Obama skips church, heads to gym

President-elect Barack Obama has yet to attend church services since winning the White House earlier this month, a departure from the example of his two immediate predecessors.

On the three Sundays since his election, Obama has instead used his free time to get in workouts at a Chicago gym.

Asked about the president-elect's decision to not attend church, a transition aide noted that the Obamas valued their faith experience in Chicago but were concerned about the impact their large retinue may have on other parishioners.

"Because they have a great deal of respect for places of worship, they do not want to draw unwelcome or inappropriate attention to a church not used to the attention their attendance would draw," said the aide.

Both President-elect George W. Bush and President-elect Bill Clinton managed to attend church in the weeks after they were elected.

In November of 1992, Clinton went to services in Little Rock, Ark., on the three weekends following his election, taking pre-church jogs on the first two and attending on the third weekend a Catholic Mass with the Rev. Jesse Jackson, with whom he was trying to smooth over lingering campaign tensions.

In the weeks after the contested 2000 election, Bush regularly attended services at Tarrytown United Methodist Church in Austin, Texas, and Al Gore was frequently photographed arriving at and leaving church in Virginia.

On his first day as president-elect, following weeks of Florida recounts and court hearings, Bush went to church with his wife, Laura. They attended an invite-only prayer service on Thursday, Dec. 14, at Tarrytown United Methodist Church. About 300 people attended, including top campaign staff and visiting clergy. During the service, the Rev. Mark Craig, senior pastor at Highland Park United Methodist Church in Dallas, told Bush, "You have been chosen by God to lead the people."

Obama was an infrequent churchgoer on the campaign trail, though he did make a series of appearances in the pews and pulpits of South Carolina churches ahead of that heavily religious state's primary.

The issue of where he worships is, of course, fraught. For about two decades, Obama and his family attended Chicago's Trinity United Church of Christ. But, with the public disclosure earlier this year of incendiary sermons at Trinity by the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Obama and his wife, Michelle, in June resigned their membership in the large South Side congregation.

At the time, the then-Illinois senator said that he didn't want his "church experience to be a political circus" and expressed regret for the unwanted attention members of the congregation had received, noting that some reporters had taken church bulletins only to call sick members and shut-ins.

During the campaign, Obama returned to Chicago to attend the South Side's Apostolic Church of God on Father's Day Sunday to give a speech aimed at the black community on the importance of fatherhood and family.

A number of Washington, D.C., churches of different denominations and traditions are now competing to become the spiritual home of the new first family.

The Obama aide said the family "look forward to finding a church community in Washington, D.C."

Am I the only one sorta dubious with this?

Turning 50 is a whole new ballgame. Hot flashes rule your life now. Cellulite settling in the worst places is the name of the game. Being required to have colonoscopies because you turn 50 is a reality. Having to purcahse those daily pill containers with letters large enought to see is a reality. Yet, for some reason I am starting to finally feel comfortable in my own skin. Whats up with that? :confused3

I right there with ya'...old woman!!:scared1: :rotfl2: You are not alone. Although, my inner child tells me I'm only 30.

Please send all the 18 mos my way- she is wearing that size now! It's her length - not girth. ;) Too bad my Christmas outfits are girly, they were 12 mos.

My sister always told me this in regard to baby clothes-
Be aware that whatever size you're looking for, they won't have it.
I don't have any 18 mo, especially not girls' clothes. I found them at walmart, though, if that helps. They were almost all girly. Won't bother me when we have a girl but for right now, not so much. ;)
Robbie turns 10 mo tomorrow so he's not wearing 18 mo clothes. He's in the 70% for height and 60% for weight but he's in normal infant clothes still.

:teeth: just like at work...if somebody really wants me to make up the rules, i'm more than happy to do so. :teeth:

:rotfl2: I'd rather be a leader than a follower myself, too.

Unrelated, but anyone else getting the dreaded commemorative coins ads at the bottom of this thread? :rotfl:

I think I'm going to say goodnight, all. My eye is still hurting and it's getting harder to read as the time goes on. I'm fine when I'm not on the computer, though. Have a nice Monday. :wizard:

ew, no i'm not...maybe that's what happened to your eye!

I was kidding about sending them my way  .

Dr said she's fine, he thinks she will be tall.
We do have some tall one's on my side of the family, although I'm not. Walmart & Tarjay never have the size I'm looking for. :confused3

You mean you don't want a commemorative coin? :snooty: Can't imagine why? ....................;)

Hope you feel better! :goodvibes

Totally and completely OT........

Has anyone heard the song Hero of the Story? I got a Lady and the Tramp and Friends CD a couple of mos ago and it's one of the tracks on the disc. I've never heard it before and there is no reference regarding where it came from. If you know what song I'm talking about, is it from a movie?

