furniture in the process. Gads that stuff collects dust. Then I went through two big scary nightmares of kitchen cabinets (everyone has one, right?) and created a donation box and a large bag full of "oh for Pete's sake just toss it you haven't seen the lid in five years"." I sent a big box full of pretty little stuff that sits on shelves (and collects dust) home with my mother for her friend's garage sale, a box full of clothes for her friend's grand daughter, and a big bag full of women's sweaters for her to give to a client of hers (haHA, be forewarned if you come near my house while I'm in a purge mood).

Today I went through the boxes in the house and garage, bagged up all the really cool playsets so the pieces wouldn't be scattered hither and yon, and went on my rounds. I donated the three boxes of books to the library for the boosters sale, three large bags of clothes, one large bag of stuffed animals and some really cool toy sets to the Angel's Guild (local thrift shop, sales support local programs) and three more boxes of misc. dishes, purses toys etc. to Goodwill.

WHEW! I feel like I got something accomplished!

I am more liberal than my husband, and almost everyone else I know or am related to is more liberal than me. Some are extremely liberal.

still in the rice drying.... someone emailed me and said we should wait even longer than 48 hours.... LOL so it will be a while before we know!!

my dd19 had her new itouch in her robe pocket and it feel out..into the toilet...
:headache:

Ouch... I hope the rice treatment works. We've never had to "rice down" an iPod, but we had to dry out my oldest daughter's cell phone a few times. Like the time my son reached up and grabbed it out of her hand while she was watching him in the tub, and dunked it under before she could stop him. :rotfl2:

i see your point... and I am sure that is true of some....

but I still am not sure why wardfamily singled out SAHM
.... I am sure there are many working folks who Tivo the show.....
I guess i just didn't get the sahm specifics :confused3

and of course I think that it is a terrible source for "news" ...

Maybe the time slot? :confused3

Hiya neighbor.

Welcome to the board and howdy, neighbor!
I'm in Tacoma and Michelle there is in Gig Hahbah. :) HonuGirl is around sometimes and she's Vancouver.
So now I know there are at least 5 cons in the state. :rotfl:

Hi New People! :wave2:

Hey, no one fret if you don't hear from me for the next week. I'm trying to organize about 1000 photos in Shutterfly.

.... I think this is going to take awhile. :scared:
