All resorts have some connecting rooms. However, they are not a bookable catagory. You can request them, and Disney will try to give them to you, however there is no guarantee.
AKL would be very different from a Value resort. For us, upgrading from a Value always depends on how much time we plan on spending hanging out at the resort. If we know we are going to spend a lot of time at the pool, then we upgrade, as the pools are much nicer at the Moderate and Deluxe resorts.
If you don't plan on hanging out at the resort then upgrading from a Value may be a waste of money. What good does a nicer pool and nicer surroundings do if you are not there to take advantage of them?