Well, I've been laying low a little today ... Dolce, Michelle, and Blestmom - I think I've caught all those cyber-germs....hope this day of rest has rejuvenated me through this week [when several people are already off so I really can't take off myself].

I'm sorry you've caught a bug...hopefully you'll feel better soon. Can you take some time off and just rest? That seems to work wonders, but I know it's hard.

John, I am rolling my eyes sarcastically with your map. I believe that I will be sorting socks at the very least January 20, 2009. At the very worst, I will be scooping the litter box and cleaning toilets.

I think I'll be doing the same thing...:rotfl2:

No, you will be toasting my 40th birthday.

Yeah! That will give me a reason to celebrate that day. :goodvibes

Does anyone here collect (or do your children collect) the American Girl dolls?

My girls have American Girl dolls. I just ordered my youngest a dress for Kirsten today. I, myself, would really like to have Felicity. I don't know why, I just really liked her. My other daughter has Samantha. The AG stuff is so expensive.

and what a toast that will be!

I will be busily packing for my trip to WDW three days later!!!!

So you leave the 23rd? I'm right behind you on the 25th (Delta moved our flight up a day :thumbsup2 )

if you're not at least 40 yet, then you're still 30. when you turn 40, however, you get to be 29 again. it's called "spreading the youth around".

I like that. I'm staring 35 in the face and I am not happy about it. I don't feel 35. I feel 15 most of the time  I act it, too.

I don't know where all this birthday math leaves me...I really am still in my 20's. :rotfl:

Hmmm, on my next drive down there I just might have to take you up on that offer. It would be good to know more conservative friends here. :thumbsup2 Ugh, I feel like I'm in Obamaland...

Well now, if you do you guys be sure and let me know, because I'll drive in to meet you too. :) I don't mind crossing the bridge. Heck, when I was in high school we had to do it just to get McDonald's french fries. :lmao:

Ugh, I am sooooo sorry. Take care of yourself. I've been sick for a full week now. I don't feel too bad, but my lungs are still congested and I whistle when I breathe sometimes...and I'm hacking like a ten pack a day smoker

However I did find PJ's (or 'feetys' as I call them) that are totally ingenious IMO. They are called Snugglies. The feet have cutouts by the toes and they have a flap that flips over to cover them. When they get too long for them, you just cuff them up. Viola! :wizard:

Now why didn't I think of that? I could be a multi-millionare.

Ooooh, I had a couple pairs of those for my kids. LOVED THEM! They weren't easy to find, but when I saw them I snatched them up. They lasted so much longer that way! And I call them feetys too. :)

For something just funny and cool; my mother has always had a tradition of buying pajamas for all us "kids" (me being the youngest at 41) for Christmas Eve. They are the one present we get to open the night before, and we MUST wear them to bed that night. She adopted my best friend Kat years ago, and always buys them for her---and now her husband--- too. Anyhow, a couple of years ago my mom was looking for cute PJs for Kat, and having a hard time. Kat is a queen sized woman. She was looking and looking...and she found feeties! In 3X! She HAD to buy them, and she wondered if Kat was going to hate them. She loves them, and wears them all the time in the winter. :) I was jealous. I wanted feeties too!

You know what's weird? The only birthday I ever had difficulty with was my 29th. I obsessed over the fact I was going to be THIRTY!! Oh, the horror! Well, when I turned 30....it didn't phase me. I haven't worried about another birthday since. The alternative isn't at all appealing! I'd much rather be old than dead!;)

I think we should plan a Conservative Washington Dismeet for January. Just after the first of the year. :thumbsup2 I don't mind coming down to Seattle. Especially if it's a Thursday or a Friday. I can stay at a friends house in Bellevue. I'm sure we can find something to do.

I love my feetie pajamas. :cool1: I got one pair from Nordstroms a few years ago and one from Target. Woohoo! I know there's a website where you can order them from. I'll have to go look for it.

Coming as far north as Seattle is troublesome for me during the week, because I'd be risking a potential disaster trying to get back to meet my kids' school bus. Getting out of Seattle and past Boeing is always a gamble, and then there's the Narrows. Traffic is much better now that we have the second bridge, but there is no way around a problem if there's a wreck on the span. Well, there is a way around...but it involves driving all the way down to Olympia and back up the other side of the Sound. :sad2: On the other hand, if you're willing to stay in Bellevue and drive down as far as Tacoma, I'll gamble on just the bridge any time. :)

 Me too! It could be a stye.

That website was interesting. I am very surprised at Disney's grade myself.

I was looking for any excuse on why we couldn't shop at American Eagle anymore for DS, but they got an A+! I guess I should be thankful he's not into Hot Topic, eh?

Good morning everyone!

DH is back, he saw a fawn. LOL I keep telling him the road going out of town would be a prime deer hunting spot, but NOOOO must travel 6 hours to the UP and spend nine days up there so he can watch one fawn walk by. LOL
