Congresswoman's son sentenced for slashing GOP tires

MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin (AP) -- A congresswoman's son and three Democratic campaign workers were sentenced Wednesday to four to six months in jail for slashing tires outside a Bush-Cheney campaign office on Election Day 2004.
The men pleaded no contest in January to misdemeanor property damage. A fifth worker was found not guilty.

"This case had to be a public example of what can happen when you interfere with voters' rights," said Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Michael Brennan, who rejected prosecutors' recommendation of probation for the four men.

The state Republican Party had rented more than 100 vehicles to give rides to voters and poll monitors on November 2, 2004. The cars were parked outside a GOP campaign office when the tires were punctured. The vandalism left the drivers scrambling for new vehicles.

Among those sentenced Wednesday were Sowande A. Omokunde, the son of Rep. Gwen Moore, D-Wisconsin, and Michael Pratt, the son of former acting Milwaukee Mayor Marvin Pratt.

"I love my son very much. I'm very proud of him," Moore said. "He's accepted responsibility."

Omokunde was sentenced to four months in jail; Pratt and Lewis Caldwell of Milwaukee were sentenced to six months; and Lavelle Mohammad of Milwaukee was sentenced to five months. All were granted work-release privileges.

Brennan also ordered them to pay a $1,000 fine each, in addition to the $5,317 in total restitution ordered earlier.

The four could have faced up to nine months in jail term and fines of $10,000.
Wisconsin's 10 electoral votes in the 2004 election ended up going to Democrat John Kerry.

*********************************************************
President Bush probably would have won the state and its 10 electoral votes..but oh no the Kerry Democrat hoodlums put an end to it. I am so glad Republicans have only been accused of hanging chads and not slashing tires ..shame shame!!

Results…

Kerry 1,489,504 50%
Bush 1,478,120 49%

I haven't seen this story anywhere but here, interesting. I guess since it isn't a republican's kid it isn't newsworthy. Who says there is no liberal bias in the news media ? ??

I have stopped being amazed by such unbalanced reporting.

The linked source is the much hated CNN. :confused3

It's a local story unworthy of any national coverage.

(I'm pleased that they were found, tried, prosecuted, and punished.) :thumbsup2

Okay, I have a question for all those who complain about the liberal media and constantly say they don't report these type stories or stories favorable to the administration. Since you hate them so much I'm assuming you obviously don't watch, read, or listen to anything associated with the MSM. So how in hades do you know (with authority, no less) what they report or don't report? I can't figure that one out :confused3. Btw, glad the kid got his. No one should get away with a crime.

What is MSM? I saw that on this board too? I swear you learn something new on The DIS every day.

Rush has time to do his own show and watch CNN, CBS, and ABC, read the New York Times, and listen to Air America too? Wow. If I did all that I would need some medication too! ;)

Bad assumption, but not surprising that you would make it.

I don't think the hard left can accept that the conservative has made their decisions based on their own experience. It has to be ditto head, force fed, propaganda for us to have adopted our position, right? If we have a position different from the hard left, we're obviously incapable of independant thought.

Take the MSM at face value as gospel and without question? Nah.

Or, stay informed, take both sides in and make an educated decision on what you've seen and heard.

Yeah, let's do that.

Oh you little charmer you! I see you've lost none of your debating skills on your way too short hiatus from us. Come back when you can start a post without an unprovoked insult and someone might actually take you seriously.

Well I agree with you about their punishment, but I do believe it is more than a local story not because it involved the son of an elected official, but because working to deprive people of voting privileges (especially in a national election) is a big deal.

In the '90s the son of a Cabinet member was arrested in Arkansas on drug charges - distribution not possession. I believe it was cocaine (or crack?).

The trial got a LOT of national coverage. It was even in Time magazine. Even though the Arkansas judge was a big time Democrat (originally appointed by Bill Clinton) he convicted the man and gave him the maximum punishment - despite MAJOR political pressure not to.

I was quite proud of that judge's integrity - especially since he's my cousin. But that truly was a local story and didn't deserve the national attention that it generated.

Not an insult, just an observation. Sorry if you were offended.

Your posts are chock full of insults to those that don't agree with you, but I've yet to be offended.

Do you think you're taken seriously? Interesting....

My dh is a big time republican. He watches all the news channels, reads all the blogs, listens to all the radio shows. Left and right, he loves listening to it ALL. He may not agree with the left (and sometimes the right) BUT he does make the time and effort to listen to both sides of the story. Most of the conservatives I know do this. None of the liberals I know do, which includes 99% of my family.

It is sooo embaressing to witness a discussion between my dh and my sister. She makes a statement including info that some twit has sent her in an email. Dh refutes said statement and they go on line to look it up. 100% of the time my sister is wrong. When proven wrong from a source even she will except, she says it does matter what the facts are, what matters is how she feels.:lmao: I can't believe we're related.

I guess I just have a hard time imagining some folks that go out of their way to blast the media relentlessly actually taking a good part of their free time to watch CNN when they could be enjoying themselves watching Fox. It doesn't matter what the story is, big or small, I always seem to hear "well you'll never see that on CBS or ABC etc. I'm just saying you can't know that unless you watch or listen 24 hours a day. I've seen stories on Fox that I was surprised they would air. Give CNN a break. They do it too!
