I'm sorry if this has been clarified, and I have missed it. I'm flying SW on Tuesday am, and they directed me to the TSA website.

I have looked at the TSA site, and see that liquids are banned. Liquids, lotions, gel. Check.

Then I see on this board that stick chapstick should be checked. :confused3 Where is that information? What about deodorant?

Liquid meds. Check. Pills-can be in a daily pill box all mixed together?

Water/drinks must be consumed. What about a sandwich? Candy?

Thanks for directing me to a clear list of what's what.

There is no clear list. This is from the TSA's FAQ

Question
What about liquid eyeliner and similar items?

Answer
If you are in doubt about an item, please leave it at home or place in your checked baggage or the item may be intercepted at the security checkpoint.

In other words your TSA agent gets to make the call. Just assume it won't go in your favor.

Solid food is fine. Candy is fine. Pillls are fine. (However, under the law drugs are suppose to be labled, just ask Rush Limbaugh)

The TSA website is pretty clear:

http://www.tsa.gov/press/happenings/threat-change.shtm

NO LIQUIDS OR GELS OF ANY KIND WILL BE PERMITTED IN CARRY-ON BAGGAGE. ITEMS MUST BE IN CHECKED BAGGAGE. This includes all beverages, shampoo, suntan lotion, creams, tooth paste, hair gel, and other items of similar consistency.

Deodorant is banned. I would assume chapstick is as well, as cosmetics are and it is similar in consistency to banned items.

Food is okay (such as sandwiches and candy). Condiments, such as catsup and mayonnaise in separate packages are not.

It would be impossible for the TSA to compile a specific list of all liquid and gel items which one might try and carry onto a plane. If in doubt, pack in checked luggage or buy at your destination.

I"m wondering if the gel deoderants are the ones being banned from carry-ons. They look like a stick but aren't. Chap sticks are definitely not a liquid. To be on the safe side, pack one in your checked bags and carry one on with you. The worst that could happen is you'd have to throw away a cheap chapstick.

Its pretty clear (pertains to carry-on items)

NO LIQUIDS/NO GELS in carry-on items (Chap stick is a gel - sort of)

Flying is a priviledge and can be revoked. People on this board are going on and on about how they wont fly - and that is their right- because its not safe but others are complaining about taking off shoes and no pepsi on the plane and chap stick. Do you want to get there safely or quickly? Its got to be one or the other. Security measures of El-Al are not that far away.

OP here. I'm not trying to be smart-or is that dumb? ;) I'm not complaining about the speed at which we get there. I'm not complaining at all. Not sure where the lecture came from. :confused3

I guess that my inference skills are not all there, because it is NOT clear to me. I use a solid deodorant stick. Chapstick is a solid, too. ie it is not a gel or a liquid nor do either have a similar consistency of, say, hair gel or toothpaste. I got confused with all of the talk here about these two items in particular being banned. If there was a link that had those items on it, it would be clear. As it is, it seems to be muddied.

Luckily, my theory is to deal with things as they come. With 5 kids 12-21 ( FIVE "teenagers" :faint: ) I've dealt with a lot of stuff in my time (and have lots to go, too), so this is a minor blip on the horizon. I just wanted to know where the "facts" were coming from.

And, actually, I'm glad for the posts about the chapstick since I carry "Carmex" in my purse, and that IS a gel. It will be checked with all of the other toiletries.

The newspaper that I read today said that lipstick and chapstick are both ok to carry on. My chapstick will be in my pocket when I fly, like it always is.

I called American on this because my wife is obsessed with her chapstick. They said that the chapstick should be alright. (Thank god! My wife wouldn't be to happy!)

Chapstick should be OK as far as I'm concerned, but on Thursday, when DH flew, security was confiscating chapstick and lipstick.

I'm also curious about some of the distinctions between gel and solid, such as solid deodorant and shaving cream, which both seem to be current prohibited from carryons. We're not flying for 6 weeks so I'm hoping things will be calmer and clearer then.

I not trying to creat a debate but I have to ask this - how would a screener know if you had a chapstick in your pocket? They're in plastic tubes and wouldn't be picked up on a metal detector.

Here's a list:

http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/prohibited/new-items.shtm

>>>Prohibited: Lip glosses/liquids (solid lip glosses and blushes are allowed)<<<

I would think chapstick is a solid lip gloss, along with regular lipstick.

I flew home from CA yesterday, I accidentally had a chapstick in my purse (I thought I cleaned everything out and put it in my checked bag). They only x-rayed my purse like normal, I doubt it even showed up.

As of this morning, SWA had our grandaughter (age 7) put her Bubble Gum-flavored chapstick into her checked luggage (we asked at the ticket counter, so that it wouldn't get thrown away). This was out of RDU; maybe other airports vary. :confused3
For our trip to WDW in October, we've decided to send a small package (with every thing that could conceivably be banned) to the resort beforehand, in order to eliminate that stress. :thumbsup2
Now, if only we could figure out how to send the few bottles of wine we usually carry on............................. :rolleyes1 :rolleyes1 :rolleyes1

Debbie, thanks for that link. Here's a <snip>
UPDATED LIST DUE TO THREAT CHANGE. . . . .
. . . Lip gels (Carmex in tubes, etc)
Lip glosses/liquids (solid lip glosses and blushes are allowed)
Liquid foundations

So, the carmex is a no-no, but it looks like a chapstick would be okay.

I'm very confused by this as well and have posted elsewhere on how confusing it all is. I wouldn't have thought about chapstick being banned until I started reading it on the disboards. yet, looking at the TSA site, I find it confusing...I realize not every single item can be listed but a chapstick is not a gel or liquid. yet, here people are saying it is banned. Again, not trying to debate but very confused. I don't want to cause any trouble but don't want to throw out something, or not have something I want...if I can have it in the carry on. On the flip side, I think that as the days pass, things will be fine tuned and there may be more precise information. We go in 2 wks and I may just call the airline....
