And we find the US patriotism quite 'scary' in some ways.
Ah, and that's just it. Our "scary" patriotism arises out of American Exceptionalism. What sometimes makes it scary is the confusion of Americans concerning its true nature. Due to both ignorance and the violent attempt of self-loathing Americans to spread their anti-American sentiments (through our schools, politics, and culture), the self-consciousness of what made America exceptional has been numbed to the point of, "We're great because WE are American." Some poor cowboys are just trying to hold on to something; they're just not sure what.
Here is my attempt to explain it.
In actuality, it is not us at all. Our unwritten constitution as a people (a derivative of, among other things, that glorious Magna Charta), recognizing the dignity of every individual human person, has "fitted us for greatness." We were by no means the first people to recognize this, but, by virtue of not bearing the baggage of Old World history as a nation, we had the opportunity of organizing our written Constitution of government in a fresh, if not experimental, manner to reflect universal, natural-law principles.
While there was an awareness of our Founders about what they were doing, they considered it a natural evolution of their European traditions. It was other Europeans, as exemplified by Toqueville (G.K. Chesterton, my favorite Brit, is good on this, too), that recognized the exceptionalism unique to America, especially American civil and religious institutions.
Are we faultless? H*LL NO! But, in our short history we have been symbolized as an unwavering bulwark of human liberty. I prefer the image of the rattlesnake that bites relentlessly when threatened, which is exactly what makes us sometimes scary. Especially lately, when Americans have felt threatened not only by foreign enemies, but also by some within our own political system.
It should not be "America alone," nor do I think it is. But, the hope from American Exceptionalism is that it will be, should it (God forbid) come down to it. This is not pride, rather it is the determination of Liberty or Death!
