That is the revenue maximizing algorithm doing it's job. They don't like having orphaned rooms for a night or 2 that would be hard to fill. You can try calling as Guest Services has the ability to override the system. It's at their discretion whether or not to do it.

Disney wants to optimally fill all rooms all nights. There will be times that the system will not allow you to book even if you find rooms are open. My last trip I could get my room for all my nights with an AP discount ............ that came out much more per night than those same nights individually. So I booked each night and luckily when I got here they let me stay in my room each night. It is something that has gotten worse the last couple years ... they would just rather not book it (which leaves two nights open, one being peak rate) in hopes someone comes along and books the whole thing ... or wants Thurs-Monday (higher rates) then someone eventually takes Mon-Thurs.

In the good old days, if rooms were available you could book them.

Now computers are controlling reservations to maximize capacity and the spending habits associated with of the length of stay to maximize revenue.

For example, giving out two 3-day reservations could be more profitable than one 6 day reservation, so those are prioritized.

Disney has a ton of data on reservations and spending habits and no doubt they've got supercomputers that are looking at it from every angle to make another dollar.

With magic bands, they have even more data. Just think of what they could do. Big spenders mysteriously find lots of fastpass+ availability, while frugal types are left waiting in line as "punishment."

Perhaps a bit too cynical, but that's what they can do these days with computers and big data.

They do track everything. As I said in another post I had an issue that required help from their actual IT staff. The woman fixed my problem and we talked and she cheerfully asked me if I wanted to know how much I spend every trip. She seemed to even have access to what I had spent on my credit cards in the parks. I am an IT pro myself and it is a little scary what data they can mine and the magic bands gives them even more.

My TA was able to have Disney override the system. I only needed 2 nights.

Ugh the algorithm. We went a couple weeks ago. 4 nights, I couldn't find any four night stay at any value for the first two weeks in January. I was having a fit. I finally ended up booking four separate one night reservations, then I called Disney and had them merge them all into one reservation. It was a pain in the you know what, but I was happy that I was able to get it to work. Try separate reservations, try different numbers of nights, and then just call to see what they can work around.
