Hi all

We fly from UK to New York then from there to Orlando, what happens to our luggage? Do we have to collect and check in again?

Also we are flying with United - when we have tried to reserve our seats online there are no economy seats available from New York to Orlando, so what will happen, will we have to get on a later flight?

Many thanks and a great forum :-)

I would recommend calling United directly about the seat assignments and the luggage.

My guess is that the airport at which you clear customs is where you will have to get the luggage.

i called united about it and the last i spoke to all she wanted to do was to get me to buy premium upgraded tickets or first class!!

Then call again and insist on an answer or ask to be transferred to someone that can answer the question.

If there are no economy seats currently available for assignment, keep checking and see if one opens or wait until you check-in. If there are none available at check-in, they will typically upgrade you to a premium seat for no charge.

I haven't flown through JFK, but typically the procedure is you pickup your luggage after the immigration check, then carry it through the customs check and put it on a belt for it to be sent to your connecting flight.

I assume you are probably flying through EWR, since there are no United flights from JFK-MCO. You will have to pick up your bags at customs and recheck them (as you would at any US airport when connecting from an international to a domestic flight). It's very easy at EWR though. You pick up your bags, go through customs and then hand them off right on the other side of customs. You will have to reclear security before proceeding to your gate.

There are definitely seats available and you will get a seat assignment, most likely when you check-in for your first flight. You won't have any more luck getting a seat assignment by calling.

United has a section of coach called Economy Plus with more legroom. They hold back assigning those seats (and often a few regular coach seats like exit rows) so elite passengers (who often book last minute) can get seat assignments when they book. They also are willing to let non-elites take the seat assignments for a fee (kind of like the more legroom seats on JetBlue) If you want a seat assignment now you will have to pay (but you will at least get a little extra legroom).

No, not on UA. They usually will not give you an assignment in economy plus if you aren't an elite frequent flyer or pay for the seat. You will get a seat assignment in regular economy, just be prepared to be split up.

As stated above, you will pick up your luggage after going through passport control at JFK and will recheck it for your flight to MCO.

OP stated she was flying UA from JFK-MCO. She is flying another airline from the UK to JFK.

There are flights on UA from JFK-MCO, just no non-stop flights.

OP stated New York to MCO, which most likely means Newark given that they are flying United. United only flies to LAX/SFO/DC from JFK.

Hi all

I forgot to mention its UK to Newark Int.

Thanks for updates, tried united on the phone they have said only option i have got is to upgrade or see what they can do at check-in.
